The BRICS summit 2023 is being held in Johannesburg from August 22 to 24 and it will be the first in-person meeting of the bloc since 2019 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.&nbsp;

The Indian government has not clearly stated if the two leaders will hold a meeting in South Africa.&nbsp;
Asked at a media briefing whether Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping will hold talks on the sidelines of the BRICS summit, Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra only said that the schedule of the prime minister's bilateral meetings is being finalised.
"We have a positive intent and an open mind when it comes to BRICS expansion," Kwatra said.

Days after the Indian Army and the Chinese People&rsquo;s Liberation Army held the 19th round of military dialogue, the two sides held major-general level talks to discuss outstanding problems along the Line of Actual Control on August 18, Hindustan Times reported quoting officials.
The talks led by different major generals and their PLA counterparts, were reportedly held at separate locations in eastern Ladakh.
These talks come ahead of PM Modi and Xi Jinping's possible meeting on the sidelines of the upcoming BRICS summit this week.
Last week's military dialogue had concluded without any significant outcome.

India is currently the chair of the grouping that also includes Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa. The group on Tuesday described Covid-19 as the most serious global challenges in recent history. The BRICS foreign ministers meet on Tuesday underlined the urgency for expeditious development and deployment of Covid-19 vaccines, especially in developing countries. The group also called for further close cooperation among various stakeholders for a diversified vaccine portfolio. The US and several other countries have also supported the proposal to waive patents on Covid vaccines.
