British pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca is withdrawing its Covid-19 vaccine globally weeks after it made a rare admission in a UK court that its vaccine can cause side effects in very rare cases.
AstraZeneca submitted the withdrawal application on March 5 in the EU and the application came into effect on May 7. The pharma major said it will make similar applications in the UK and other countries.&nbsp;
But, the firm said that it is removing the vaccine from the markets for commercial reasons and called timing as pure coincidence. Telegraph newspaper reported on May 7 that the vaccine is no longer being manufactured or supplied. AstraZeneca's vaccine was marketed as Covishield in India and was manufactured by Pune-based Serum Institute of India.&nbsp;
In a statement, the company said: &ldquo;We are incredibly proud of the role Vaxzevria played in ending the global pandemic. According to independent estimates, over 6.5 million lives were saved in the first year of use alone and over three billion doses were supplied globally.
&ldquo;Our efforts have been recognised by governments around the world and are widely regarded as being a critical component of ending the global pandemic.
&ldquo;As multiple, variant Covid-19 vaccines have since been developed, there is a surplus of available updated vaccines. This has led to a decline in demand for Vaxzevria, which is no longer being manufactured or supplied. AstraZeneca has therefore taken the decision to initiate withdrawal of the marketing authorisations for Vaxzevria within Europe.
&ldquo;We will now work with regulators and our partners to align on a clear path forward to conclude this chapter and significant contribution to the Covid-19 pandemic.&rdquo;&nbsp;
Earlier, AstraZeneca admitted in court documents lodged with the High Court in February that the vaccine &ldquo;can, in very rare cases, cause TTS&rdquo;.
TTS stands for Thrombosis with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome. TTS involves blood clots in the brain or other parts of the body, along with a low platelet count. It has been linked to at least 81 deaths in the UK as well as hundreds of serious injuries. AstraZeneca is being sued by more than 50 alleged victims and grieving relatives in a High Court case.

For the first time, British Pharma giant AstraZeneca has admitted that its Covid vaccine can, in very rare cases, cause blood clots and low blood platelet count.&nbsp;
The firm made the statement before the High Court in the UK on April 29 as it is being sued for 100 million pounds in a class action lawsuit over claims that its vaccine caused death and serious injury in 51 cases, reported the Daily Telegraph newspaper.&nbsp;
In India, its vaccine, which was developed by the University of Oxford, was sold under the name of Covishield and manufactured by the Pune-based Serum Institute of India.&nbsp;
According to the attorneys, some households faced a "devastating effect" of the vaccination.
"It is admitted that the AZ vaccine can, in very rare cases, cause TTS. The causal mechanism is not known...Further, TTS can also occur in the absence of the AZ vaccine (or any vaccine). Causation in any individual case will be a matter for expert evidence," AstraZeneca said.
AstraZeneca has, however, denied the lawyers' claims that the vaccine is "defective" and its efficacy "vastly overstated".
The firm's admission came in response to one of the complainants, Scott mentioning that he developed a &ldquo;blood clot and a bleed on his brain&rdquo;, leaving him with a severe brain impairment.&nbsp;
He claimed that his situation was caused by the AstraZeneca Covid vaccine, which he took in April 2021. The hospital even informed his wife that Scott would not be able to survive.&nbsp;
Lawyers representing families suing the drugs company argue that the vaccine was not as safe as individuals were entitled to expect. They are suing the firm under the Consumer Protection Act of 1987, and are seeking damages up to 100 million pounds.

Drug firm AstraZeneca India on Tuesday said it has received approval from the country's drug regulator to market anti-diabetes medication Dapagliflozin.
The company said it has received approval from the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDCSCO) for the drug indicated for diabetes patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD).
Dapagliflozin is the first and only anti-diabetic drug approved to significantly reduce the risk of sustained eGFR (estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate), cardiovascular deaths and hospitalisations due to heart failure in adults with progressive chronic kidney disease, the drug firm said.
The approval is applicable for both diabetic and non-diabetic CKD patients, it added.
CKD is one of the leading causes of hospitalisation globally and in India, representing a significant clinical and economic burden.
"The timely approval of Dapagliflozin from the CDCSCO committee with the additional indication is a huge boost for nephrologists across the country towards the management of progressive CKD," AstraZeneca India Vice President - Medical Affairs and Regulatory Anil Kukreja said in a statement.
The approval will provide the clinical community with a potential therapeutic option to arrest the progression of CKDs and address heart failures at an early stage, he added.

