The Congress party is set to decide on its BMC election strategy on July 7. Meetings involve prominent leaders discussing potential alliances and organizational challenges.

The Congress will decide on July 7 whether it will fight the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections in alliance or go it solo in the contest.
AICC general secretary in-charge of Maharashtra unit, Ramesh Chennithala, announced this after a meeting of senior leaders of the party from the state.
He said the party will also consult its local leaders on the issue for other local body elections across Maharashtra.
Senior party leaders from the state including former chief minister Prithviraj Chavan, Rajani Patil, Pradesh Congress president Harshwardhan Vasantrao Sapkal and former PCC chief Nana Patole were present in the meeting held here.
They later met Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge at his residence and briefed him about the discussions.
Chennithala later told reporters that the meeting with senior leaders of Maharashtra was held at AICC headquarters to discuss the upcoming local body elections.
"We discussed our future strategy and other important issues. We will continue to strengthen the party in Maharashtra. From now on, one such meeting will be organised every month where senior leaders from the state would meet and discuss important issues before the party," he said.
He added that discussions were held on upcoming local bodies elections and Congress leaders discussed on how to move forward.
"The issue of bogus polling and irregularities during last assembly polls was also discussed. Ways and means to strengthen the Congress in Maharashtra were also discussed," he said.
"The political affairs committee of the Congress in Maharashtra would hold a meeting in Mumbai on July 7 where a final decision on whether to go alone or in alliance in the upcoming BMC elections will be taken," he said.
Chennithala also said that the party will organise a brainstorming session or 'shivir' for the state soon.
"No decision has been taken yet on an alliance, we will be doing that in the coming days," he said when asked again on whether the Congress would contest the local bodies elections on its own or with other alliance partners.
Asked about going with Raj Thackeray, who has spoken often against north Indians in Mumbai, Chennithala said, "We do not agree with Raj Thackeray's statement about ousting people from North from Mumbai." Chavan said the meeting began at 10 am and continued till 4 pm, with several party leaders from Maharashtra discussing about organisational issues.
"Everyone shared their views on how we should contest the local body elections," he said.
Maharashtra Congress president Sapkal said meetings will be held across the state to seek the views of local party units to explore political alliances for local body elections.
Patole later told reporters that the BJP was bringing the issue of Hindi language only to divert attention from the failures of its government in Maharashtra.
He alleged that the language issue is one brought by the BJP to divert attention from price rise, corruption and misgovernance.
"I would urge people not to get carried away by such diversionary tactics of the BJP," Patole said.

Mumbai's famous Kala Ghoda is soon going to be made a pedestrian-only pathway. In a recent communication, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said that they are planning to beautify the internal roads in the area by paving them with cobble stones. The civic body said that once the project is completed, vehicles will not be allowed on the streets.
Former BJP corporator from Colaba, Makarand Narwekar, while speaking with The Indian Express said, "The idea was to bring back the old world charm of the place. Once the project is complete, plan is to make these streets exclusive to pedestrians."
Jaydeep More, assistant municipal commissioner, said, "Our plan is to upgrade and beautify five internal streets at Kala Ghoda to make them pedestrian-friendly. We have already floated the tenders to appoint the consultant who will execute the designs."
In this project, five internal streets, including Forbes Street, Rope Walk Lane, Saibaba Road, Rutherfield Street and B Bharucha Road will be beautified. The officials also said that they are working on the parking aspect and are looking for an alternate space.&nbsp;

No Devanagari signboards: BMC warns shops, hotels in Mumbai, cites SC order

The BMC in a statement said although the Supreme Court had ordered to put up boards with Devnagri script by November 28, the civic body said it will start taking action fron Tuesday.&nbsp;

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will start taking action from Tuesday against shops, hotels and other commercial establishments failing to put up signboards with names in Devanagari script, it said in a statement here.
BMC administrator I S Chahal held a meeting and asked the officials to ensure implementation of the Supreme Court's directive that the names of shops, institutes and hotels must be in Devanagari script (beside any other script), it said.
The apex court had given time to put up Devanagari boards by November 25, but the civic body will initiate action from November 28, the statement said.

