The virus was dubbed sloth fever because scientists first investigating the virus found it in a three-toed sloth, later thought to be a vector of the disease. But the recent outbreak has largely been attributed to small flies called midges and some types of mosquitoes.
Person-to-person transmission is yet to be recorded. Those infected have said it is similar to dengue, Zika or malaria. Fever, headaches and muscle aches are common, and some infected people also suffer diarrhea, nausea, vomiting or rash.

A joint probe by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of the US and the Gambian health authorities has suggested a strong link between the death of many children in Gambia and the consumption of made-in-India cough syrups that were allegedly contaminated. In October, the World Health Organization (WHO) had issued an alert stating that the four cough syrups being supplied to Gambia by the India-based Maiden Pharmaceuticals Ltd were of substandard quality and claimed that they were linked to the death of many children in Gambia.
A CDC report released on Friday stated, "This investigation strongly suggests that medications contaminated with Diethylene Glycol [DEG] or Ethylene Glycol [EG] imported into the Gambia led to this Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) cluster among children." "Patients with DEG poisoning can experience a range of signs and symptoms, including altered mental status, headache, and gastrointestinal symptoms; however, the most consistent manifestation is AKI, characterized by oliguria (low urine output) or anuria, progressing over 1-3 days to renal failure (indicated by elevated serum creatinine and blood urea nitrogen),&rdquo; read the report.
According to the CDC, they were contacted by Gambia's Ministry of Health (MoH) to assist in characterizing the illness (multiple cases of Acute Kidney Injury and deaths in children), describing the epidemiology, and identifying potential causal factors and their sources in August last year.
The report also said that in past DEG outbreaks, manufacturers have been suspected of substituting DEG in the place of more expensive, pharmaceutical-grade solvents.

Chennai-based Global Pharma Healthcare has suspended production of its eyedrops after US health regulator linked them to vision loss in the country.&nbsp;
US officials are investigating possible contamination in Ezricare Artificial Tears eyedrops which they say may have caused infections in the eye, blood, lungs and urine. Eye drops are used to treat irritation and dryness.
According to disease investigators, the infections were all caused by a bacteria called Pseudomonas aeruginosa. US officials have said the bacteria strain causing the infections is 'extensively resistant' to standard anti-biotics.&nbsp;
Investigators found the bacteria were not susceptible to any antibiotics routinely tested at public health laboratories. However, a newer antibiotic named cefiderocol did seem to work.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in a statement said that the bacteria was found in open bottles of Ezricare Artificial Tears and it is now probing the presence of bacteria in unopened bottles.&nbsp;

The eye connects to the nasal cavity through tear ducts and bacteria can move from the nasal cavity into the lungs. Also, bacteria in these parts of the body can seed infections at other sites such as in the blood or wounds, CDC officials said.

America's Centre for Disease Control has said there&rsquo;s a &ldquo;likely association&rdquo; between rare heart inflammation mostly in people 30 and under who received Pfizer&rsquo;s or Moderna&rsquo;s Covid-19 vaccine.&nbsp;There have been more than 1,200 cases of a myocarditis or pericarditis&nbsp;as per data collected by CDC&nbsp;which translated to a link of&nbsp;12.6 heart inflammation cases per million doses of Pfizer/Moderna&nbsp;vaccines.&nbsp; Myocarditis is the inflammation of the heart muscle, while pericarditis is the inflammation of the membrane surrounding the heart. "CDC&nbsp;officials are gathering more data to fully understand the potential risks, how to manage it and whether there are any long-term issues," said&nbsp;Dr. Grace Lee, who chairs the CDC's safety group.
She also highlighted that, "Clinical presentation of myocarditis cases following vaccination has been distinct, occurring most often within one week after dose two, with chest pain as the most common presentation.&rdquo;&nbsp; The agency said there have been 267 cases of myocarditis or pericarditis reported after receiving one dose of the Pfizer&rsquo;s or Moderna&rsquo;s Covid-19 vaccines and 827 reported cases after two doses through June 11. There are 132 additional cases where the number of doses received is unknown, the CDC said.

The finding was made during an investigation to trace the source of recent infections reported in the city. It has proved that contact with packaging contaminated by living novel coronavirus could lead to infection, state-run Xinhua news agency reported, quoting the CDC statement.
The statement, however, did not mention the country from where the package was imported. It is the first time in the world that living novel coronavirus has been isolated from the outer packaging of cold-chain food, the statement said.
The agency said the risk of cold-chain food circulating in China's market being contaminated by the novel coronavirus is very low, citing recent nucleic acid test results for samples taken from the business.
A total of 2.98 million samples had been tested across the country's 24 provincial-level regions by September 15, including 670,000 taken from cold-chain food or food packaging, 1.24 million from working staff and 1.07 million from the environment.
Only 22 samples from cold-chain food or food packaging tested positive for the virus, the CDC said.
Meanwhile, the National Health Commission on Sunday said 13 confirmed Covid-19 cases, all arriving from outside the mainland, were reported on Saturday.
