<p>Delhi Capitals skipper Axar Patel was fined Rs 12 lakh for maintaining slow over-rate during his team's 12-run defeat at the hands of Mumbai Indians in an IPL game. MI scored 205 for 5 in 20 overs while DC were all out for 193 in 19 overs.</p>
<p>"Delhi Capitals captain Axar Patel has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match No. 29 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 against Mumbai Indians at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi. As this was his team&rsquo;s first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL&rsquo;s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Patel was fined INR 12 lakhs," the BCCI said in a release.</p>
<p>While this was DC's first defeat in the tournament, Axar continued to struggle, having gone wicketless in five matches and managing only 67 runs with the bat.</p>

<p>The selection of India&rsquo;s squad for the 2025 Champions Trophy is set to be challenging, with players like KL Rahul, Mohammed Shami, and Ravindra Jadeja facing uncertainty about their places in the team.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Out-of-form veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will continue to form the batting core of India's ODI squad but there are at least three senior players whose future in the 50-over format could be debated when the selectors gather this weekend to pick the squad for the Champions Trophy.</p>
<p>KL Rahul, Mohammed Shami and Ravindra Jadeja's presence in the side is not a surety for the event starting February 19 even though they were a part of last year's World Cup.</p>
<p>Since the final, India have played six ODIs and while Shami and Jadeja were rested, Rahul was included for both the away bilateral engagements against South Africa and Sri Lanka.</p>
<p>Against Sri Lanka, however, he was dropped in the middle of the series after failing to get going in the middle overs. The world is also yet to forget how his sedate half century after using up 100-plus deliveries became a prime reason for India's loss on November 19, 2023 against Australia.</p>
<p>It is understood that Yashasvi Jaiswal has a very bright chance of making it to the ODI squad. His inclusion would ensure a left-handed batter in the top four.</p>
<p>But if Rishabh Pant is the first-choice wicketkeeper, then would there be any point in having Rahul as the back-up? And if Rahul is not keeping, his place as a batter is not guaranteed.</p>
<p>Among his closest competitors, Ishan Kishan hasn't scored enough runs in the Vijay Hazare Trophy while Sanju Samson hasn't been picked by Kerala after he missed the initial games.</p>
<p>If coach Gautam Gambhir still has his say in selection matters like he did till the disastrous Australia tour, then Samson, one of his personal favourites, will surely make the cut.</p>
<p>India will play all their Champions Trophy games in Dubai, starting with the clash against Bangladesh on February 20. This was after the team refused to travel to original hosts Pakistan citing security concerns.</p>

<p><strong>Jadeja's white-ball woes</strong></p>
<p>Jadeja's white ball batting hasn't been as good as it used to be and those who are tracking the selection committee feel that Axar Patel is being seen as way more effective in the ODIs at the moment.</p>
<p>Washington Sundar is expected to make it as an off-spinner but Kuldeep Yadav's fitness is something that selectors would be fretting on. Kuldeep is near full fitness but hasn't played a Vijay Hazare Trophy game.</p>
<p>In case Kuldeep fails to make it, one among Ravi Bishnoi or Varun Chakravarthy is expected to be picked.</p>

<p><strong>Shami's fitness</strong></p>
<p>Coming to Mohammed Shami, the veteran pacer's communication with the team management and the selection committee on his fitness status didn't seem to have the required clarity.</p>
<p>However, he has bowled eight overs each in the last two Vijay Hazare Trophy games and in case Jasprit Bumrah fails to make it due to back spasms, Shami's experience will become crucial for the side.</p>
<p>Hardik Pandya is the seam bowling all-rounder and it will be interesting to see if Nitish Reddy will be considered.</p>
<p>Among the reserve specialist batters, the choice could be between Rinku Singh and Tilak Varma.</p>

<p>As the T20 World Cup buildup picks up pace, Indian spinner Axar Patel said he first wants to focus on the IPL and the England Test series.</p>

<p>Forced to sit out of the ODI World Cup with an injury, Axar Patel said he is pinning his hopes on IPL 2024 to rekindle his chances of getting a berth in the Indian squad for the T20 showpiece in June.</p>
<p>The left-arm spinner gave a good account of himself in the first T20I against Afghanistan Thursday, taking two wickets while conceding 23 runs in four overs.</p>
<p>"My job is to give 100 percent to my work ethics and the process. I am not worrying too much about what will happen to the World Cup team selection, and if I do that, I will be putting pressure on myself.</p>
<p>Right now, I want to focus on the IPL and then we also have a Test series against England coming up soon," Axar said in the post-match press conference.</p>
<p>India have just two more T20Is scheduled ahead of the World Cup to be held in the West Indies and the USA, and Axar was aware that there will be too many contenders jostling for an India berth.</p>
<p>"Yeah, we are going to play the last two T20Is before the World Cup, and then we have the IPL. I know there is a lot of competition out there (for a WC spot in India team), but my competition is to myself and I just want to focus on adding to my skill sets," he added.</p>
<p>That polishing the skill-level part, Axar said, had begun during his recovery time at the NCA.</p>
<p>"It was unfortunate that I got injured during the World Cup and missed it. But I took it positively and tried to improve my game. I was working during my time at the NCA &ndash; things like line and length, slower ball and such variations.</p>
<p>I was trying to add something more to my bowling as a left-arm spinner, as we don't have that many variations like a leg-spinner such as googly. But I was looking to add those 5 or 10 percent to my bowling," said Axar.</p>
<p>The 29-year-old was also delighted to see his efforts at the NCA paying off in the series against Australia and in the first game against the Afghans.</p>
<p>"I was not trying to be overtly aggressive on this (Mohali) pitch and batsmen took some chances against me and that also worked for me. I was trying to mix my deliveries up like slower balls etc.</p>
<p>It worked for me in the series against Australia as well and I have carried that confidence into this series. I am looking at putting more pressure on the batsmen," said the Gujarat bowler.</p>

