President Droupadi Murmu on Saturday conferred Bharat Ratna, the country's highest civilian honour, on former prime ministers P V Narasimha Rao and Chaudhary Charan Singh, agriculture scientist M S Swaminathan and two-time former Bihar chief minister Karpoori Thakur, posthumously at a ceremony held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan here.
The awards to Rao, Singh, Thakur and Swaminathan were received by their kin.
P V Prabhakar Rao, son of former prime minister Rao, received the award conferred on his father from the president.
Jayant Chaudhary, Singh's grandson and the president of the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), accepted the honour from Murmu.
Swaminathan's daughter Nitya Rao and Thakur's son Ram Nath Thakur received the award from the president.
Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other dignitaries were present at the ceremony.
The government announced five Bharat Ratna awards this year, including one to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) stalwart and former deputy prime minister L K Advani.&nbsp;

The Nationalist Congress Party-Sharadchandra Pawar has claimed the Narendra Modi government bestowed the Bharat Ratna on eminent agricultural scientist late Dr MS Swaminathan to divert attention from its anti-farmer stance.
One of the main demands of the farm outfits protesting currently is the implementation of the Minimum Support Price (MSP) mechanism based on the formula of Swaminathan but the Centre was unwilling to implement it, NCP's Sharad Pawar faction national spokesperson Clyde Crasto said on Sunday.
"It is more than two weeks since the current farmers' protest started. The farmers have been stopped by the government from entering Delhi and placing their demands. They protested in 2020-21 too and after many lives were lost, the government took back the three farm laws as demanded by the farmers," Crasto said in a statement.
The Union government's move to give Bharat Ratna, the country's highest civilian award, to Swaminathan was to divert the attention from its anti-farmer stance, he claimed.
If the BJP truly believes in the move to give the Bharat Ratna to Swaminathan, then it should also implement his MSP formula for the welfare of farmers, Crasto added.

The Indian government on Friday decided to award the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award, to former prime ministers Narasimha Rao and Charan Singh and scientist MS Swaminathan.&nbsp;
Known as 'Father of India's Green Revolution', MS Swaminathan played an important role in helping the country achieve self-reliance in agriculture and made outstanding efforts in modernising it.&nbsp;
The decision to honour to him was welcomed by his daughter Dr Soumya Swaminathan who said that while her father would have been happy with the recognition, he never worked for awards.
Former Chief Scientist and former Deputy Director General at the WHO, Dr Soumya Swaminathan told reporters here that she was "proud and happy" that her father's work has been recognised with the highest civilian honour in the country.
At the same time, she also said that it was the farmers' love for him that meant a lot to him.
She also said that the government's decision, apart from making her father's family, friends, students and well wishers happy, "will also send a very strong message to the youth of the country that you can use science and technology to benefit the society".
Stating that her father has been recognised for his lifetime of contributions to agriculture, but more importantly to farmers' welfare in the country and also to the welfare of the poorest in society and the most vulnerable, she said it was a matter of "pride and satisfaction" that her father's whole life's work has been recognised by the Government of India and the Prime Minister.
"I am sure that he would have also been happy if the news had come during his lifetime. But he was never somebody who worked for awards or waited for recognition.
"Lot of awards and recognition came to him, but he was motivated more by the results of what he did on the ground and the people's love and affection," Dr Swaminathan said.
She said that her father always used to remember the farmers he met wherever he went in India.
Swaminathan, who died last year on September 28 at age 98, is most widely known for transforming India from a drought-stricken country dependent on the United States for foodgrain imports in the 1960s to being declared self-sufficient in food production in 1971.
His efforts involved introducing high-yielding genetic varieties of rice and wheat in India and the subcontinent, alongside American agronomist Norman Borlaug. Swaminathan was awarded the first World Food prize in 1987 for his work.

