A British Royal Navy F-35B fighter jet that was grounded in India since June 14 due to a technical snag successfully took off for Darwin, Australia on Tuesday after completing maintenance.

The British F-35B fighter jet flew back on Tuesday after completing maintenance, more than a month after it made an emergency landing at the international airport here, and remained parked there since then.
The jet, which took off at 10.50 am, flew to Darwin in Australia, airport sources said.
"A UK F-35B aircraft, which landed following an emergency diversion on June 14, departed today from Thiruvananthapuram International Airport. A UK engineering team, deployed since July 06 completed the repairs and safety checks, allowing the aircraft to resume active service," a British High Commission spokesperson said.
In a statement, the spokesperson said the UK remains very grateful for the support and collaboration of the Indian authorities and airport teams throughout the repair and recovery process.
"We look forward to continuing to strengthen our defence partnership with India," the statement said.
The jet was brought out of the hangar and kept at the airport bay on Monday.
The British Royal Navy F-35B Lightning fighter jet is part of the UK's most advanced stealth fleet.
Known to be one of the most advanced fighter aircraft in the world and worth over USD 110 million, the jet remained grounded at the international airport here since June 14 after it developed a technical snag.
The aircraft, which took off from HMS Prince of Wales on 14 June, was unable to return to the carrier due to adverse weather conditions.
Prioritising safety, it diverted to Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, where it landed safely.
Subsequently, the aircraft developed an engineering issue whilst on the ground, which temporarily delayed its return to the Carrier Strike Group.
Engineers from HMS Prince of Wales assessed the aircraft and determined that the support of a UK-based engineering team was required.
The UK accepted India's offer to move the aircraft to the Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility.
To ensure minimal disruption to regular airport operations, it was decided that the aircraft would be moved once the UK engineering teams arrived with specialist equipment.

A British Kashmiri Professor of Politics and International Relations at London&rsquo;s University of Westminster has claimed her Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) has been cancelled by the Indian authorities over alleged &ldquo;anti-India activities&rdquo;.
Nitasha Kaul took to social media on Sunday to post details of the communication received from the government of India, which accuses her of being motivated by &ldquo;malice and complete disregard for facts or history&rdquo;.
It follows her previous posts from February when the academic had hit back on being denied entry to India to reportedly attend a conference in Bengaluru.
&ldquo;Know that arresting academics in India for speaking against hate is closely tied to removing access to country and family for academics outside India,&rdquo; Kaul said in her post on X.
&ldquo;Idea is to send a signal &mdash; don&rsquo;t dare challenge us within and don&rsquo;t dare analyse what&rsquo;s going on to convey to audiences outside,&rdquo; she said.
Under the OCI rules stipulated by the High Commission of India in London, the government of India can cancel an OCI registration of any individual on certain specific grounds including &ldquo;if it is satisfied... the overseas citizen of India has shown disaffection towards the Constitution of India as established by law&rdquo;.
An excerpt of the cancellation document purportedly received from the government of India, Kaul has been accused of &ldquo;numerous inimical writings, speeches and journalistic activities at various international forums and on social media platforms&rdquo; that target &ldquo;India and its institutions on the matters of India&rsquo;s sovereignty&rdquo;.
Kaul, Director of the Centre for the Study of Democracy at the University of Westminster, has condemned the revocation of her OCI as a &ldquo;bad faith, vindictive, cruel example of transnational repression&rdquo; and claimed that she has been punished for &ldquo;scholarly work on anti-minority and anti-democratic policies&rdquo;.
The High Commission of India in London has been approached for a statement.

