The Indian Government has unveiled a new policy to promote electric vehicle manufacturing in the country. Under the policy, the minimum investment requirement will be ₹4150 crore. Manufacturers will get three years to set up manufacturing plants and start commercial production of electric vehicles. The new policy also says that the manufacturers must reach 50% domestic value addition within five years.
Import of EVs with lower custom duty
One of the key provisions of the new EV manufacturing policy is that companies setting up manufacturing facilities for EVs will be allowed limited imports of cars at lower custom duty. Remember, this has been a long-standing demand from Elon Musk's Tesla in order to set up a manufacturing base in India.&nbsp;

Boosted by strong demand, automobile retail sales in India surged by 11% in 2023 compared to the previous year, hitting 2,38,67,990 units, according to FADA, the dealers' body.
Passenger vehicle sales clocked 38,60,268 units, marking an 11% increase from 2022's 34,89,953 units. Two-wheeler sales grew by 9%, reaching 1,70,61,112 units, while three-wheeler sales soared by 58% to 10,80,653 units.
Commercial vehicle sales saw an 8% rise to 9,94,330 units, and tractor sales reached 8,71,627 units, a 7% increase from the previous year.

December 2023 saw a substantial 21% surge in overall automobile retail sales to 19,90,915 units compared to December 2022's 16,43,514 units. Passenger vehicle sales reached 2,93,005 units, a 3% increase year-on-year.
Two-wheeler sales experienced a remarkable 28% rise to 14,49,693 units in December 2023 compared to the same period in the previous year.
FADA gathered sales data from 1,355 out of 1,442 regional transport offices across the country. It forecasts growth in each sector for the upcoming year, anticipating product launches, stable market sentiments, and enhanced economic conditions to drive demand. Additionally, factors like lower fuel prices, agricultural payments, and an uptick in EV participation are expected to further fuel customer sentiment and demand. The commercial vehicle segment is poised for growth, buoyed by increased government spending, infrastructural projects, and the replacement of older vehicles.

Delhi auto, taxi drivers asked to wear uniform, warned of heavy fines upon violation

Ahead of G20 summit, Delhi auto, taxi drivers asked to mandatorily wear uniform

Every taxi and auto rickshaw is required to obtain the permit to ply on road. The permit is governed with certain conditions, prominent among them is that a person will not drive a vehicle without wearing appropriate uniform as prescribed

Delhi government in an order on Monday asked auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers in the city to wear a uniform while driving, warning them of heavy fines if they fail to comply, and suspension of licence for repeat offenders.
Under section 66 of Motor Vehicle Act, 1988 every taxi and auto rickshaw is required to obtain the permit to ply on road. The permit is governed with certain conditions, prominent among them is that a person will not drive a vehicle without wearing appropriate uniform as prescribed, said an order issued by the Transport department of Delhi government.
The autos and taxi unions said they were ready to follow the order, but also urged the government to lower the Rs 10,000 fine.
A transport official said that initially the focus will be on creating awareness among drivers to wear uniforms as the city&rsquo;s going to host the G20 summit and the government does not want to give a bad impression.
"All the drivers of taxi and auto rickshaw are hereby directed not to drive the vehicle, without wearing prescribed uniform, failing which challan will be issued for violation of permit condition," the Monday order read.
The "habitual offender" may face "stringent action" for not wearing uniform ranging from heavy challan along with either suspension or cancellation of driving licence or registration of vehicle, as deemed fit, it stated.
Wearing of uniforms is also mandatory for drivers of electric passenger vehicles.
Rajinder Soni, general secretary of Delhi Autorickshaw Sangh, said that the uniform will give the drivers an identity.
"However, there should not be a heavy fine, which is Rs 10,000, in case some driver fails to turn up in uniform because of any genuine reason. Presently, the fine amount is not fixed, sometimes drivers are imposed Rs 500 and sometimes the amount is higher," Soni said.
As per the Delhi Motor Vehicle Rules 1993, drivers of auto and taxi need to wear khaki uniform while driving their vehicles. However, around 1995-96, the colour was changed to grey for drivers and white for those who owned and drove their taxis and autos.
The drivers of autos and taxis have no problem wearing uniform but the challan has been a problem, said Chandu Chaurasia, president of Capital Drivers Welfare Association.
"Auto and taxi drivers hardly earn 2,000-4,000 per day. The Rs 10,000 fine is very steep for them," he said.
In 2021, Delhi High Court had sought a response from the Centre and Delhi government on a plea challenging mandatory uniforms for auto and taxi drivers in the city.
It was claimed in the petition filed by a drivers union - Chalak Shakti- that challans up to Rs 20,000 were being imposed on auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers for not wearing uniform. It was also claimed by the petitioners that the law itself was vague and ambiguous on the colour or type of uniforms.
It was not defined whether pant-shirt, Safari suit or Kurta-Pyjama qualified as uniform. Further, there was nothing about the type of fabric, colour and its shade, trims and accessories associated with the uniform, the petition had stated.

