The average CEO compensation in India stood at Rs 13.8 crore, up 40 per cent compared with pre-COVID-19 times, and more than half of the overall remuneration is linked to short-term and long-term incentives, says a Deloitte report.
According to the Deloitte India Executive Performance and Rewards Survey 2024, average CEO compensation stands at Rs 13.8 crore, while CEOs who were also promoters or members of the promoter family are paid Rs 16.7 crore on average.
"Promoter CEO compensation outpacing professional CEO compensation is primarily driven by two factors. Professional CEOs change more often than promoter CEOs due to the longer tenure of promoter CEOs at an aggregate.
"But it is also important to note that the range of promoter CEO compensation is very wide, and that affects the higher averages," said Anandorup Ghose, Partner, CHRO Programme Leader, Deloitte India.
According to Deloitte, while CEO compensation has increased, more than 50 per cent of target compensation is 'pay-at-risk'. For professional CEOs, pay-at-risk at 57 per cent is much higher than for promoter CEOs at 47 per cent.
Professional CEOs have 25 per cent of their target compensation delivered through long-term incentives, which for most companies, is paid through share-linked incentives.
According to Deloitte, CEO compensation in India has seen high-single-digit annualised growth rates.
"The wide gap between median and average CEO compensation (Rs 9.3 crore versus Rs 13.8 crore) indicates the wide range of compensation numbers and some outliers on the higher end," it added.
While assessing CEO and CXO performance, most companies use a holistic scorecard that includes a mix of financial and non-financial metrics and targets. However, incentives for CEOs and CXOs are still tilted towards financial company-level goals within those scorecards.
On long-term incentives, Deloitte said the percentage of companies using share-based incentives continued to increase (75 per cent in 2024 vs 63 per cent in 2020) and the the prevalence of stock options, or ESOPs, continued to decrease (49 per cent of companies in 2024 vs 68 per cent of companies in 2020).
"Large Indian companies with more mature and globally aligned compensation practices are pivoting towards Performance Shares and use of multiple incentive plans for different employee cohorts. Conversations in the boardroom have also shifted from the need for share-based payment to the return from these incentive structures to stakeholders," Anandorup Ghose added.

The complainant alleged that she was working as an assistant general manager at the company where the accused was the CEO, the police said.
She said the man was known to her uncle and had helped her in getting a job, the complaint added.
A senior police officer said further probe is underway in the matter.&nbsp;

Last week, Tech Mahindra sought government's permission for the appointment of Mohit Joshi, a non-resident Indian to be appointed as the MD and CEO of the company from December 20. The companies have to seek clearance from the government as part of a routine regulatory process if the candidate is not an Indian citizen.&nbsp;
As per Financial Express, in the largecap category, CEOs of four of the top seven Indian IT companies &mdash; HCLTech, Cognizant, Wipro and Tech Mahindra &mdash; are based outside India. This while a large majority of Cognizant&rsquo;s workforce is based in India.&nbsp;
Wipro Chairman Rishad Premji also came in support of the company's CEO Thierry Delaporte when questions about his possible relocation came up. Premji said that the current location of Delaporte which is Paris is strategically located in Europe and has easy access to both east (Asia) and west (America).

Joshi will replace Gurnani who has been one of the longest-serving chief executive officers of the Indian IT sector.

IT company Tech Mahindra on Saturday announced the appointment of former Infosys president Mohit Joshi as MD and CEO designate, who will take over the charge from C P Gurnani after his retirement on December 19 this year.
The announcement follows the resignation of Joshi from Infosys where he was head of the global financial services and healthcare and the software businesses, which included Finacle (Infosys' banking platform) and the artificial intelligence and automation portfolio.
"Mohit will take over as MD and CEO when C P Gurnani retires on 19th December 2023. He will join Tech Mahindra well before that date to allow for sufficient transition time," Tech Mahindra said in a statement.
Separately, Infosys in a regulatory filing said that Joshi has resigned from the company. He will be on leave effective from March 11, 2023 and his last date with the company would be June 9, 2023.
Joshi will replace Gurnani who has been one of the longest serving chief executive officers of the Indian IT sector.

Apple Inc. said in a regulatory filing on January 12 that Cook's target total compensation is $49 million for 2023, with a $3 million base salary, and $6 million cash incentive &mdash; both unchanged from the previous year &mdash; and $40 million in equity awards.
Apple said its compensation committee took into account shareholder feedback, the company's performance and a recommendation from Cook, who was promoted to CEO in 2011, to adjust his compensation in light of the feedback received.&nbsp;
Apple said Cook supported the changes to his compensation. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; In 2021, Cook received a compensation package valued at $98.7 million. Just $3 million of that was salary. As the tech industry suffers through a slowdown in recent months, Facebook&rsquo;s parent company Meta announced hiring freeze and &ldquo;further restructure&rdquo;.&nbsp;
Acoording to reports, Zuckerberg made these comments during an internal call to employees.
Zuckerberg also said that Meta would reduce budgets across most teams, and that individual teams will have to resolve how to handle headcount changes, the report added.
Zuckerberg reportedly added that budgets will be slashed across most teams at Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.
The announcement comes after several tech companies have been forced to slash headcount in recent months, as advertisers trim spending in anticipation of a recession.

In her new role, Bulchandani will now be responsible for all aspects of Ogilvy’s business across 131 offices in 93 countries which look at advertising, public relations, consulting, and health units.
Bulchandani was born and brought up in Amritsar and is one of four siblings. She studied at Welham Girls’ School in Dehradun, followed by St Xavier’s in Mumbai.  She also did a Master’s in Communications from the University of Southern California in 1991. She moved to the US after getting married and has worked there since.

Indian American Raj Subramaniam would be the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of FedEx, according to an announcement made Monday by the U.S. multinational courier delivery giant. Raj Subramanian would replace Frederick W Smith, chairman and CEO, who will step down from this position on June 1. He will now be its executive chairman.
“As we look toward what’s next, I have a great sense of satisfaction that a leader of the caliber of Raj Subramaniam will take FedEx into a very successful future,” Smith said in a statement.

93% of the respondents feel that a more stringent implementation of safety norms would be a better alternative to the imposition of a partial lockdown. Almost all of these respondents have indicated that their firm is equipped and well prepared for implementation of stricter health and safety protocols.
A major share of the respondents (67%) have indicated that they are working with the government for mass vaccination of eligible workforce.&nbsp;More than half are stocking raw material and nearly a third of the firms are accommodating labor force within the factory to avoid night curfew.

Republic TV CEO Vikas Khanchandani reached the Mumbai Police headquarters on Sunday after being summoned for questioning in TRP manipulation case.
