Government incentives, including those to consumers, local battery manufacturing, state-level subsidies and cut in GST rates would help drive EV penetration in India, Moody's has said.
In a report, Moody's Investors Service said India has the fourth-largest car market globally, but electric vehicle (EV) penetration is currently only around 1%.
The pace of increase in EV sales and towards the government&rsquo;s target of 30% by 2030 will also depend on the country's charging infrastructure, and consumers' readiness to switch to EVs from traditional ICE vehicles, or those traditional engines powered by petrol, diesel, or natural gas.
'We expect various government incentives will drive an increase in EV penetration. These include consumer incentives, production-linked incentives for advanced battery storage to drive local cell manufacturing, goods and services tax (GST) rate cuts, and other state-level subsidies,' Moody's said.
India has beaten Japan to become the third-largest vehicle market in 2022 after China and the USA.
Last month, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari had said that if India can use the lithium reserves recently discovered in Jammu and Kashmir, it can become the world's number one automobile manufacturer in the electric vehicle segment.
Lithium is a crucial element in producing batteries that power electric vehicles.
The government aims to have EV sales accounting for 30% of private cars, 70% for commercial vehicles and 80% for two-and three-wheelers by 2030.
Moody's said Tata Motors retains an early mover advantage in the battery EV market in India, with a 85% share (April-December 2022).
Presence through 250 dealers across 165 cities, and with close to 4,300 charging points, has already allowed the company to sell some 50,000 EVs, Moody's said.
Tata said it plans to increase its EV line-up from four models to 10, by March 2026. Tata's EV business has already raised $1 billion from private-equity investor TPG, it added.

Automobile retail sales in India rose 14 per cent in January on the back of robust registrations across passenger vehicles, two-wheelers and tractors, dealers' body Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations said on Monday.
Total sales across categories last month rose to 18,26,669 units, as compared to 16,08,505 units in January 2022.
Passenger vehicle registrations rose to 3,40,220 units last month, an increase of 22 per cent as compared to 2,79,050 units in the year-ago period.
Similarly, two-wheeler retails rose to 12,65,069 units last month, as against 11,49,351 units in January 2022, an increase of 10 per cent.
Three-wheeler retail sales rose to 65,796 units, up 59 per cent from 41,487 units in January last year.
Commercial vehicle registrations were at 82,428 units in January, up 16 per cent from 70,853 units in the year-ago period.
Similarly, tractor sales rose by 8 per cent to 73,156 units last month, as against 67,764 units in January last year.
Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) President Manish Raj Singhania said the total retail sales in January grew as compared with year-ago period but still remained down by 8 per cent when compared to pre-Covid month of January 2020.

As per reports, an 80-year-old man was killed and two others injured when the detachable battery of an electric scooter, kept on charge inside a home in&nbsp;Telangana, exploded and triggered flames, causing burn injuries.

Police have registered an FIR against the e-scooter manufacturer Pure&nbsp;EV who has seen three incidents of battery fires recently. So far along with Pure,&nbsp;one Ola, two Okinawa, and 20 Jitendra EV scooters have caught fire.
This is not the first incident where a fire has claimed a life.&nbsp;In a second unfortunate event, a father and daughter were killed in the early hours of March 26 in Vellore, Tamil Nadu, when an unknown type Okinawa electric scooter caught fire.

The govt has called for an expert panel to probe into the issue and Union minister&nbsp;Nitin Gadkari&nbsp;said the government will issue necessary orders on defaulting companies after receiving the report.

Maruti Suzuki, India's top carmaker, announced Wednesday to hike vehicle prices in April 2022 owing to the rising input costs.
In an exchange filing, Maruti said, “Over the past year, the cost of Company's vehicles continue to be adversely impacted due to increase in various input costs. Therefore, it has become imperative for the Company to pass on some impact of the above additional costs to customers through a price hike. We have planned this price rise in April, 2022. The increase shall vary for different models."
Touching upon supply chain issues, Maruti Suzuki's Senior Executive Director Shashank Srivastava told PTI, the semiconductor shortage has led to huge pending orders in the industry. "We alone are sitting on pending bookings of around 2.7 lakh units. Rise in commodity prices also impacts the business. We have taken a price hike of around 8.8% from January 2021 till now."

Customers who have booked Ola&nbsp;e-scooter can finally take the next step of purchasing the new-gen&nbsp;vehicle, the deliveries for which will start in October.

Talking about the features, the S1 Pro packs a 3.9 kWh battery, which can charge fully in 6 hours. Using an Ola Supercharger, it can be charged up to 50% in 18 minutes.
At a full charge, the S1 Pro has a claimed range of 181 km. It comes with a 7-inch touchscreen display with connectivity options, cruise control, reverse mode, and built-in speakers, along with a 50-litre boot.