The three new criminal laws that were passed in the parliament to replace the colonial-era legislations will come into force on July 1, 2024.
The Ministry of Home Affairs on Saturday notified the date of the implementation of these three laws.
The Bharatiya Nyaya (Second) Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha (Second) Sanhita, and the Bharatiya Sakshya (Second) Bill will replace the Indian Penal Code of 1860, Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) of 1973, and Indian Evidence Act, of 1872.
These laws were passed by the Parliament on December 21, 2023. They received the assent of President Droupadi Murmu on December 25, 2023.
The three legislations aim at completely overhauling the criminal justice system in the country by giving definitions of various offences and their punishments.
The government, however, has decided not to implement the provision related to cases of hit and run by a vehicle driver as promised to truckers who had protested against it.
"In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (2) of section 1 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (45 of 2023), the central government hereby appoints the 1st day of July, 2024 as the date on which the provisions of the said Sanhita, except the provision of sub-section (2) of section 106, shall come into force," one of the notifications said.
After the laws were enacted the truckers had protested the provision of Section 106 (2) which provides for 10 years imprisonment and fine to those who causes death of any person by rash and negligent driving of vehicle not amounting to culpable homicide, and escapes without reporting it to a police officer. Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla had said the decision to invoke Section 106 (2) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita will be taken only after consultation with the All India Motor Transport Congress.
According to the Section 106 (2) of the BNS, "Whoever causes death of any person by rash and negligent driving of vehicle not amounting to culpable homicide, and escapes without reporting it to a police officer or a magistrate soon after the incident, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description of a term which may extend to ten years, and shall also be liable to fine." While replying to a debate on the three bills in Parliament, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had said the focus was on delivering justice rather than handing down the punishment.
For the first time, the word terrorism has been defined in the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. It was absent in the IPC.
The laws have given a clear definition of terrorism, abolished sedition as a crime and introduced a new section titled "offences against the state".
The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita lists offences such as acts of secession, armed rebellion, subversive activities, separatist activities or endangering the sovereignty or unity in the new avatar of the sedition law.

Jaswant Singh Chail, 21, who claimed he wanted to &ldquo;assassinate&rdquo; the late monarch as revenge for the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar, according to a social media video that emerged soon after his arrest, has written a letter to express his &ldquo;distress and sadness&rdquo;. Justice Nicholas Hilliard has been hearing evidence in the case at the Old Bailey court in London, where he will hand down the sentence early next month.
&ldquo;He has apologised to the royal family and His Majesty King Charles. He is embarrassed and ashamed he brought such horrific and worrying times to their front door,&rdquo; Chail&rsquo;s barrister Nadia Chbat told the court.
According to court reports from the hearing this week, Chail&rsquo;s &ldquo;strong family unit&rdquo; includes his father, a software consultant working in aerospace; his mother, a special needs teacher; and his twin sister, a university student.
Chail was said to be suffering from mental health issues, and the threat to the late Queen was instigated by an artificial intelligence &ldquo;girlfriend&rdquo; named Sarai and inspired by his &lsquo;Star Wars&rsquo; fascination. The prosecution, meanwhile, described it as a serious crime and is seeking the maximum sentence.
Chail appeared in court by video link from the high-security psychiatric hospital Broadmoor in Berkshire. Friday&rsquo;s hearing follows evidence from psychiatrists about Chail&rsquo;s mental state as the judge considers whether he should be imprisoned, detained under the UK Mental Health Act or face a mix of the two.
Earlier, the 21-year-old had pleaded guilty to an offence under Section 2 of the Treason Act, 1842; an offence of threats to kill contrary to Section 16 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861; and an offence of possession of an offensive weapon contrary to Section 1 of the Prevention of Crime Act 1953.
&ldquo;He had made a video of himself stating his desire to harm the late Queen, which he sent to a group of contacts shortly before he was arrested. Further enquiries into Chail uncovered further evidence of his planning and motives. Evidence recovered by officers showed that he harboured ill-feeling towards the British empire for its past treatment of Indian people,&rdquo; a Met Police statement noted.
The Queen, who died in September last year, was in her private apartments at Windsor Castle at the time of Chail&rsquo;s intrusion on the morning of December 25, 2021. Two officers saw the intruder within the grounds of the Castle, and one approached him.
He was wearing black clothing and a handmade metal mask and said to the officers he was there to kill Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Chail was carrying a crossbow loaded with a bolt, and the officers drew their Taser gun and arrested him.
The social media video that emerged later showed a masked man identifying himself as Indian Sikh Jaswant Singh Chail and saying he wanted to &ldquo;assassinate&rdquo; the Queen as revenge for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar in 1919.
Under the 1842 Treason Act, it is an offence to assault the British Sovereign or have a firearm or offensive weapon in their presence with intent to injure or alarm them or to cause a breach of peace.&nbsp;

"We believe we&rsquo;ve been the victim of thefts over a long period of time and, frankly, more could have been done to prevent them," he said, adding that security at the museum had been tightened.
The antiquarian community was cooperating with the museum to help return some of the missing pieces, he said.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed on Thursday that a man had been interviewed in connection with alleged thefts.

