Indian bonds are likely to get $100 billion of foreign inflows in the coming years, due to global bond index inclusion, according to HSBC Asset Management. The inclusion of Indian bonds &nbsp;into global indexes may trigger inflows of as much as $50 billion and a similar amount of flows is also expected from large institutional investors, sovereign wealth funds and pension funds.

As per Bloomberg, India has become a favorite market for Wall Street investors, attracted by one of the world&rsquo;s fastest rates of economic growth and as it positions itself as an alternative to China. Meanwhile the global funds remain light on holdings as foreigners own only 2% of the government bonds.

&ldquo;India really stands out as a fairly attractive destination for a strategic allocation from various large institutional investors,&rdquo; Shriram Ramanathan, chief investment officer of fixed income at HSBC Asset Management&rsquo;s India unit told Bloomberg. &ldquo;People start appreciating some of the nuances and the risk returns that it has delivered over the last five and 10 years which make it an extremely attractive proposition.&rdquo;
India's trillion dollar sovereign bond market is also looking at a foreign money inflow rush as it is set to be included in JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co.&rsquo;s emerging markets bond index in June. Meanwhile, Bloomberg Index Services Ltd., as launched a consultation to solicit feedback on the proposed inclusion of India&rsquo;s Fully Accessible Route, or FAR bonds in its emerging market local currency index. FAR bonds are securities that have no investment curbs for foreigners.
India&rsquo;s 10-year bond yield at 7.17 per cent are the highest in emerging Asia.

In a big boost to India's debt market, JP Morgan Chase &amp; Co is set to add Indian government bonds to its benchmark emerging-market index. This will drive significant foreign fund inflows to the debt market.
The Indian bonds will be added to the JP Morgan Government Bond Index-Emerging Markets from June 28, 2024. India will have a maximum weight of 10% on the index, said a statement.&nbsp;
The firm's global head of index research, Gloria Kim in the statement said that the move follows the Indian government&rsquo;s introduction of bonds that can be fully owned by foreigners in 2020, as well as steps to aid foreign portfolio investments

As per Bloomberg, the decision is the latest sign of India&rsquo;s growing appeal to international investors as the country&rsquo;s economic growth outstrips peers, its geopolitical influence grows and global companies including Apple Inc. look for alternatives to China. Inflows into the Indian bond market have been picking up in the recent year's and the country's assets have proven resilient to financial turbulence that has roiled other developing-nations. Ahead of finance ministry's meet with PSU banks on Saturday, the government has asked the state-owned lenders to share their bond portfolio data

As per Business Standard, the Union finance ministry has asked public sector banks (PSBs) to furnish details of their bond portfolios ahead of their meeting with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday, amid the turmoil in global banks.
As an exercise to determine the resilience of banks against interest-rate risks, the ministry has specifically requested details on holdings under the held-to-maturity (HTM) and available-for-sale (AFS) portfolios, bankers said
While the HTM portfolio protects banks from potential losses on bond holdings, the government wants to ascertain how banks will respond in the case of large bond sales from that book, sources said.
Sitharaman will hold a meeting with all PSB heads on Saturday where she will review their work, including lending to infrastructure and flow of cash transfers to beneficiaries under various government flagship schemes.

10k electoral bonds worth 1 crore each recently printed by Indian government

The bank responded to two RTIs by one Kanhaiya Kumar wherein it also revealed that the government had last printed electoral bonds in 2019.

In a reply to RTIs, the State Bank of India has said that the Union government recently printed 10k electoral bonds worth 1 crore each.&nbsp;
It stated that 10,000 electoral bonds were printed between August 1 and October 29. The installments of electoral bonds for Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat elections were sold between October 1 and October 10.
The bank responded to two RTIs by one Kanhaiya Kumar wherein it also revealed that the government had last printed electoral bonds in 2019. At that time, bonds worth Rs 11,400 crore were printed at the India Security Press in Nashik.
Over the years, electoral bonds of Rs 1 crore have been the most popular. According to SBI's reply, about 94 per cent of the total electoral bond value sold so far has been in the form of bonds worth Rs 1 crore. Electoral bonds of denominations of Rs 1,000, Rs 10,000, Rs 1 lakh and Rs 10 lakh are also included.

Issue price and interest rate: The issue price has been fixed at ₹5,091 per gram of gold. Investors are paid a fixed rate of interest of 2.5% per annum payable semi-annually on the nominal value.
Main dates: The Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI’s) sovereign gold bond scheme has opened for application on June 20 and it will remain open for application till June 24. This is the first tranche for the SGB Scheme 2022-23. According to media reports, the scheme’s next issue will open on August 22, 2022, and close on August 26.  
What are Sovereign Gold Bond scheme: Under the sovereign gold bond scheme, the RBI issues the bonds on behalf of the government. These bonds are sold through banks, Stock Holding Corporation of India (SHCIL), Clearing Corporation of India (CCIL), post offices, and stock exchanges – National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) and BSE. 
The scheme was launched in November 2015 with an objective to reduce the demand for physical gold and shift a part of the domestic savings – used for the purchase of gold – into financial savings.

Who Can Invest: Resident individuals, Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs), trusts, universities and charitable institutions can buy the bonds.

Minimum & Maximum Size: Minimum permissible investment will be one gram of gold, while the maximum limit of subscription shall be 4 kg for individual, 4 kg for HUF and 20 kg for trusts and similar entities per fiscal year (April-March) notified by the government from time to time.