<p>Axar Patel has been one of the brightest spots for Delhi Capitals this IPL season, where they have struggled immensely in the absence of their full-time skipper Rishabh Pant.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br><br>While David Warner's captaincy did no good to the Delhi-based franchise in teh 2023 season, Patel feels that backing the captain is very important during such tough phases.<br><br>Under Warner, who was named the captain of the team after Rishabh Pant was ruled out, could only lead his side to 5 wins in 13 games. DC who were teh first team to face elimination are languishing at the 9th spot in teh IPL table.&nbsp;<br><br>In an interview with Indian Express, Patel said that even if DC would have proposed him to take over the captaincy mid-season he would have turned down the offer.&nbsp;<br><br>'When your team is going through such a bad season, these kinds of things make it worse. You need to back your players, your captain and if you will change captaincy in the middle of the season it doesn't send good message', he told Indian Express.&nbsp;<br><br>We failed collectively as a team, you can't blame teh captain, the allrounder added.<br><br>Patel is the 2nd highest run-getter for the franchise this season. he has accumulated 268 runs and also taken 11 wickets in 13 games in 2023.&nbsp;</p>

While it’s true that Warner has gone into a shell this IPL, owing to the fact that other batters have struggled, vice-captain Axar Patel deserves plaudits for how he is leading the way in terms of impact with the bat.

<p>Delhi Capitals captain David Warner has 3 half-centuries in 4 matches in IPL 2023 but it&rsquo;s safe to say that despite averaging 52.25 with the bat, the Aussie&rsquo;s strike rate of 115 has left a lot to be desired.</p>
<p>While it&rsquo;s true that Warner has gone into a shell this IPL, owing to the fact that other batters have struggled, vice-captain Axar Patel deserves plaudits for how he is leading the way in terms of impact with the bat.</p>
<p>Warner&rsquo;s 47-ball 51 was no match for what Axar did against the Mumbai Indians. With the Capitals&rsquo; skipper struggling to find the big hits, it was the 29-year-old&rsquo;s 54 off 25 that proved to be the difference between a paltry 130-score and the 172 they finally managed at the end.</p>
<p>Even in the game against the Gujarat Titans, it was Axar&rsquo;s 36 off 22 that saw the Capitals reach a respectable 162, though Delhi lost that game as well.</p>
<p>Warner does feature among the top run-getters this season, but he&rsquo;s looked like a shadow of his former self, and it&rsquo;s Axar who&rsquo;s proving his worth with the bat.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The way Washington bowled, batted and fielded, it was more like Washington against New Zealand than India against New Zealand. If he and Axar can continue the way they are, it will help the Indian cricket a lot." New Zealand skipper Mitchell Santner also said it was "a bit of a shock" for everyone the way ball spun in the second innings. "But it was a great game and it was pretty tight at the end, we saw a lot of runs in the ODI series and it was nice to see the ball spin a bit more," he said.</p>
<p>The win was set up by Devon Conway (52) and Daryl Mitchell (59), who smashed commanding fifties.</p>
<p>"I don't think we were ever safe, 170-odd was nice with Daryl hitting a couple over and he batted extremely well, we knew we had a sniff with 180.</p>
<p>"It was nice to chip some wickets in the powerplay and we had troubled with that in the ODIs," added Santner, who had 18 dot balls in his 2 for 11.</p>
<p>"At the toss we were going to bowl because we know chasing is so good over here and especially with the dew. That's always the challenge (on captain using himself).</p>
<p>"You don't want to be seen doing the easy overs and stuff like that. We knew it was spinning in the powerplay and it was nice to chip one out." Mitchell, who was adjudged Player of the Match, for his sensational innings, said he trusted his skills and tried to keep it simple.</p>
<p>"It is nice to contribute to a score which helps us win a game. I thought the way the boys bowled at the end was pretty special. It is nice to take some momentum into the rest of the T20 series," he said.</p>
<p>"The guys who went in early said it was pretty difficult against spin because of the tacky nature. It was my job to build a partnership and then take the onus on myself after Conway's departure.</p>
<p>"For me it is being really present and really clear, keeping it simple as possible and trusting my skills, not every time it comes off in T20 cricket but it is always nice when you get a few off the middle." India and New Zealand will face off in second T20 on Sunday in Lucknow.</p>
