The Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu aims to make air travel affordable to common man by making airfare affordable. This, he said after taking charge as the Civil Aviation Minister on Thursday
<h3>'Check on airfare'&nbsp; </h3>
After assuming office, Naidu said that his first priority is to keep a check on airfare and create 'ease of flying'. While saying that the steps to be taken to keep air fares in check were not yet decided he assured that his intention was to make air travel affordable to the common man.
"My target is to make India the largest civil aviation market in the world and to achieve that, the prices have to affordable. We are going to hold a policy meeting to take necessary steps", Naidu said
Naidu further acknowledged that despite bringing in schemes like UDAAN, external factors such as Covid had played a part in the aviation sector.&nbsp;
"The department has to sit down and discuss. Whenever that happens, my priority would be to bring down the prices," he added.
<h3>Aviation sector in India</h3>
Aviation sector in India has seen rapid growth as air traffic continues to rise and airlines expand their operations by connecting new destinations. However there also has been concerns in certain quarters about airfares being higher, especially during peak seasons.&nbsp;
On average, the number of daily domestic air traffic is around 4.3-4.5 lakh, and domestic airlines carried more than 15.20 crore passengers in 2023.
Earlier in February, a Parliamentary Committee proposed route-specific capping of airfares and setting up of a separate entity to exercise control over air ticket prices. The panel pronounced that the self-regulation of ticket prices by airlines has not been effective.
Meanwhile, on civil aviation infrastructure, Naidu said that the department was being looked upon by the government with prime focus.

Aviation consultancy and research firm CAPA India on Thursday called for a new long-term aviation policy in the backdrop of the aviation landscapes witnessing rapid changes in the post-Covid period. &nbsp; In a statement on Friday, the firm said the policy should plan for airport capacity that will last for a generation and beyond, must define an international air services strategy in line with India's national interests as well as restructuring of airspace design to provide capacity for up to 8-10x of the current traffic, among others.
The government had in 2016 announced a comprehensive aviation policy to give a flip to the domestic aviation industry. However, the emergence of the pandemic in early 2020 almost grounded the aviation industry globally and changed the entire dynamics.
"CAPA India (has) outlined a roadmap for the formulation of a new civil aviation policy, designed to support a transformational vision for what Indian aviation can aspire to be in 20 years from now,&rdquo; CAPA India said in the statement.
The Indian aviation system, in the just-concluded financial year, handled less than 200 million airline passengers, as per the firm.
Indian aviation is at a critical inflection point. The opportunities could have positive implications for generations to come. India has to choose whether it wishes to pursue a transformative, aspirational vision or more conservative, linear growth, said Kapil Kaul, Chief Executive Officer and Director at CAPA India.
Achieving such a dramatic ramp-up in scale will require a tremendous effort across the aviation eco-system with each and every element of the industry required to play their part to realise this opportunity which, if happens by FY2043, could make Indian aviation a USD 1 trillion annual business, taking into account direct, indirect, induced and catalytic impacts, as per CAPA India.

The country's airline industry is poised for expansion with more than 1,100 planes on order by various domestic carriers. After Air India placed an order for a total of 470 planes with Airbus and Boeing, budget airline Akasa Air will place a "substantially" large order for new narrowbody jets this year. According to reports, Akasa Air, which launched services in August last year, has placed an order for 72 Boeing 737 Max planes. The airline is looking to capitalise on booming demand at home and begin international flights, the company's founder and CEO Vinay Dube told Reuters.
The order is likely to be made before the end of this year and will be for narrowbody planes.&nbsp;

India has jumped to the 48th position in the global aviation safety ranking by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), according to DGCA officials.
Four years ago, the country was ranked at the 102nd position.
In the ranking, Singapore is at the top, followed by the UAE and South Korea at the second and third positions, respectively, the officials said.
China is at the 49th place, they added.
Under its Universal Safety Oversight Audit Programme (USOAP) Continuous Monitoring Approach, an ICAO Coordinated Validation Mission (ICVM) was undertaken from November 9 to 16.
On Saturday, DGCA chief Arun Kumar told PTI that the regulator has worked tirelessly to upgrade India's safety ranking and the results are there. "Hopefully, we continue to remain vigilant and improve further".
The country's score in terms of effective implementation of key safety elements has improved to 85.49 per cent, the officials said.
On November 16, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said the audit was conducted in the areas of legislation, organisation, personal licensing, operations, airworthiness and aerodromes.
"As per the initial reports, the mission was highly successful. India has done extremely well and our scores will see a substantial improvement putting us in the company of nations with best safety standards and oversight systems," it had said in a release.
