The great Brian Lara feels if there is anyone who can get close to his lofty feats, including the record 400 not out, it is this 22-year-old from India.

Yashasvi Jaiswal's Test career is just 9 games old but the great Brian Lara feels if there is anyone who can get close to his lofty feats, including the record 400 not out, it is the 22-year-old southpaw from India.
Lara's high praise for Jaiswal doesn't come out of the blue. The left two-handers share a special bond, having spent a lot of time over the past year following their "4 am conversation" during the IPL when the West Indian was coaching Sunrisers Hyderabad and the young opener was in the Rajasthan Royals' camp.
A lot has changed since IPL 2023 with Jaiswal now becoming an integral part of India's Test and T20 team. His exploits in the longest format stand out as he averages close to 70 with three hundreds including two double tons in the recent home series against England. What has impressed Lara is Jaiswal's ability to change gears as per the situation of the game.
"If I feel my records are threatened, Jaiswal has got a very good chance to do so. He has got capabilities, couple of double hundreds already. He is that good," Lara told PTI editors at its headquarters in an interaction arranged by Star Sports where he is a commentator and expert for the ongoing IPL.
Lara, who recently turned 55, is one of the all-time greats of the game having amassed close to 12,000 runs in Tests and over 10,000 runs in ODIs. His record of the highest individual total, 400 not out against England in 2004, still stands tall.
Lara fondly looked back at his first meeting with Jaiswal when asked about a light moment they shared on the sidelines of the Rajasthan Royals and SRH clash in the ongoing season.
"The only thing I can reveal about that (conversation) is I think he is an outstanding young cricketer. what I like about him is that he is very humble and willing to work. The first time I met him (last year), I immediately found myself attached to him.
"After the game (SRH vs Royals), I went to the hotel with a friend of mine from the Caribbean who knew Jos Buttler. It was midnight and Jaiswal found me. I promise you I left the hotel at 4 in the morning.
"He just wanted to hear more and more and more. That is one of his amazing traits. His ability to want to learn as much as possible. Our conversations are about trying to make him a better cricketer. I am available for anyone that has my number. I am happy to talk cricket." Being a left-hander himself, it is natural for Lara to be biased towards that tribe. Another southpaw he has great admiration for is Abhishek Sharma with whom he spent time at SRH.
"Again he is someone who I met while I was batting coach of SRH. I spent two years there. I am allowed to a bit biased when I see a left-hander, I just love a left-hander. Myself and Abhishek have developed a very good relationship, these youngsters are very humble. they want to learn.
"What I like about these two, they want to get to great heights. I have great admiration for both." The legend from Trinidad reckons that usually records are threatened by batters who score quickly and Jaiswal has that ability along with the hunger to bat long.
His 400 not out has not been surpassed in 20 years and Lara hopes he is still around to see the day when his record is broken.
"I think now, the pace that these guys are batting at. And you look at the guys over the years who have challenged that 300-mark and plus. It's Chris Gayle. It's Virender Sehwag. It's Sanath Jayasuriya, It's Inzamam-ul-Haq. It's Matthew Hayden. These are guys who destroy bowling attacks.
"...you would not say that for a Rahul Dravid or Steve Smith in the present case. But a player who likes to score quickly, will have an opportunity. You know, Jaiswal, I mean, I was in Australia when David Warner came close and you know, he's an aggressive player.
"So I believe yes, I think it will be broken at some point in time. I think it has to be that person's destiny. Everything has to fall into place. And... I look forward to that time. I hope it happens, while I'm still around," he said.

Admitting that T20 leagues have devoured a lot of Test cricket’s space, West Indian legend Brian Lara appealed to the ICC to step in to give a structure to the unrelenting invasion of the franchise-based tournaments.