Fischer, a German art historian, said he would step down with immediate effect because of lapses in procedures that allowed the items to be taken.
"It is evident that the British Museum did not respond as comprehensively as it should have in response to the warnings in 2021, and to the problem that has now fully emerged," he said.

The top court told the petitioner, "Our country is secular and Hinduism is a way of life, which has assimilated everyone and there is no bigotry in it". It also said the history of the country should not haunt its present and future generations.

A new British Indian Army Memorial, commemorating the sacrifice of millions of Indian soldiers who fought alongside the British during the two World Wars, is to be built in the Scottish city of Glasgow after the local council approved the plans.
Glasgow City Council cleared the planning application recently, subject to conditions, paving the way for finalising the designs for the memorial to be built near Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum.
The memorial initiative is being led by the Colourful Heritage multimedia project, which celebrates the history of Scotland's South Asian community, and is visualised as Scotland&rsquo;s first permanent memorial wall to recognise the service and sacrifice of over 4 million soldiers of the British Indian Army.

It is intended to honour the special link between Scotland and Force K6, an all-Muslim Punjabi regiment that escaped from Dunkirk during World War II, and made its way to Scotland.
It also aims to represent the key values of "selfless commitment and respect for others" that was epitomised by local campaigner Isobel Harling, who was honoured with the British Empire Medal (BEM) for tirelessly looking after the Force K6 graves in Kingussie in the Scottish Highlands for more than 70 years.
Colourful Heritage, which collates first-hand accounts of early South Asian migrants to Scotland, held several focus groups to narrow down ideas for the new memorial design, including involving schools and multi-faith local community members.
The team has proposed a multi-structure memorial design, which has been discussed with the charity Ancre Somme Association Scotland and their architect.
According to &lsquo;The Glasgow Times&rsquo;, samples of the materials for the pavilion and surrounding blocks and full details of the designs and content of carvings into the stone will now be submitted for council approval.
The memorial will feature a chattri (an elevated, dome-shaped pavilion) and pillars, which will be carved creating a South Asian design, and include benches so people can sit and reflect amid new cherry trees to be planted.
The call for such a memorial was backed by members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs) from across the political spectrum last year.&nbsp;

Britain&rsquo;s first female Sikh MP has written to the UK government calling for an independent inquiry into a state-funded National Health Service (NHS) hospital trust in Birmingham following the suicide of an Indian-origin junior doctor and several reports of bullying she has received from staff.
Preet Kaur Gill, who is the member of Parliament for Birmingham Edgbaston where the hospital trust is based, on Wednesday published her letter to UK Health Secretary Steve Barclay on Twitter, which calls for an inquiry into the culture at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB).
She referenced the suicide of 35-year-old Dr Vaishnavi Kumar who worked at Birmingham Queen Elizabeth Hospital and whose inquest last month heard how she felt &ldquo;belittled&rdquo; at work and would come home and cry.

