Union Minister Shobha Karandlaje, known for her affiliation with Hindutva politics, is set to contest against Congress' MV Rajeev Gowda, former professor of IIM, Bangalore.
Karandlaje replaces incumbent two-time MP Sadanand Gowda on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket. She brings both experience and controversy to the electoral field. She started her political career with the RSS and went on to win the Udupi-Chikmagalur Lok Sabha constituency in 2014 and 2019. Karandlaje is the Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare, and Food Processing Industries in the Modi cabinet.&nbsp;
She recently sparked controversy by accusing the people of Tamil Nadu for Bengaluru&rsquo;s Rameshwaram Cafe blast that injured at least 10 people. The Election Commission directed the Karnataka Chief Electoral officer to take action against her for violating the Model Code of Conduct, based on DMK&rsquo;s complaint.
In contrast, MV Rajeev Gowda succeeds Krishna Byre Gowda as the Congress' candidate from Bangalore North. He is the son of late MV Venkatappa, who held the positions of Legislative Assembly Speaker and Chairman of the legislative council in Karnataka. Rajeev finished his higher studies in the United States and later returned to teach at IIM, Bangalore.&nbsp;

Karnataka Police detained several protesters, including Karnataka Rakshna Vedike President T.A. Narayana Gowda, following their demonstration for 60% Kannada on all Bengaluru signboards, which later escalated into vandalism.
Protesters defaced, spray-painted, and removed city signboards. They also vandalised the signboard of the multi-city hotel chain Bloom and entered the premises, chanting pro-Kannada slogans.&nbsp;
The group had initially set a December 27 deadline for the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to enforce the 60% Kannada rule. Under pressure, the BBMP has now extended the deadline to February 28.&nbsp;

The Bengaluru civic body on Friday ordered closure of meat stalls, non-vegetarian hotels and restaurants from January 30 till February 20, in view of the Aero India Show.
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) in its public notice said that there will be prohibition on serving and sale of non-vegetarian dishes within 10 km of the Yelahanka Air Force Station.
The Aero India Show will be conducted from February 13 to 17.
The BBMP said, "It is to the notice of general public and proprietors of meat stalls, non-vegetarian hotels and restaurants for closure of all meat/chicken/fish shops and prohibition of serving/sale of non-vegetarian dishes within 10 km radius of Air Force Station, Yelahanka from January 30 to February 20".
Any violation of this will attract punishment under the BBMP Act-2020 and the rule 91 of the Indian Aircraft Rules 1937, it said.
According to the BBMP officials, the decision was taken as the non-veg food littered in public places attract lots of scavenger birds, especially kites, which can cause mid air mishaps.
Aero India in its website stated that a total of 731 exhibitors have registered -- 633 Indian and 98 foreign -- for the airshow.
According to officials, Aero India has carved a niche for itself globally as one of the premier aerospace exhibitions with 13 successful editions organised in Bengaluru since 1996.

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore has been ranked as the world&rsquo;s top research university ahead of the likes of Princeton and Harvard. IISc Bangalore has scored a perfect 100 on 100 on the metric of citations per faculty (CPF) indicator.
QS World University Rankings 2022, which was released on Wednesday, has been done among 13,000 varsities, 145 more than in last year&rsquo;s edition, from across 197 locations this year.
IIT-Guwahati too emerged as a top research institution from India, being ranked 41st for CPF among the top 50 globally. The results accounted for the distribution and performance of 14.7 million academic papers published between 2015 and 2019, and the 96 million citations received by those papers.

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore has been ranked as the world&rsquo;s top research university ahead of the likes of Princeton and Harvard. IISc Bangalore has scored a perfect 100 on 100 on the metric of citations per faculty (CPF) indicator.
QS World University Rankings 2022, which was released on Wednesday, has been done among 13,000 varsities, 145 more than in last year&rsquo;s edition, from across 197 locations this year.
IIT-Guwahati too emerged as a top research institution from India, being ranked 41st for CPF among the top 50 globally. The results accounted for the distribution and performance of 14.7 million academic papers published between 2015 and 2019, and the 96 million citations received by those papers.