Admitting that T20 leagues have devoured a lot of Test cricket&rsquo;s space, West Indian legend Brian Lara appealed to the ICC to step in to give a structure to the unrelenting invasion of the franchise-based tournaments.
In the latest instance that fuelled questions over the relevance of Tests, South Africa recently sent an under-strength squad to New Zealand as their first-choice players were involved in the SA20 at home.
&ldquo;I think ICC (should) put their head together and find a way where franchise cricket takes over, but in a much more structured way and not in terms of the free fall that is going on at the moment,&rdquo; Lara said in an interaction with PTI editors at its headquarters which was facilitated by Star Sports where he is a commentator and expert for the ongoing IPL.
&ldquo;I hope the astute thinkers could find a way to make sure that it (Test) remains relevant. I like the Test Championship and I think it is important to make sure that the game remains relevant.&rdquo;
So, is cricket now taking the football route where leagues take precedence over international assignments? While Lara agreed in principle to the point, he found differences too in the two models.
&ldquo;Well, yes (cricket following the football way). Let's just look at football. For instance, other than the big cups &ndash; European cups, World Cup, South American cups &ndash; they may have a few friendlies. So, Barcelona, Manchester United, Manchester City, they have their footballers generally for 11 months of the year.
&ldquo;That seems to be working for football. It's taken off the burden as well for each country to be finding ways of making money by having football matches,&rdquo; Lara began.
But Lara said the wealth being accumulated among three big nations &ndash; India, Australia and England &ndash; presented a rather different scenario in cricket.
&ldquo;The West Indies now is in a situation where our gate receipts can't make us survive. So, we are very thankful whenever India tours the West Indies. It's a lot of TV rights money passing around which is great.
&ldquo;So, it's hard to see outside of the big three &ndash; Australia, England and India &ndash; how countries are going to survive when economically it's tough for them.&rdquo; From a cricketing perspective, the elegant left-hander said teams often not having their best players available also make things tough for teams outside the big three.
Lara might have had someone like Trent Boult in mind as the pacer recently turned down New Zealand central contract to become a T20 freelancer.
&ldquo;Secondly, they (teams) don't have their best players playing because their best players are making a living for their family elsewhere (leagues),&rdquo; he added.
In March this year, BCCI had introduced a Test Cricket Incentive Scheme, an additional reward structure on top of the existing match fee, to ensure parity with match fees in other formats and leagues.
Lara welcomed the step but added that bringing spectators to the ground was equally paramount to sustain the game and the sponsors&rsquo; interest.
&ldquo;Incentivizing, or what BCCI is doing because they have the money, is one aspect of it. Of course, remuneration to the players is great to keep them interested in the game.
&ldquo;But when you're walking to a Test match and there's nobody at that Test match, then it's not encouraging. Try to get them (crowd) back into the ground,&rdquo; said Lara.
The Trinidadian said having a stadium packed to the rafters is important from the sponsors&rsquo; view as well.
&ldquo;I'm almost sure you&rsquo;ve experienced it in India, where a sponsor preferred to spend his money on three hours of cricket instead of five days of cricket. &lsquo;Hey, you have five days to promote your product.&rsquo; &ldquo;The corporate person will say: &lsquo;But there's nobody to promote it to. Give me three hours. I will pay even more money.&rsquo; So, I think getting the crowd back is also something that should be discussed,&rdquo; he explained.
While Lara has little doubt that the T20 version caters to spectators&rsquo; demands, he said the modern-day viewers should be educated about the unique ebbs and flow of five-day cricket.
&ldquo;Well, I hope it hasn't (Test not losing relevance). The shorter version of the game is taken over and it is entertainment and that's what people look for. We haven't educated the present-day public about the importance of batting a session and not losing a wicket."

West Indies legend Brian Lara feels Indian pacer Umran Malik 'could definitely become one of the best' players in the future for Team India provided the youngster adds some variety to his bowling.
"He will be a sensation, but very quickly he will have to learn that fast bowling really does not trouble the best players in the world. You have to have the ability to do something with the ball, be sensible, and maybe understand times when you have to trickle back or understand the times when you have to up the tempo. He is very young and has got a lot of years ahead of him," Lara said on 'Wake Up With Sorabh' YouTube channel.

But they all know that at some point in time, they had to come with a lot more tricks than just being able to bowl fast. If he (Umran Malik) works with Dale Steyn, he could definitely be one of the best India could produce," he added.

IPL franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad have appointed former New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori as the head coach for the 2024 season. The Sunrisers have parted ways with West Indian legend Brian Lara, who served as the head coach for just one season.
Lara, who was the batting consultant for the franchise in the 2022 season was promoted to the role of head coach ahead of IPL 2023. However, the Sunrisers finished bottom of the table, with just 8 points. They lost 10 games with Brian Lara at the helm.
His replacement, Daniel Vettori, has prior coaching experience with the Royal Challengers Bangalore, where he was the head coach from 2014 to 2018. In fact, Vettori was RCB's head coach when the franchise lost the 2016 final to Sunrisers Hyderabad. He was also the assistant coach for the Australian men's national team recently.