The removal of unauthorised construction at Union minister Narayan Rane's bungalow in Mumbai's Juhu area started on Thursday, a civic official confirmed.
The Supreme Court had in September dismissed a plea challenging the Bombay High Court verdict that directed the Mumbai civic body to demolish the unauthorised construction at Rane's bungalow 'Adhish', noting there was a violation of the Floor Space Index and Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) rules.
The floor space index (FSI) is the maximum permissible floor area that can be built on a particular plot or/piece of land.
The plea against the high court judgement was filed in the apex court by Kaalkaa Real Estates Pvt Ltd, a company owned by Rane's family.
Talking to PTI on Thursday, a senior Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation official said, &ldquo;The Supreme Court has directed Rane to remove the illegal construction at his bungalow in two months. If he fails to do so, the BMC will act.&rdquo; Activist Santosh Daundkar, who had filed complaints against Rane's bungalow, welcomed the development but said his complaint about the CRZ rules violation was still pending.
"I suspect the BMC's action is only about illegal construction in the bungalow, but no action is being taken on the CRZ rules violations. Such an action is more severe than what is currently taking place at Rane's bungalow," he said.

There is no immediate need for imposing lockdown or additional restrictions in Mumbai as the bed occupancy rate, oxygen requirement and number of COVID-19 deaths are low, municipal commissioner Iqbal Chahal said on Friday.
During the first and second wave the decision to impose lockdown was taken on the basis of case positivity rate, but this criterion cannot be applied for the third wave which started from December 21, 2021, Chahal told a Marathi news channel.
No further restrictions were needed to be imposed on travel by local trains as only fully vaccinated people are being allowed to board the trains, he said.
“The criterion in the first and second wave was the positivity rate. But in this wave of Omicron variant of the virus, two new criteria should be occupancy of hospital beds and oxygen requirement,” Chahal said.
The administration has so far imposed only a few restrictions such as ban on assembly of five or more persons during night time and shutting of schools in the city, he said.
Of over 20,000 people who tested positive for coronavirus in Mumbai on Thursday, only 1,180 were hospitalised and 110 were on oxygen support, the BMC chief said.
As many as 5,900 out of 35,000 hospital beds are occupied at present, he said.
“At least 83 per cent beds are currently vacant and oxygen requirement is not even 10 per cent. During the second wave, we used 235 MT oxygen (per day). Considering these factors, there is no need for lockdown in the current situation,” Chahal said.
“Lockdown cannot be imposed only on the basis of numbers (COVID-19 cases). It depends on how many beds are vacant in our hospitals, how much oxygen is required and how many deaths are taking place. These are more important,” he added.
He conceded that since December 21 last year the positivity rate has gone up significantly.
But in the last 16 days, the city recorded only 17 deaths. Active cases have crossed one lakh, but the death rate is only one per day, he said.
“We are keeping a close eye on the situation. I personally review things three to four times a day,” the commissioner said.
Only unvaccinated Omicron patients are seen to be requiring oxygen support, he noted.
The civic body chief, however, warned against complacency.
Omicron infection is not like flu but it is a virus, he said, urging people to follow COVID-19 appropriate behaviour and use masks.
When a person tests positive using a self-testing kit, the information gets updated on the ICMR’s website and through it, the BMC gets information, Chahal said.
On Thursday, 3,800 people in Mumbai used self-testing kits and 288 of them came out positive. This number was included in the daily tally, he said, adding that the civic body too has ramped up testing from 40,000 to 70,000 samples per day.

A rapid RT-PCR test will be mandatory for all international passengers arriving at the Mumbai airport. If anyone is found positive, a normal RT-PCR test will be done. As per the civic body's latest order, all international passengers arriving in Mumbai, irrespective of whether they departed from an at-risk country or not, "will be asked to take rapid RT PCR test".
Maharashtra reported 18,466 new COVID cases in the last 24 hours, the state health department informed on Tuesday. The cases of the Omicron variant of coronavirus have gone up to 653.

As per the latest update from the Mumbai&nbsp;municipal body&nbsp;rapid RT-PCR test will be conducted for all traveling from overseas. In Maximum city, the law panel of civic body BMC, has passed a ruling which calls for cancellation of shop licenses if the owners don’t remove illegal lingerie mannequins. Claiming that women know where to buy lingerie and that there is no need to advertise, Shiv Sena leader and the head of BMC’s law panel there are places in the city where mannequin busts are hanging on tree branches with lingerie. In 2013, Sena corporator Ritu Tawde had demanded the removal of mannequins at lingerie shops in the city.
