A panel of India&rsquo;s educational body NCERT has voted to recommend changing &lsquo;India&rsquo; to &lsquo;Bharat&rsquo; in school textbooks.

A panel of India&rsquo;s educational body NCERT has voted to recommend changing &lsquo;India&rsquo; to &lsquo;Bharat&rsquo; in school textbooks. Seven members voted unanimously for the recommendation.
Committee chairman CI Issac said &lsquo;Bharat is an age-old name,&rsquo; and invoked the Indian constitution&rsquo;s article 1. Apart from this, the body also decided to introduce the Indian Knowledge System in the curriculum for all subjects.
Issac said the name &lsquo;Bharat&rsquo; has been mentioned in ancient Hindu texts and scriptures like Vishnu Purana, which is believed to be 7,000 years old.
&ldquo;The term India started being used commonly only after the establishment of the East India Company and the battle of Plassey in 1757,&rdquo; he said, as per Hindustan Times.
Other changes suggested by the NCERT committee included the introduction of &lsquo;classical history&rsquo; and replacing it with &lsquo;ancient history&rsquo; in the textbook. Students will also be taught about &lsquo;Hindu victories.&rsquo;
&ldquo;Our failures are presently mentioned in the textbooks. But our victories over the Mughals and Sultans are not,&rdquo; Issac said, as per Hindustan Times.

Hitting out at the govt, Jha said, "...Ever since the birth of the INDIA alliance, several reactions have been coming from BJP leaders...They are not able to figure out how to attack the INDIA alliance...I believe this is a hysterical reaction. Now NCERT is doing this. What will you do with Article 1 which says India that is Bharat. I am not able to understand the meaning of any of this...If the INDIA alliance changes its name to Bharat, then what will they do?...."

As New Delhi prepares to host the G20 Summit on September 9 and 10, an invitation from President Droupadi Murmu to heads of state under the title 'President of Bharat' instead of 'President of India' has stirred controversy.
Subsequent reports have suggested that the government may introduce a bill to rename the country 'Bharat' during the special session of Parliament scheduled between September 18 and 22.
However, the process of changing the country's name entails more than parliamentary approval; it also involves expenses related to rebranding and marketing.
To estimate the cost of renaming India to Bharat, Outlook magazine referenced a model created by South Africa-based intellectual property lawyer and blogger Darren Olivier. This model draws parallels between renaming a nation and large-scale rebranding efforts undertaken by corporations.
According to the model, the average marketing cost for a major enterprise typically accounts for around 6% of its total revenue, with rebranding costs potentially consuming up to 10% of the overall marketing budget.
In India's case, its total receipts for the fiscal year 2022-23 amounted to Rs 23.84 trillion. According to Olivier's model, renaming the country to Bharat could cost approximately Rs 14,034 crore.
Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has expressed concerns about abandoning the name 'India,' which holds an 'incalculable' brand value. He emphasized that while there is no constitutional impediment to using 'Bharat,' one of the country's official names, he hopes the government will retain 'India' alongside it. Tharoor believes that both names should continue to be used, as 'India' carries significant historical and global recognition.

The G20 invite sparked a debate on the country's name.
It was some opposition leaders, including Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh, who first highlighted the development and accused the government of assaulting the idea of the country being a "Union of States", as mentioned in the Constitution which describes the country as "India, that is Bharat".
Union ministers Dharmendra Pradhan and Giriraj Singh later posted on X pictures of their invites.
Sharing a picture of his invite, Pradhan used the hashtag '#PresidentOfBharat' and said, "Jana Gana Mana Adhinayak Jaya He, Bharat Bhagya Vidhata".
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, "Republic of Bharat- happy and proud that our civilisation is marching ahead boldly towards Amrit Kaal." Rejecting the opposition's criticism, he said, "The name Bharat is mentioned in the Constitution and the country has been known by it for thousands of years. Our country was Bharat, is Bharat and will remain Bharat." "In this Amrit Kaal people want that their country's name should be known as Bharat. Why should it have an English name. What is the problem of the Congress? 'India' word was used by British. The original name is Bharat," Sarma said.
Their own prince, he said, in a sarcastic reference to Rahul Gandhi, named his foot-march as "Bharat Jodo Yatra".
Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar said that "our country is Bharat and there should be no doubt about this". The Congress has a problem with everything, he said.
Asked if the government is planning to do away with 'India' as the country's name during the coming special session of Parliament, he said he cannot react to speculation.

As speculations of India being renamed to Bharat are doing the rounds, Virender Sehwag is in favour of it happening sooner rather than later.
The former India captain even urged the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and secretary Jay Shah to ensure that Team India players have 'Bharat' on their chests at the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023.
'I have always believed a name should be one which instils pride in us. We are Bhartiyas. India is a name given by the British and it has been long overdue to get our original name &lsquo;Bharat&rsquo; back officially,' Sehwag wrote.

Singer Sona Mohapatra, in a recent interview with ETimes, recalled how she received rape threats after she slammed actor Salman Khan for criticising Priyanka Chopra for exiting his film, 'Bharat.' 
In 2019, Salman made a derogatory comment on Priyanka, saying she quit the 'biggest film of her career' to marry singer-actor Nick Jonas while people usually leave their husbands to grab such an opportunity. The singer earlier criticised the actor for his statement where he compared himself to a 'raped' woman while talking about the exhausting shoot of 'Sultan.' Sona slammed Salman once again after he requested his fans to support Sushant Singh Rajput's fans and family.
