First, let&rsquo;s understand the difference between stroke, dementia and post-stroke dementia. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States, a stroke occurs when blood supply to the brain gets blocked or when a blood vessel in the brain bursts. In either case, the affected parts of the brain get damaged or wither away. Dementia, on the other hand, is a general term for symptoms related to declining brain function. Post-stroke dementia is a condition where symptoms of dementia occur after a stroke.
The study
Researchers at&nbsp;Tianjin Medical University in China studied 365,682 participants from the UK Biobank who were recruited between 2006 and 2010 and followed until 2020. At the outset participants self-reported their coffee and tea intake. Over the study period, 5,079 participants developed dementia and 10,053 experienced at least one stroke.

<li>Those who drank 3-5 cups of coffee or tea per day had the lowest incidence of stroke or dementia</li>
<li>Those who drank 2-3 cups per day were at a 32% lower risk compared with those who drank neither coffee nor tea</li>

Published in the&nbsp;International Journal of Scientific Research, the study of 68 volunteers found that a power nap enhances&nbsp;cognition and it is especially helpful in improving&nbsp;calculative ability or execution of skillful tasks like driving.

In the study, participants were asked to solve the number game Sudoku. When&nbsp;people got stuck at a certain difficulty level, the test group was allowed to take a nap for one hour while the other group&nbsp;got a wakeful rest.&nbsp;Out of the 37 who stayed awake, 6 were able to solve the&nbsp;puzzle whereas out of the 31 who slept,&nbsp;as many as 16 accomplished the task.&nbsp;&nbsp;
The study&rsquo;s lead author explains that while napping at work gets a bad rep, their findings show that&nbsp;power naps offer some&nbsp;potential usefulness&nbsp;in boosting&nbsp;cognitive performance.

The MIND diet is a combination of the&nbsp;Mediterranean and DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet. As part of the diet, a person&nbsp;in the study&nbsp;must&nbsp;eat at least three servings of whole grains, a green leafy vegetable and one other vegetable every day -- along with a glass of wine.
They would&nbsp;snack most days on nuts, have beans every other day or so, eat poultry and berries at least twice a week and fish at least once a week.&nbsp;Adhering to the diet also meant&nbsp;limiting&nbsp;the intake of unhealthy foods&nbsp;defined as red meat, butter and stick margarine, cheese, pastries and sweets, and fried or fast food.&nbsp;
Researchers explained that the diet seemed to protect against decline and may contribute to cognitive resilience in the elderly. In fact, a&nbsp;higher MIND diet score was&nbsp;linked with better memory and thinking skills independently of Alzheimer's disease pathology and other common age-related brain pathologies.&nbsp;

Published&nbsp;in the journal&nbsp;<a href="https://www.biologicalpsychiatrycnni.org/article/S2451-9022(21)00196-8/fulltext">Biological Psychiatry: Cognitive Neuroscience and Neuroimaging</a>, the study found that&nbsp;poverty and its by-products such as stress, inadequate nutrition, less access to health care impact brain development&nbsp;
Even after adjusting for factors&nbsp;like&nbsp;base psychopathology and any significant life events, the team was able to&nbsp;link poverty with&nbsp;reduced&nbsp;cognitive function, high-risk behaviours, social and educational function&nbsp;nearly 13 years after the children joined the study.&nbsp;
A separate ongoing study&nbsp;in the journal&nbsp;<a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0306453021002146?via%3Dihub">Psychoneuroendocrinology</a>&nbsp;also&nbsp;finds that teens who grew up in poverty&nbsp;experience physical signs of stress at higher levels than their peers from more economically secure families.&nbsp;
