In a grand show ahead of the Uttar Pradesh elections, BJP President JP Nadda and chief ministers of party ruled states on Wednesday visited Ayodhya for the darshan of Ram Lala.
The CMs of BJP states arrived in the holy town from Varanasi for prayers at the site where Ram Mandir is being constructed.
Chief Ministers from Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Tripura, Gujarat, Haryana and Goa, and two deputy chief ministers from Bihar and one from Arunachal Pradesh were part of the BJP team travelling to Ayodhya.
The chief ministers also offered prayers at the Hanumagarhi Temple.
The chief ministers were earlier in Varanasi on Monday and Tuesday, where they attended the inauguration of the Kashi Vishwanath Dham by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday. They also took part in a conclave of chief ministers with the Prime Minister.

Ancient Egyptians, Romans, Aztecs, Celts- societies, spread across the continents, over centuries have knocked on God’s door to ask for help, to get work done
And if the folktales, the stories and the rumours are to be believed, now and then Gods have answered the door for their favourites
This practice of divine appeasement, for some time now, has been the norm in Uttar Pradesh’s politics
For example, it is without contention, that a place like Ayodhya, the seat of spirituality on the banks of the Saryu river is talked about more for its political importance than theological reasons
Since the 1980s, Ayodhya has remained a pivot in UP politics and polls. For the BJP, since its resolution in 1989 to construct a Ram Mandir at the site of Babri Masjid, Ayodhya remained the focal point of its poll campaigns in the years after the Babri Masjid demolition. It slipped into a footnote in the late 2000s as the law of diminishing returns kicked in
 
But with the Supreme Court ruling in favour of the Ram Mandir in November 2019, Ayodhya has again occupied the pride of place in not just BJP's, but every political party's political scheme of things in the run-up to the UP elections
Almost all parties have used the holy city as a launch pad of sorts for their campaign for the upcoming state polls

Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party, hoping to repeat its 2007 success by harnessing its ‘Dalits-Brahmins’ formula, began its ‘Brahmin Sammelan’ from Ayodhya in July. Party's Brahmin face Satish Chandra Misra started the party’s campaign by offering prayers at the Ram Janmabhoomi
 
The Samajwadi Party too used Ayodhya to launch its campaign with state unit chief Naresh Uttam participating in ‘khet bachaao, rozgaar bachaao‘ event on September 3. Party chief Akhilesh Yadav also said he would visit the temple with his family after its opens for public.
 
The Congress, that never associated itself with the cause of the Ram Mandir, changed its stance after the Supreme Court’s verdict. Ahead of the bhoomi pujan by the PM, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi, called the laying of foundation a "celebration of national unity".

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi began his party’s campaign with a public meeting at Rasulabad in Ayodhya on September 7. The venue was strategically chosen as it is near Dhannipur where a mosque is coming up as per the apex court judgement
 
AAP leaders Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh offered special prayers at the Ram Janmabhoomi and Hanumangarhi temple in Ayodhya as they launched the party's campaign for the 2022 polls
 
It isn’t just Ayodhya though. Political pilgrims have also touched PM’s parliamentary constituency and another holy site Varanasi 
All this worshipping has made the opposition a target for accusations of ‘soft hindutva’
But practising religion is not communalism. Targeting minorities by using religion as a crutch, excluding them from an inclusive national narrative, that fits more into the definition of communalism
Moreover, as long as constitutional morality prevails, asking the Gods for electoral favours does not diminish democratic stoutness
Whether this practice of divine appeasement stems from the abundance of religion in the state, or the abundance is maintained through the practice, is a topic for philosophical debate
But what isn’t a debate, is the obvious political strategy behind the religious stunts
The temple-runs and holy-site hopping is not for the Gods but for the voters
When the political parties ask the voters to vote in the name of their Gods, the voters comply
But if the manifesto promises go kaput, the governance dilapidates or the policies fail - who is to be held accountable?

