The director general of the BBC announced his resignation Sunday following a row over the editing of a documentary about Donald Trump as the US president attacked "corrupt journalists".
Tim Davie and the broadcaster's head of news, Deborah Turness, resigned after accusations that a documentary by its flagship Panorama programme had edited a speech by Trump in a misleading way.
Reacting to the news, Trump said "corrupt journalists" had been exposed, adding "these are very dishonest people who tried to step on the scales of a Presidential Election".
Announcing his resignation Davie said in a statement posted on the BBC website: "Like all public organisations, the BBC is not perfect, and we must always be open, transparent and accountable.
"While not being the only reason, the current debate around BBC News has understandably contributed to my decision... I have to take ultimate responsibility."
The latest controversy follows a Daily Telegraph report this week that said concerns were first raised in the summer in a memo on impartiality by Michael Prescott, a former external adviser to the BBC's editorial standards committee.
Earlier Sunday, the UK Culture, Media and Sport Minister Lisa Nandy called the allegations "incredibly serious".
The BBC has promised "a full response" to parliament's culture media and sport committee on Monday.

The criticism emerged over clips spliced together from sections of a Trump speech on January 6, 2021, when he was accused of fomenting the mob attack on the US Capitol seeking to keep him in power despite losing his re-election bid.
The edit made it appear he had told supporters he was going to walk to the US Capitol with them and "fight like hell".
In the undoctored clip, however, the president urged the audience to walk with him "and we're going to cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women".
At the time, Trump was still disputing President Joe Biden's election victory, in a vote that saw him ousted after his first term in office.
The edit was included in a documentary entitled "Trump: A Second Chance?" that was broadcast by the BBC the week before last year's US election.
 - 'Bias' allegation -
Nandy had said earlier Sunday that the Trump edit was one of several concerns about editorial standards at the BBC.
"It isn't just about the Panorama programme, although that is incredibly serious," she told BBC television in an interview.
"There are a series of very serious allegations made, the most serious of which is that there is systemic bias in the way that difficult issues are reported at the BBC," she said.
Nandy said she was concerned about a tendency for editorial standards and the language used in reports to be "entirely inconsistent" whether it be on "Israel, Gaza... trans people or on this issue about President Trump".
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt seemed to rejoice over the news, posting on X a screen-shot of the BBC news site announcing the resignation.
Leavitt was previously quoted by the Telegraph condemning "this purposefully dishonestly, selectively edited clip by the BBC".
The BBC is funded by a licence fee paid by anyone who watches live TV in the UK.
Earlier this year, it issued several apologies for "serious flaws" in the making of another documentary entitled "Gaza: How To Survive A Warzone", broadcast in February.
In October it accepted a sanction from the UK media watchdog for what was deemed a "materially misleading" programme, whose child narrator was later revealed to be the son of Hamas's former deputy agriculture minister.

As per a report by Reuters, "The regulations that govern publishing the news in India have changed," BBC's deputy CEO Jonathan Munro told staff in an email. "The changes mean that any company publishing digital news content in India, must be majority-owned by Indian nationals," he added.&nbsp;
The move will see the departure of approximately 250 staff members, aligning with the Foreign Direct Investment law in India. The Collective Newsroom will focus on delivering a wide range of services commissioned by the BBC across India.
BBC's commissioning of Collective Newsroom involves the production of six Indian language services (Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu and Punjabi), Indian digital content, and an English-language YouTube channel targeted at global audiences.
BBC Monitoring and the BBC&rsquo;s English language newsgathering operation for global output will continue within the BBC, while the departing staff for Collective Newsroom includes Rupa Jha, Mukesh Sharma, Sanjoy Majumder, and Sara Hassan.

Four women have alleged sexual assaults between 2006 and 2013 when Brand was at the height of his fame working as a presenter for BBC Radio 2, Channel 4 and acting in Hollywood movies, a joint media investigation said Saturday.
The broadcasters BBC and Channel 4, along with the production company Banijay UK, said Sunday that they would open internal inquiries into the claims.
"We are urgently looking into the issues raised," a BBC spokesperson told AFP.
The allegations were made in a joint investigation by The Sunday Times, the Times and Channel 4 Dispatches.
"Banijay UK has launched an urgent internal investigation and will cooperate with any requests for information from broadcast partners and external agencies," the production firm said.
According to the Times investigation, several women have made a range of accusations about Brand's alleged controlling, abusive and predatory behaviour.
In a video released Friday, Brand denied the "very serious criminal allegations".
He said he had received letters from a TV company and a newspaper listing "a litany of extremely egregious and aggressive attacks".
"Amidst this litany of astonishing rather baroque attacks are some very serious allegations that I absolutely refute," he said in the video clip posted online.
According to the media reports, one woman alleged that Brand raped her in his Los Angeles home, while another claims he assaulted her during a three-month relationship while she was 16 and still at school.
Known internationally as the former husband of pop star Katy Perry, Brand began his career as a stand-up comedian in the early 2000s.
He was the host of the chat show Big Brother's Big Mouth, a spin-off of the popular reality series, for three years from 2004.
He also played rock star Aldous Snow in the 2008 film "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" and its 2010 sequel "Get Him To The Greek".
London's Metropolitan Police told AFP that while it was aware of the allegations, "At this time, we have not received any reports in relation to this".
"If anyone believes they have been the victim of a sexual assault, no matter how long ago it happened, we would encourage them to contact police," it said.

