Our beloved biryani has again topped the list of food orders online. According to the food delivery platform, Biryani was the most ordered dish on Swiggy in 2023 for the eighth consecutive year.
In 2023, India ordered 2.5 biryanis every second. And, for every 5.5 chicken biryanis, there was one veg biryani ordered.
The report also pointed out that the most orders came from user accounts in Chennai, Delhi and Hyderabad, with each placing over 10,000 orders. And, on the day of the World Cup 2023 finals, on November 19, India ordered 188 pizzas per minute.
According to the "How India Swiggy'd 2023 - unwrapping India's year in on-demand convenience" report, analyzing order data from January 1 to November 23, 2.49 million customers made their Swiggy debut with a biryani order.
Hyderabad emerged as the city with the highest biryani appetite, with every sixth biryani delivered in this city.
During Durga Pujo, Gulab Jamuns overtook Roshogollas with over 7.7 million orders. Masala Dosa was the top favourite in vegetarian orders for all nine days of Navaratri.

A consumer food company&rsquo;s flagship brand Daawat Basmati Rice has created a unique occasion for Biryani lovers across the world by celebrating Biryani Day across the globe on the 1st Sunday of every July, and this year it falls on July 2.
The word Biryani is derived from the Persian word Birian, which means &lsquo;fried before cooking&rsquo; and Birinj means rice.&nbsp;
<h3>Origin of Biryani</h3>
There are various theories related to the origin of this scrumptious dish. Many historians believe that biryani originated from Persia and was brought to India by the Mughals, and was further developed in the Mughal royal kitchen.
However, there is one popular story related to Mumtaz Mahal, wife of Mughal ruler Shah Jahan. It is believed that when Mumtaz visited the army barracks, she found the Mughal soldiers weak and malnourished. So, she ordered the chefs to cook a dish with meat and rice to provide a balanced diet to the soldiers. The dish was prepared with spices and saffron and cooked over a wood fire and turned out to be delicious. And that's how our favourite biryani was born.

Kolkata Biryani
After being banished by the British, Nawab Wajid Ali Shah recreated Biryani in the city of Calcutta. As they were unable to afford meat, it was replaced with perfectly cooked golden brown potatoes. Kolkata Biryani is made by using a yoghurt-based marinade for the meat, which is cooked separately from the light yellow rice.&nbsp;
Lucknow Biryani
Lucknow Biryani is also known as 'pukki' Biryani or Awadhi Biryani. One of the distinguishing features of Lucknow Biryani is the 'Dum Pukht' cooking method. In this technique, the meat and partially cooked rice are layered in a handi or a heavy-bottomed pot, which is then sealed with dough or cloth to trap the steam. The biryani is then slow-cooked on a low flame or in an oven, allowing the flavours to meld together and the meat to become tender and succulent.
Mughlai Biryani
The Mughal Emperors were very fond of lavish dining experiences and appreciated the art of cooking. Mughlai Biryani is typically prepared using the 'Dum Pukht' method, where the biryani is slow-cooked in a sealed pot to allow the ingredients to steam and blend together.
Hyderabadi Biryani
Hyderabadi Biryani has gained worldwide recognition and is considered a culinary delight. The famous Hyderabadi Biryani came into being after Emperor Aurangzeb appointed Niza-Ul-Mulk as the new ruler of Hyderabad. It is believed that his chefs created almost 50 different versions that used fish, shrimp, quail, deer, and even hare meat.

In another suspected case of food poisoning, a 20-year old woman has died after allegedly consuming 'Kuzhimanthi' - a biryani dish in Kerala from a local hotel.
Police said Anju Sreeparvathy from Perumbala near Kasaragod, had eaten 'Kuzhimanthi' which she purchased online from a restaurant named Romansia at Kasaragod on December 31 and was undergoing treatment since then.
"A case has been registered after her parents filed the complaint. The girl died early Saturday morning," police told Press Trust of India, adding that further action will be taken based on the forensic report.
The girl was undergoing treatment at a private hospital, from where she was taken to another hospital at Mangaluru in Karnataka, where she died.

Meanwhile, state Health Minister Veena George, ordered a probe into the incident.
"Directions have been issued to the Food Safety Commissioner to file a report with regard to the incident. The DMO is also looking into the incident and the treatment given to the girl," Ms George told reporters at Pathanamthitta.
She said the licence of the hotels which are accused of food poisoning, will be cancelled under the Food Safety and Standards Act (FSSA).
Earlier this week, a nurse in Kottayam Medical College died allegedly after consuming food from an eatery in Kozhikode.

To add literature to the batter, Nadella asked the software to make the dialogue, a part of a Shakespearean play!