The board appointed a 3-member panel consisting of former cricketers Brian Lara, Mickey Arthur, and a senior judge Patrick Thomson to probe the Windies' early exit from last year's T20 World Cup.&nbsp; The report of the review group which was made public on Thursday pointed out that West Indies cricket will cease to exist if players represent the nation on an optional basis and instead take part in lucrative T20 leagues across the world.
Nicholas Pooran-led side began their campaign Down Under with losses to Scotland and Ireland. This was their 2nd poor performance on the World stage 2021 T20 WC. The review group highlighted how the players who had appreciable performances in franchise T20 leagues were constantly not making themselves available for the national team selection. Andre Russell and Sunil Narine did not make themselves available for the T20 World Cup. Shimron Hetmyer's absence, the review report noted 'was a significant loss to the batting unit' 'In this group's view there is significant distrust between the players and administration and this distrust is inimical to ensuring that the best 11 players turn out for the Windies team in every match', the report said.&nbsp; The report that laid out a strategic short-term goal also suggested the board shortlist a pool of players for each format which would help them in the next edition of the T20 World Cup in 2024.&nbsp;

&nbsp;India's 1st major sporting event
India hosted the first-ever Asian Games which took place in Delhi. The week-long event started on 4th March 1951. &nbsp;India stood 2nd in the marquee event and collected as many as 51 medals which included 15 gold, 16 silver, and 20 bronze.&nbsp;
Olympic Glory for New India
KD Jadhav brought home independent India's 1st ever Olympic medal. The Maharashtra-born star won the bronze medal in the Bantamweight category of wrestling at the Helsinki Olympics in 1952.
India's 1st World Champion
Wilson Jones who won the World Amateur Billiards Championships in 1958 and 1964 was the first to win a world championship across sports in independent India. He was awarded Arjuna Award in 1963, Padma Shri in 1965, and the Guru Dronacharya award in 1996.&nbsp;
The Big Heartbreak India&rsquo;s first legend of the track, Flying Sikh Milkha Singh had missed out on a Bronze medal at the 1960 Rome Olympics by just 0.1s in the 400m race. Though he won at Commonwealth, and Asian Games and made multiple national records, the Olympic medal eluded him endlessly.&nbsp;
A new dawn in Indian cricket
Underdogs India defeated the legendary West Indies who entered the campaign as hot favourites and lifted their first-ever World Cup. The moment that changed Indian cricket forever. Captain Kapil Dev received the trophy from Prince Charles.
A broken jaw - No problem!
Bowling with a broken jaw, Indian ace Anil Kumble dismissed Brian Lara in the Antigua Test in May 2002. On the following day, he underwent surgery for his jaw.&nbsp;
 Shirtless Dada at Lord's
Sourav Ganguly took off his jersey, swung it in the air at Lord's, and celebrated the historic NatWest triumph against England. While the win was special, cricketers, management &amp; audience were apparently allowed to maintain the dress code of Lord's. But, Dada flouted the norm as he celebrated the iconic victory in the most iconic way.&nbsp;
'India win the World Cup'
It took another 28 years for India to win another World Cup. In 2011, the MS Dhoni-led team defeated Sri Lanka to lift the trophy again. Team India dedicated the World Cup victory to 'God of Cricket' Sachin Tendulkar
Farewell, Little Master!
A billion Indians had tears in their eyes when Sachin Tendulkar walked out for one final time in Mumbai's Wankhede. Tendulkar retired from all forms of cricket after his 200th Test which was against West Indies.

For the first time in the Thomas Cup's 73 years of existence, India were crowned the Champions. The Indian men's team defeated the 14-time winners Indonesia who were the 14-time winner&nbsp;

The 32-year-old scored an unbeaten 410 runs off 450 balls with the help of 45 fours and 3 sixes for Glamorgan in a county game against Leicestershire.
He also became the 9th player in the world to score 400-plus runs in an innings in first-class cricket. It is the highest individual score in first-class cricket in the 21st century.
Glamorgan chose to declare the innings on 795-5 against Leicestershire. Hence, Northeast couldn't challenge Brian Lara's world record individual score of 501.
Interestingly, Lara who scored over 400 runs two times in first-class cricket also made the world record in English county cricket.

English batsman Sam Northeast has become only the fourth cricketer to score over 400 runs in a single innings in the English county game.

Bumrah dismissed 3 English top-order batters in the first innings of the ongoing Test. With those 3 scalps, Bumrah took his wickets tally to 21 for the series and became the highest wicket-taker for India in a Test series in England.
The 28-year-old surpassed Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who had picked up 19 wickets in 2014. Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma are third and fourth on the list respectively with 18 wickets each.
Bumrah also shattered former Indian captain Kapil Dev's 41-year-old record to become the highest Indian wicket-taker after the first 30 Tests.
Bumrah now has 126 wickets in his first 30 Test matches as compared to Kapil's 124 wickets.

It was believed that Simon wasn't happy with the auction picks hence he decided to step down from his role.
On a YouTube podcast by 'The Grade Cricketer, the newly appointed assistant coach of Delhi Capitals, Shane Watson said, "Alarm bells started when Simon Katich left just after the auction. That's normally not a great sight because Katich is one of the most generally good people."