The corporation needed to handle them "with the upmost diligence", he added, refusing to comment on calls from some MPs to use parliamentary privilege to name the presenter in the House of Commons.
Parliamentary privilege allows legal immunity to lawmakers for statements made in the chamber.

BBC has reportedly acknowledged that it may have been paying lower taxes in India than its liability, reported Times of India quoting sources. The broadcaster, however, is yet to file revised returns or make a written submission to the I-T department.&nbsp;
As per Hindustan Times, BBC has apparently confessed to paying lower income tax in a mail to the income tax department. The publication cited a source and reported that BBC must take the formal route to comply by filing revised returns and paying all dues, penalty and interests, which runs in several crores. Hindustan Times also mentioned that the mail acknowledged that the company had underreported some ₹40 crore of income in its tax returns.
The Income Tax department surveyed its offices at Delhi and Mumbai in February for three staright days. The Income Tax department on 17th February had said that during the course of operations, evidence indicated that tax was not been paid on certain remittances. The group's foreign entities had not disclosed the remittances as income in India. A survey is an exercise of checking books and other documents.
While the income tax officials were surveying the BBC offices in February, the broadcaster had said that it was &ldquo;fully cooperating&rdquo; with the authorities and it hoped to have this situation resolved as soon as possible.&nbsp;
The BBC has so far not issued any official comment or statement in response to this.

A week ago, Sunak lost his deputy prime minister, Dominic Raab, who was forced out after another inquiry found him guilty of bullying civil servants.
Sharp was formerly Sunak's boss at investment bank Goldman Sachs and is a wealthy past donor to the ruling Conservatives.
The chairman of the British Broadcasting Corporation is appointed by the UK monarch on the advice of the government.
Sharp's appointment by Johnson was criticised at the time for cronyism by a government that was said to be keen to rein in perceived critical reporting by the BBC.
Sharp "failed to disclose potential perceived conflicts of interest" to a committee of MPs who were vetting his appointment by Johnson in early 2021, the inquiry by a senior lawyer found.
"There is a risk of a perception that Mr Sharp was recommended for appointment because he assisted... the former prime minister in a private financial matter," lawyer Adam Heppinstall found.
In February, the same committee of MPs accused Sharp of "significant errors of judgement" for not disclosing his involvement in the loan.
While he was being considered for the BBC job, Sharp in late 2020 put Johnson in contact with a distant cousin of the prime minister who extended him a credit facility of &pound;800,000 ($1 million).
Sharp has denied he got the job as a quid pro quo for helping out the cash-strapped Johnson, but announced his resignation hard on the heels of Heppinstall presenting his report to Sunak's government.
He acknowledged breaching conflict-of-interest rules for top UK officials, but said it was "inadvertent and not material" to his appointment to the BBC.
"Nevertheless, I have decided that it is right to prioritise the interests of the BBC," he said in a statement, confirming he would step down at the end of June to give time for a new chair to be found.
"I feel that this matter may well be a distraction from the Corporation's good work were I to remain in post until the end of my term."

"Impartiality is important to the BBC. That is a difficult balancing act to get right where people are subject to different contracts and on air positions, and with different audience and social media profiles," he said.
An independent review into the guidance will be conducted, including how it applies to freelancers such as Lineker, he added.

In an email to BBC staff in India reported on Thursday by the broadcaster, Director General Tim Davie thanked them for their courage as he stressed that nothing was more important than reporting impartially. He added that the BBC would help staff in India do their jobs effectively and safely.
"Nothing is more important than our ability to report without fear or favour,&rdquo; Davie said in the email, reported by the BBC.
"Our duty to our audiences around the world is to pursue the facts through independent and impartial journalism, and to produce and distribute the very best creative content. We won't be put off from that task. I'd like to be clear: the BBC does not have an agenda &ndash; we are driven by purpose. And our first public purpose is to provide impartial news and information to help people understand and engage with the world around them," he said.
The income tax survey came weeks after the London-headquartered public broadcaster aired a controversial two-part documentary in the UK, &lsquo;India: The Modi Question&rsquo;, referencing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the 2002 Gujarat riots.
The email from Davie came a week after I-T officials spent three days carrying out what they called a "survey" at the BBC offices. In an official statement at the end of the searches, the BBC said that it will "continue to cooperate" with the authorities and hopes matters are resolved as soon as possible.
In its statement following the survey, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) said it had found discrepancies and that the income and profits disclosed by the organisation's units were "not commensurate with the scale of operations in India".
Earlier this week, the British government strongly defended the BBC and its editorial freedom in Parliament to say: "We stand up for the BBC. We fund the BBC. We think the BBC World Service is vital." David Rutley, a UK Foreign Office minister, was responding to an urgent question raised in the House of Commons by the Opposition parties, some of whom branded the action a "deliberate act of intimidation following the release of an unflattering documentary about the country's leader" and sharply criticised the UK government for failing to make a statement on the issue sooner.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) issued a statement without naming the media organisation and said that I-T teams unearthed crucial evidences by way of statement of employees, digital proof and documents.

While the scope of 'survey' is limited to the inspection of books and verification of cash &amp; inventory, during a 'search' officials can inspect entire premises to unravel undisclosed assets.
Moreover, officials can seize any books of accounts, documents or other valuable items during a search while on the other hand, approval from a senior officer is required to retain such books during a survey for more than 15 days.