&ldquo;In the wake of the inquest following the heart-breaking suicide of Dr Vaishnavi Kumar, where bullying and condescension at work was cited as a contributing factor in her death, I am absolutely determined that this must be a turning point for the Trust,&rdquo; reads Gill&rsquo;s letter dated December 14.
&ldquo;I have been inundated by messages from UHB staff, past and present, who have contacted me to share their experience of what has been repeatedly described as a toxic culture that has had an alarming impact on staff and patient care. Staff have been bullied and demeaned for raising concerns about policies and practices that they believe have compromised patient care, and in some cases even led to deaths,&rdquo; it notes.
The senior Opposition Labour Party MP and shadow secretary of state for international development said many of the staff who have been in contact with her have described a &ldquo;put up or shut up&rdquo; culture at the NHS hospitals trust.
An investigation by BBC&rsquo;s &lsquo;Newsnight&rsquo; programme earlier this month found that doctors at the Trust were &ldquo;punished&rdquo; for raising safety concerns.
The Birmingham and Solihull Integrated Care Board (ICB) has since announced a three-part review into the culture at UHB, with the first report expected next month.
However, Gill is calling for matters to go further with an independent inquiry in order to give confidence to whistleblowers who would want to feel safe to come forward with their evidence.
The UHB is one of the UK&rsquo;s big NHS trusts, which manages a number of hospitals in the area.
&ldquo;We welcome the support that is being put in place and we look forward to working positively and constructively with our NHS colleagues,&rdquo; a UHB statement said.
&ldquo;This will build upon the work already under way across UHB to understand the issues that have been highlighted. It is very clear that there is a strength of feeling in a number of areas and we are committed to addressing these. Our focus now is to continue to provide high standards of care, while supporting all colleagues, as we head into a particularly challenging winter period,&rdquo; it added.

Nitnem Gutkas, the prayer books of the Sikhs have been issued to military personnel in the British Army for the first time in a century, a media report said on Thursday, a move the Ministry of Defence said will "directly support Sikh practice, a key component of their faith".

"The Army has been providing Christian religious texts for many years and I saw the opportunity there to open the door for the Sikh faith to provide Sikh texts," Major Daljinder Singh Virdee, who is in the British Army and has spent two years campaigning for the return of the religious books, was quoted as saying by the BBC.
The Nitnem Gutkas were printed in Wiltshire and placed on a throne in a purpose-built vehicle for Sikh scriptures, the report said.
The Ministry of Defence said it hopes to "directly support Sikhs practice as a key component of their faith".
The prayer books have been printed in three languages in durable and waterproof material to withstand the rigours of military life, the report said.
They were transported to the library of the Central Gurdwara temple in London, where they were officially issued to military personnel on October 28, it said.
"For Sikh's our scriptures are not just words, they are the living embodiment of our guru. We draw moral strength and physical strength from reading the scriptures every day, it gives us discipline and it grows us spiritually," Virdee was quoted as saying in the report.
Nitnem Gutkas were first issued to military personnel more than a century ago, along with other articles of the Sikh faith, including steel daggers, bracelets and wooden combs, but have never been issued again since.
There is an original military-issued Nitnem Gutka in the National Army Museum's archives, in London, the report added.
Sikh soldiers were recruited to the British military from the 1840s onwards, and have fought at the Battle of Saragarhi; in the First World War, as the "Black Lions", as well as during the Second World War in Malaya, Burma and Italy.&nbsp;

A British woman was allegedly raped near the Arambol beach in Goa in front of her male partner by a local man under the pretext of giving her a massage, police said on Tuesday.
The accused, local resident Vincent D'Souza (32), was part of a group that illegally offered massage services near the Arambol beach in North Goa district, which is quite popular with international tourists, they said.
He had also worked as a school librarian in the past, the police said.
The Pernem police had arrested him on Monday.
As per the police complaint lodged by the middle-aged woman, who is on a Goa trip, the accused allegedly raped her under the pretext of giving her a massage when she was lying near the Sweet Water Lake, located close to the beach, along with her male partner, an official said.
The alleged incident had taken place on June 2, but the woman lodged the complaint at the Pernem police station on Monday after consulting her family members in the UK and seeking assistance from the British Embassy in India, he said.
Within an hour of getting the complaint, the Pernem police, led by inspector Vikram Naik, swung into action and arrested the accused, the official said.
A senior police official said the accused had also worked as a librarian at a school in the past.
“We have contacted the police station concerned to get his past records. Currently, he is not working as a librarian,” the official said.
On Monday night, the accused and the victim were sent for medical examination at the district hospital in Mapusa town near here.
An FIR was registered against the accused under Indian Penal Code Section 376 (rape) and the police would produce him before a local court on Monday to seek his custody, the official said.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (Pernem) Siddhant Shirodkar is supervising the investigation into the case.
