Germany has reacted to the disqualification of Rahul Gandhi from the Lok Sabha after his conviction in a defamation case saying "fundamental democratic principles" should apply in the case of the Congress leader.&nbsp;
"We have taken note of the verdict of first instance against the Indian opposition politician Rahul Gandhi as well as the suspension of his parliamentary mandate. To our knowledge, Mr Gandhi is in a position to appeal the verdict," Germany's foreign ministry spokesperson said during a press briefing
"It will then become clear whether this verdict will stand and whether the suspension of his mandate has any basis," she added.

This is reportedly the third time when Pakistan's Twitter account has been restricted in India.
Earlier in October 2022, the Twitter account of the Pakistan government was withheld in India. It was withheld earlier in July as well but had been reactivated and was visible. According to Twitter guidelines, the microblogging site takes such action in response to a valid legal demand, such as a court order.&nbsp;
In June last year, Twitter in India banned official accounts of Pakistan Embassies in the United Nations, Turkey, Iran and Egypt. In August, India blocked eight YouTube-based news channels, including one operating from Pakistan and one Facebook account for posting "fake, anti-India content" online.

Project Akashteer: Defence Ministry inks Rs 2,400 cr deal with Bharat Electronics

According to the Ministry of Defence, the first contract with BEL pertains to the procurement of the Automated Air Defence Control and Reporting System 'Project Akashteer' worth Rs 1,982 crore for the Indian Army.

In yet another boost to self-reliance in defence sector, the Ministry of Defence on Wednesday signed three contracts -- two with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Ghaziabad and one with New Space India Limited (NSIL) -- at a total cost nearly Rs 5,400 crore, to bolster the defence capabilities of the country.
According to the Ministry of Defence, the first contract with BEL pertains to the procurement of the Automated Air Defence Control and Reporting System 'Project Akashteer' worth Rs 1,982 crore for the Indian Army.
The second contract with BEL relates to the acquisition of Sarang Electronic Support Measure (ESM) systems along with the associated Engineering Support Package from BEL, Hyderabad at an overall cost of Rs 412 crore for the Indian Navy.
The contract with NSIL, a Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Department of Space, Bengaluru pertains to the procurement of an advanced Communication Satellite, GSAT 7B, which will provide High Throughput Services to the Indian Army at an overall cost of Rs 2,963 crore, said the Defence Ministry statement.

For the first time in the history of Hajj pilgrimage, 4,314 women have applied to go on the pilgrimage without a 'Mehram' or a male guardian with a blood relation, informed the Minority Affairs Ministry sources.
The Saudi Arabian government, in October, announced that Mehram, a male blood relative with whom marriage is not permissible, is no longer required to accompany a women pilgrim from any part of the world.
The applications will be cleared on priority by the Ministry and Hajj travel pilgrims list will also likely be cleared by Friday, the sources added.
This is the first time that the Ministry of Minority Affairs has received such a large pool of applications from women above the age of 45 years who wish to perform the Hajj pilgrimage without any male guardian, as per ministry sources.

'No foreign diplomat...': what Jaishankar said on Rahul Gandhi disqualification row

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday said no foreign diplomat has raised with him the issue of Rahul Gandhi's disqualification from the Lok Sabha, which was an outcome of a law "supported" by the Congress leader in the past.
Speaking at the Rising India Summit of Network18, S Jaishankar said Rahul Gandhi's disqualification as member of Lok Sabha happened as he refused to express regret about the disparaging remarks he made against a community at a public meeting four years ago.
"The law is the law, unless somebody thinks that the law is not for them," S Jaishankar said.
The minister replied in the negative to a question whether any of his diplomatic counterparts had raised the issue with him.
"Four years ago Rahul Gandhi was disparaging of a community in a public meeting. It is on public record. A member of that community took offense and began legal proceedings," S Jaishankar said, on how he would explain the issue to his counterparts abroad.
The external affairs minister said Mr Gandhi had an opportunity to rectify the situation by expressing regret, but chose not to do so.
"The legal process produced an outcome. The outcome triggered a law, which Rahul Gandhi had himself supported some years ago," he said referring to the verdict of a Gujarat court sentencing the Congress leader to a two-year jail term in a defamation case.
S Jaishankar said the law has been applied to 10-12 elected representatives, including of the ruling party.
As per Section 8(3) of the Representation of the Peoples Act, a person convicted of any offence and sentenced to imprisonment for not less than two years, shall be disqualified.
The disqualification, as per the Act, shall begin on the date of the conviction and continue for a period of six years after his release.
In Rahul Gandhi's case, unless the conviction is stayed by an appellate court, his disqualification will continue for a total of eight years - two years of imprisonment plus six post-release.

