Punjab Vigilance Bureau arrested two RTA officials, Jatinder Kumar and Mukesh, for accepting a Rs 5500 bribe in Pathankot. The arrest followed a complaint from Surjit Kumar about a vehicle registration transfer.

The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) apprehended two officials of the Registration and Transport Authority (RTA) in Pathankot on Monday for accepting a bribe of Rs 5500.
Jatinder Kumar, a data entry operator, and Mukesh, both posted at the RTA office, were arrested after a complaint was lodged by Surjit Kumar, a resident of Manwal village in Pathankot. Kumar alleged that the accused demanded a bribe for transferring his vehicle's registration from Himachal Pradesh to Punjab.
An official spokesperson of the state Vigilance Bureau also added that after a preliminary enquiry into this complaint the VB team laid a trap during which both the aforementioned accused were caught red handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 5500 from the complainant in the presence of official witnesses.&nbsp;
&nbsp; He added that in this regard a case under Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against both the accused at VB Police Station, Amritsar range. Pronouncing the verdict, the CJI said bribery is not protected by parliamentary privileges as it erodes probity in public life.

The Supreme Court on Monday held that MPs and MLAs do not enjoy immunity from prosecution for taking bribe to make a speech or cast a vote in the legislature.
A seven-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud unanimously overruled the 1998 verdict delivered by a five-judge bench in the JMM bribery case by which MPs and MLAs were granted immunity from prosecution for taking bribe to make a speech or vote in the legislature.
Pronouncing the verdict, the CJI said bribery is not protected by parliamentary privileges and the interpretation of the 1998 verdict is contrary to Articles 105 and 194 of the Constitution.
Articles 105 and 194 deal with the powers and privileges of MPs and MLAs in Parliament and legislative assemblies.
The CJI, who read the operative part of the verdict for the bench, said that bribery is not immune under the articles as it erodes probity in public life.&nbsp;
