Having coached Arsenal in 2018-19, this will be Emery's second stint in the Premier League.
The 50-year old had been with Villarreal since July 2020. Previously, he coached Paris Saint-Germain and Sevilla as well.
Meanwhile, second-tier club Middlesbrough also got a new coach in Michael Carrick, who was a former Manchester United midfielder and assistant manager. He will replace Chris Wilder.

Premier League club Aston Villa have decided to part ways with manager Steven Gerrard after the club's 3-0 defeat to Fulham in the league.
With Aston Villa sitting just above the relegation zone, the club decided to sack the former Liverpool player after a string of poor results. It was right after the 42-year-old's post-match press conference that the club came out with the statement.
"Aston Villa Football Club can confirm that head coach Steven Gerrard has left the club with immediate effect,&rdquo; the club said in a statement Thursday.
&ldquo;We would like to thank Steven for his hard work and commitment and wish him well for the future.&rdquo; They further added.
Gerrard was appointed as Villa's manager after he won the Scottish Premier League with Rangers in his first managerial job.