The Delhi Cabinet on Wednesday approved the inclusion of Ayodhya in its free pilgrimage scheme for the elderly, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced.
Kejriwal had on Tuesday offered prayers at the Ram Janambhoomi site in Ayodhya.
The announcement by Kejriwal comes ahead of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls early next year which his AAP plans to contest.
Under the 'Mukhya Mantri Teerath Yatra Yojna', the Delhi government bears complete expenditure on free pilgrimage of senior citizens to places like Jagganath Puri, Rameshwaram, Shirdi, Mathura, Haridwar, Tirupati among others, he said.
Over 35,000 senior citizens have undertaken pilgrimage under the scheme.
Due to Covid-19, the scheme was halted for the last one-and-a-half years but now instructions have been issued to resume it and the trains for various destinations are expected to be started in the next one month, he said.

On Tuesday,&nbsp;Kejriwal offered prayers at the Ram Janmabhoomi site in Ayodhya and announced that his government's free pilgrimage scheme or 'Tirth&nbsp;Yatra&nbsp;Yojana'&nbsp;will now include the temple town of Ayodhya as well.
He also visited the Hanumangarhi temple in Ayodhya on the second day of his Ayodhya visit.
Ram Mandir&nbsp;at&nbsp;Ayodhya&nbsp;is a big political issue in the next polls as it is the first election since the Supreme Court verdict paved way for the construction of the temple.&nbsp;
As the&nbsp;BJP&nbsp;has left no stone unturned to corner credit for the Ram Mandir, political parties are making&nbsp;a beeline at Ayodhya&nbsp;to be seen as Ram bhakts.&nbsp;
The Aam Aadmi Party, which is the new entrant in the UP battleground, had kicked off its poll campaign in September this year from Ayodhya. The party&nbsp;will contest all 403 assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh.

The Ram Janmabhoomi Trust has said the construction the Ram temple in Ayodhya will meet the deadline and the temple will be open for devotees just before 2024 Lok Sabha polls. The Trust for the first time on Thursday showcased the temple site, where Phase 1 of the construction is almost complete.
The construction at the site, caught in a dispute for decades started after the Supreme Court handed it over for a temple in 2019. The construction which started on August 5 last year with the foundation stone being laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to be ready by December 2023.
The temple complex will include a pilgrim facilitation centre, museum, archives, research centre, auditorium, a cattle shed, a place for rituals, an administrative building and rooms for priests. There are plans to conserve and develop nearby heritage structures like "Kuber Tila" and "Sita Koop" as well.
The Trust, which is overseeing temple construction, had earlier faced allegations of fraud over land acquisition around temple site.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday chaired a key meeting to discuss the Ayodhya development project. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath along with two deputy CMs and other top officials were also present at the virtual meet.
During the virtual meet, UP CM Yogi Adityanath presented a future vision of Ayodhya's development to PM Modi, say reports. This includes modernisation of roads, infrastructure, railway stations, airport and other several pending projects.From developing a green township to a new airport of international standards, the Ayodhya Development Authority is looking to turn the city into a religious tourism destination.
The vision document proposes to construct four main Lord Ram gates in the city, which will be inspired by the design of Ram Temple. A Ramayana Spiritual Forest will be constructed in 2300 acres, which will also house Ramayana Spiritual Theme Park.
Earlier in February, CM Adityanath had said that the state government's proposal for an international airport in Ayodhya has been approved by the Centre, and about Rs 1,000 crore has been allocated to the district administration by the state government.

From developing a green township to a new airport of international standards, the Ayodhya Development Authority is looking to turn the city into a religious tourism destination.
The vision document proposes to construct four main Lord Ram gates in the city, which will be inspired by the design of Ram Temple. A Ramayana Spiritual Forest will be constructed in 2300 acres, which will also house Ramayana Spiritual Theme Park.
Earlier in February, CM Adityanath had said that the state government's proposal for an international airport in Ayodhya has been approved by the Centre, and about Rs 1,000 crore has been allocated to the district administration by the state government.