AstraZeneca’s nasal Covid vaccine not as effective as expected: Study

AstraZeneca's intranasally-administered vaccine against COVID-19 did not perform as expected in a small study published on Tuesday, suggesting there are likely to be challenges in making nasal sprays a reliable option.

The trial enrolled 30 previously unvaccinated participants to receive a primary dose of the intranasal vaccine.

The findings from a Phase 1 clinical trial, published in the journal eBioMedicine, show mucosal antibody responses were generated in a minority of participants.
Systemic immune responses, which involves many other immune cells, to intranasal vaccination were also weaker compared with intramuscular vaccination, the researchers said.
The study was performed in collaboration with the University of Oxford and used the same vaccine based on the ChAdOx1 adenovirus vector, as is already licensed for use by injection.
The ChAdOx1 vector used in the vaccine is a weakened version of a common cold virus (adenovirus) that has been genetically modified so it is impossible for it to replicate in humans.
The latest study is thought to be the first to have published data from administration of an adenovirus-vectored vaccine using a simple nasal spray.
The trial enrolled 30 previously unvaccinated participants to receive a primary dose of the intranasal vaccine.
Additionally, the researchers studied the feasibility of the intranasal vaccine as a booster. 12 participants, who had previously received a standard two-dose COVID-19 vaccine schedule by injection, were administered the intranasal vaccine.
The study found that the vaccine did not generate a consistent mucosal antibody nor a strong systemic immune response.
However, no serious adverse events or safety concerns were reported during the trial, the researchers said.
"The nasal spray did not perform as well in this study as we had hoped,&rdquo; said Associate Professor Sandy Douglas, Chief Investigator of the trial at the University of Oxford.
&ldquo;This was quite different from recent data from China, which has suggested good results can be achieved by delivery of a similar vaccine deep into the lungs with a more complex nebuliser device," Douglas said.
India last month gave emergency-use approval for Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech's iNCOVACC, an intranasal antidote to virus that its makers termed "a global gamechanger".
The company claimed the vaccine was "safe, well-tolerated, and immunogenic" when compared to its own Covaxin in a phase III trial of over 3,000 participants across 14 sites in India.
"A nasal spray vaccine similar to ours has recently been approved for intranasal use in India and we are looking forward to the peer-reviewed publication of the clinical trial data used to support that,&rdquo; Douglas said.
"We believe that delivery of vaccines to the nose and lungs remains a promising approach, but this study suggests there are likely to be challenges in making nasal sprays a reliable option," he added.
One possibility, the researchers explained, is simply that the majority of the nasal spray vaccine ends up being swallowed and destroyed in the stomach -- delivery to the lungs could avoid that.
A further challenge is that researchers don't fully understand the relationships between the strength and types of immune responses within the airways and protection against infection.
"We urgently need more research to develop vaccines which can block transmission of respiratory pandemic viruses using delivery routes which are safe and practical at large scale,&rdquo; Douglas added.&nbsp;

To support India in the battle against the coronavirus, Sweden plans to donate 1 million doses of AstraZeneca vaccines via the UN-backed COVAX, an initiative devised to give countries access to coronavirus vaccines regardless of their wealth.
However, Sweden's donation to India will not have any impact on their vaccination drive. Sweden currently is only administering AstraZeneca shots to people 65 and over.
Sweden's vaccine coordinator Richard Bergstrom said there were enough spare vaccines that Swedes could give away.&nbsp;

AIIMS Director Dr Randeep Guleria has said that drugmakers AstraZeneca and Bharat Biotech are conducting studies to determine safe and effective doses for children. "If we really need to control the pandemic and have children back to school and be comfortable with that, we will have to look for vaccines which are for children," Dr Guleria told NDTV. AstraZeneca and Bharat Biotech's Covishield and Covaxin vaccines are being used in the country's inoculation drive against the coronavirus. Dr Guleria's remarks came on a day when pharma companies BioNTech-Pfizer declared that their vaccine trials showed 100 per cent efficacy against the coronavirus in children aged between 12 and 15. They are planning to get approval for the vaccine's use in the United States on children under 15.