Maruti Suzuki informed the exchanges that the automaker is recalling 166 Dzire Tour S vehicles due to a faulty Airbag Control Unit. Tata Motors' EV subsidiary has inked a pact to acquire Ford India's Sanand-based manufacturing plant for Rs 725.7 crore.
As part of the deal, Tata Motors will get entire land and buildings, vehicle manufacturing plant along with machinery and equipment situated therein, the Mumbai-based auto major said in a statement.
The deal also includes transfer of all eligible employees, it added.
FIPL will continue to operate its power train manufacturing facility by leasing back the land and buildings of the power train manufacturing plant from TPEML on mutually agreed terms, Tata Motors said.
TPEML has agreed to offer employment to eligible employees of the plant in the event of FIPL's cessation of such operations, it added.
The government of Gujarat, TPEML and FIPL have already executed a tripartite MoU on May 30, 2022 to support all relevant approvals for the above transaction.
Tata Motors said with its manufacturing capacity nearing saturation, the acquisition is timely and a win-win for all stakeholders.
The Sanand plant has a manufacturing capacity of 3 lakh units per annum which is scalable to 4.2 lakh units per annum.
TPEML will make the necessary investments to reconfigure the plant to adapt to Tata Motors' existing and future vehicle platforms, the automaker said.
The unit is adjacent to the existing manufacturing facility of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Limited at Sanand, which should help in a smooth transition, it added.
“The agreement with FIPL signed today is beneficial to all stakeholders and reflects Tata Motors strong aspiration to further strengthen its market position in the passenger vehicles segment and to continue to build on its leadership position in the electric vehicle segment," Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles MD Shailesh Chandra noted.
Ford Motor Company Transformation Officer Steve Armstrong said the  announcement marks an important step forward in the company's ongoing business restructuring in India.
The company in September last year had announced that it would stop vehicle production at its two plants in the country as part of a restructuring exercise.
Both TPEML and FIPL will work together over the next few months to satisfy all the condition precedents and obtain the required regulatory approvals for the closure of the transaction, Tata Motors said.

In order to avoid the heatwave, Kumar decided to grow some plants on the rooftop of his auto which helps him and as well as the passengers stay cool in the vehicle. Plants on his vehicle's rooftop protect passengers from the direct sunlight. So far, Kumar’s garden has almost 25 types of plants, such as tomatoes, okra, snake gourd, and spinach.
Kumar has not recently implemented this idea instead he had implemented this in 2020 itself, he told Reuters 'I thought that this will provide a cooling effect during summer so that is why I grew plants on it.' People are also appreciating Kumar's creative and conservative move and liking the ride.

Cab drivers' unions have been demanding a hike in fare rates and a reduction in CNG prices.
The unions have refused to call of their strike despite an announcement by the Delhi government to form a committee to consider fare revision in a time-bound manner.
General secretary of the Delhi Auto Rickshaw Sangh, Rajendra Soni, said the "unprecedented" hike in rates of CNG has taken a toll auto and cab drivers.
"We know that the Delhi government is forming some committee but we need solutions to our problems which is not in sight. We are demanding that the government (Centre and Delhi) provide Rs 35 per kg subsidy on CNG prices," he said.
Hundreds of auto, taxi and cab drivers staged a protest at the Delhi Secretariat recently demanding subsidy on CNG prices.
There are over 90,000 autos and more than 80,000 registered taxis complementing the public transport system in the city.
The price of CNG is currently Rs 71.61 per kg in Delhi.

"We have decided to go on an indefinite strike from Monday in view of no action by the government to help us by slashing prices of fuels and revising fares," President, Sarvodaya Driver Association Delhi, Kamaljeet Gill, said.
General secretary of the Delhi Auto Rickshaw Sangh, Rajendra Soni, said the "unprecedented" hike in rates of CNG has taken a toll auto and cab drivers.
"We know that the Delhi government is forming some committee but we need solutions to our problems which is not in sight. We are demanding that the government (Centre and Delhi) provide Rs 35 per kg subsidy on CNG prices," he said.
Hundreds of auto, taxi and cab drivers staged a protest at the Delhi Secretariat recently demanding subsidy on CNG prices.
"We cannot keep plying our autos and cabs bearing losses everyday as the CNG prices are galloping. This is a symbolic protest to oppose the price hike," Soni said.
There are over 90,000 autos and more than 80,000 registered taxis complementing the public transport system in the city.
General secretary of STA Operators Ekta Manch, Shyamlal Gola, said that RTV buses, numbering around 10,000, will also be off road in support of the demands to revise fares and bring down CNG prices.
The feeder buses play a crucial role in last mile connectivity running from Metro stations to interior localities in the city. PTI

Commuters in Delhi may face problems as various unions of auto, taxi and mini bus drivers have decided to go on strike on Monday.
The unions have been demanding hike in fare rates and slashing of CNG prices.
While most unions said they will be on one-day strike, the Sarvodaya Driver Association Delhi, which has members who drive for cab aggregators, said it will go an "indefinite" strike from Monday.
The unions have refused to call of their strike despite an announcement by the Delhi government to form a committee to consider fare revision in a time-bound manner.

Ahead of its grand launch on March 14, Tesla has released a new teaser image of the Model Y. The company has not revealed any specific details for the new compact electric SUV but allegedly shares a lot in common with the Tesla Model 3 and according to reports will be 10 per cent bigger than the Model 3 variant.