2008 Jaipur blasts: Rajasthan HC acquits all accused given death sentence

The Rajasthan High Court on Wednesday acquitted four men who were given the death sentence by a lower court for the 2008 serial Jaipur blasts that killed 71 people and slammed the investigating agencies over their "shoddy investigation".
It also affirmed the acquittal of a fifth accused by the trial court. Jaipur was rocked by a series of blasts on May 13, 2008 when bombs went off one after another at Manak Chawk Khanda, Chandpole Gate, Badi Chaupad, Chhoti Chaupad, Tripolia Gate, Johri Bazar and Sanganeri Gate.
The explosions in the evening left 71 people dead and 185 injured.
According to advocate S S Ali, the counsel for the accused, the high court lambasted the investigating agencies for doing a shoddy investigation in connecting the chain of evidence. The court also directed the director general of police of Rajasthan to take action against the officers involved in the investigation.
Ali said the court found the entire theory presented by the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS), which investigated the case, wrong. He said the high court issued directions to the chief secretary to monitor the case.
"The ATS failed to prove the travel plan of the accused that they had travelled from Delhi to Jaipur in a bus on May 13, had lunch at a restaurant, purchased cycles, planted bombs and returned the same day to Delhi in Shatabdi express. The ATS could not produce bus tickets," the counsel said.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

While 14,446 students from the three categories dropped out from Central Universities during the period, 4,444 students dropped out from IITs, and 366 from IIMs, the minister said.

More than 19,000 students from OBC, SC and ST categories dropped out from Central Universities, IITs, and IIMs during 2018-2023, according to the Ministry of Education.
The data was shared by Union Minister of State for Education, Subhas Sarkar, in response to a written question in Rajya Sabha.
According to available records, the number of drop out students from 2018 to 2023 in Central Universities (CUs), Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) in various courses is 19,256.
While 14,446 students from the three categories dropped out from Central Universities during the period, 4,444 students dropped out from IITs, and 366 from IIMs, the minister said.
&ldquo;In the Higher Education sector students have multiple options and they choose to migrate across institutions and from one course or programme to another in the same institution. The migration or withdrawal, if any, is mainly on account of securing seats by the students in other departments or institutions of their choice or on any personal ground,&rdquo; Mr. Sarkar said.
No case of caste discrimination and alienation of SC and ST students have been reported from IITs in the last five years, Mr. Sarkar informed the Rajya Sabha in response to a written question.
The Minister informed that seven cases of suicides by SC and ST students have been reported in IITs while the same number of students from the two categories in Central Universities died by suicide since 2018.

SC dismissed a petition which wanted the Narendra Modi government to set up a 'renaming commission'.

The Supreme Court on 27 February 2023 dismissed a petition which wanted the Narendra Modi government to set up a 'renaming commission'.
The public interest litigation (PIL) wanted such a commission to restore the "original" names of ancient, cultural, and religious places which were "renamed" by "invaders" in the past. While Mughal Garden was recently renamed Amrit Udyan, the government did nothing to rename the roads named after invaders, the PIL said and contended that the continuation of these names is against the sovereignty and other civil rights guaranteed under the Constitution.
The top court said that the petition would resurrect issues which would "keep the country on the boil". A two-judge bench added that it was a fact that India was invaded and ruled by a foreign power and that part of history cannot be "wished out".
The top court told the petitioner, "Our country is secular and Hinduism is a way of life, which has assimilated everyone and there is no bigotry in it". It also said the history of the country should not haunt its present and future generations.

An ISRO satellite has captured a colourful glimpse of Earth. Using Earth Observation Satellite (EOS-06), which is also known as Oceansat-3, the Indian space agency gave a closer look of the Earth's surface with a special focus on India which beams in a rust orange colour.
The high-resolution pictures which were captured between February 1-15, 2023 are part of a phenomenon called Global False Colour Composite mosaic.
"Global False Colour Composite mosaic generated by NRSC/ISRO using images from Ocean Colour Monitor on EOS-06 Mosaic with 1 km spatial resolution combines 2939 images after processing 300 GB of data to show Earth as seen during Feb 1-15, 2023," ISRO tweeted.
The satellite has captured 13 distinct wavelengths of Earth to provide information about global vegetation cover on land. Due to the variation in wavelengths, continents, countries, oceans appear in different colours.