While making the announcement, he said that MS Swaminathan, often known as the father of the Green Revolution, would also be feted with the highest civilian award.
The government had earlier announced the country's highest civilian honour for L K Advani and Karpoori Thakur. "Narasimha Rao steered India through critical transformations and also enriched its cultural and intellectual heritage," Modi said on X.
Rao's visionary leadership, Modi said, was instrumental in making India economically advanced and laid a solid foundation for its prosperity, growth.
"Bharat Ratna to Charan Singh dedicated to his incomparable contribution to country," the prime minister said.
"Swaminathan made monumental contributions to country in agriculture and farmers&rsquo; welfare," Modi said.
He played a pivotal role in helping India achieve self-reliance in agriculture and made outstanding efforts in modernising it, the prime minister said.&nbsp;
Chaudhary Charan Singh, who was widely referred to as the Champion of India's peasants, served as the fifth PM of India.
Whereas Rao, who was instrumental in liberalising India's economy, served as the ninth prime minister of India.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Two-time Bihar chief minister Karpoori Thakur has been named for the country's highest civilian award Bharat Ratna posthumously, a Rashtrapati Bhawan communique said on Tuesday on the eve of the birth centenary of the fountainhead of OBC politics in Bihar.
Thakur, who passed away in 1988, was the first non-Congress socialist leader who became chief minister twice -- first for seven months in December 1970 and later for two years in 1977.
"The President has been pleased to award Bharat Ratna to Shri Karpoori Thakur (posthumously)," the communique said.
Thakur, known affectionately as 'Jan Nayak' (people's leader), is the 49th recipient of the country's highest civilian award. The award was last conferred on late president Pranab Mukherjee in 2019.
Born on January 24, 1924 in Nai samaj (barber society), Thakur is credited in Bihar politics for enforcing total prohibition of alcohol in 1970. The village where he was born in Samistupur district was renamed after him as Karpuri Gram.
Thakur abandoned college education for the Indian freedom struggle and was arrested between 1942 and 1945 for participating in the Quit India Movement.
He was inspired by heavyweights like Ram Manohar Lohia who spearheaded the socialist movement in post-Independent India. He was also close to Jayaprakash Narayan.
Thakur's tenure as chief minister is best remembered for implementation of the recommendations of the Mungeri Lal Commission, whereby quotas for backward classes were introduced in the state. This panel was a forerunner of the Mandal Commission.
A highlight of the Mungeri Lal Commission was a separate sub-category called Most Backward Classes, which provided the template for the 'ati pichhda' plank built by Nitish Kumar years later.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said this recognition is a testament to the socialist leader's enduring efforts as a champion for the marginalised and a stalwart of equality.
In a post on X, Modi said, "His unwavering commitment to uplift the downtrodden and his visionary leadership have left an indelible mark on India's socio-political fabric. This award not only honours his remarkable contributions but also inspires us to continue his mission of creating a more just and equitable society." Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar hailed the announcement and said it was a "fulfilment of an age old demand" by his party JD(U) that will "send a positive message among deprived sections of the society".
Officials said the Bharat Ratna is a significant recognition of a remarkable leader who was a stalwart of social justice and an inspiring figure in Indian politics.
This award is a tribute to Thakur's lifelong dedication to the uplift of the underprivileged sections of society and his relentless fight for social justice.
His simplicity in his personal conduct was highly inspiring and contribution to Indian politics has been monumental, the officials said.
Being born in one of the most backward sections of society, Thakur was a remarkable leader whose political journey was marked by his unwavering commitment to the marginalised sections of society.
He was a key figure in the struggle against social discrimination and inequality and his commitment to affirmative action gave representation and opportunities to the poor, oppressed, exploited and deprived sections of the country, the officials said.
During his career, his policies and reforms were pioneering in bringing about significant changes in the lives of many, especially in the fields of education, employment and farmer welfare.
By honouring Thakur, the government recognises his role as a symbol of democracy and social justice and also acknowledges his deep impact as a motivating figure for the marginalised sections of society, the officials said.
His life and work embody the spirit of the Constitution, which advocates for equality, fraternity, and justice for all.
The officials said the award is not only a recognition of Thakur's past achievements but also serves as an inspiration for future generations.
"It is a reminder of the values that Thakur stood for - simplicity, inclusiveness, and the tireless pursuit of social justice," an official said.
Thakur was first elected to Bihar assembly in 1952 where he continued until his death in 1988.

The highlight of his tenure was providing reservations for the backward classes in government jobs, a move that would eventually set the tone for the Mandal Commission report in 1990.

As hundred of doctors have lost their lives while serving in hospitals amid the Covid-19 pandemic, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking that the country&rsquo;s highest civilian award,&nbsp;Bharat Ratna should be given this year to all doctors, nurses and paramedics.&nbsp;
In the letter, Kejriwal said many doctors and nurses sacrificed their lives fighting Corona. If we honour them with Bharat Ratna, then it will be a true tribute to them.&nbsp;
Lakhs of doctors and nurses served people selflessly without worrying about their lives and families. There can be no other better way (than honouring them with Bharat Ratna) to thank and honour them, the Delhi CM wrote in the letter in Hindi.
According to data made available by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) in mid-June, 730 doctors have died to coronavirus infection during the second wave.&nbsp;

The editorial also pointed out that the Mumbai film industry provides jobs to lakhs of people.
Referring to the criticism that it is dominated by the "Khans", the newspaper said at one time the industry was dominated by Punjabis and Maharashtrians.
Many Muslim actors adopted Hindu screen names such as Dilip Kumar (whose real name is Yusuf Khan), Madhubala (Mumtaz Jehan Begum Dehlavi), it said, adding that what mattered was only talent and not the person's religion.
While talented members of Bollywood dynasties such as Kapoors, Roshans, Dutts, Shantarams survived, actors like Rajesh Khanna, Jitendra, Dharmendradid not have any film family background, the editorial said.
"What is the problem if their children and grand- children take forward their legacy," the Sena mouthpiece asked, in apparent counter to Ranaut's tirade against nepotism in the film industry.
Dynasties or `gharanas' exist in the fields of music and direction too, it added.
"These people did not fight the fish while living in a pond" (did not fight the milieu in which they lived)" and "did not throw stones at others while living in a glass house," the editorial said, in a veiled reference toRanaut who has criticized bigwigs in the film industry.&nbsp;
