Congress' poll drubbing in the recently held assembly elections in 5 states has led to a renewed demand for a change in the party leadership. 
Even as dissenting leaders of Congress, referred to as G-23, held a meeting at senior party leader Ghulam Nabi Azad's house to discuss future course of action, Karnataka unit chief DK Shivakumar backed the Gandhi family. 
In an interview of NDTV, Shivakumar said that the Congress cannot stay united without the Gandhis at the top. He said that the family is key for the unity of the party, adding that it is impossible for the Congress to survive without the Gandhis. 
While Congress lost Punjab to AAP, in Uttar Pradesh they managed to win just 2 seats. In Uttarakhand they won 19 out of 70 seats, in Goa they won 12 out of 40 and in Manipur they got 5 out of 60.

In a statement issued on Saturday, UP's Chief Electoral Officer Ajay Kumar Shukla said that conducting the exit polls, its publication in print or electronic media or its publicity has been banned from 7.00 am on February 10 to 6.30 pm on March 7.
Any person who violates the order will be punished with a two-year jail term or fine or both. 
According to reports, opinion polls in any kind of media will also be banned during the 'silence period' that begins 48 hours before the day of polling.
Counting of votes are the 7-phase assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh will be done on March 10.

Amid a surge in Covid-19 cases, the Election Commission on Saturday extended its ban on physical rallies and roadshows until January 22 in the five poll-bound states.
The poll panel, however, granted a relaxation for the political parties to the extent that indoor meetings of maximum 300 persons or 50 per cent of the capacity of the hall, or the prescribed limit set by state disaster management authorities, an official statement said.
The Commission also directed political parties to adhere to the provisions of the model code of conduct and broader guidelines on Covid-19.
The poll panel directed state and district administrations to ensure compliance of all instructions related to the poll code and to the pandemic control measures.
While announcing the poll schedule for Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand Manipur, Goa and Punjab on January 8, the EC had taken an unprecedented step of banning public rallies, roadshows and similar physical campaigning events till January 15.

The Election Commission on Saturday said it will be compulsory for political parties to upload details of candidates with criminal cases on their websites.
Adding that winnability&nbsp;cannot be the only condition, Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra said that parties will also have to mention the reasons behind fielding such candidates in the 5-state assembly elections which begin next month.&nbsp;
There will be mandatory publicity of criminal antecedents, in newspapers and TV channels on three occasions, he added.
The decision is in line with the Supreme Court's ruling last year, in which it had suggested political parties publish details of candidates with a criminal background on their respective websites, social media and newspapers.

Such details have to be published in one local newspaper and one national newspaper and on social media within 48 hours of filing of nomination,&nbsp;the court had ruled in February 2020.

The Election Commission on Saturday said it will be compulsory for political parties to upload details of candidates with criminal cases on their websites.

The decision is in line with the Supreme Court's ruling in which it had suggested political parties publish details of candidates with a criminal background on their respective websites, social media and newspapers.

Adding that winnability&nbsp;cannot be the only condition, Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra said that parties will also have to mention the reasons behind fielding such candidates in the 5-state assembly elections which begin next month.&nbsp;
There will be mandatory publicity of criminal antecedents, in newspapers and TV channels on three occasions, he added.
The decision is in line with the Supreme Court's ruling last year, in which it had suggested political parties publish details of candidates with a criminal background on their respective websites, social media and newspapers.

Such details have to be published in one local newspaper and one national newspaper and on social media within 48 hours of filing of nomination,&nbsp;the court had ruled in February 2020.

All polling officials will be fully vaccinated and will be considered frontline workers. All eligible officials will be given a 'precaution dose' of the Covid-19 vaccine. 
In order to avoid crowding, the poll panel has limited the number of voters to 1,250 people for every polling booth. The number of polling stations has been increased by 16%. Voting hour has also been extended by an hour. 
Thermal testing will be done at all voting booths and any voter who registers increased body temperature will be given a token and asked to come back during last hour of voting. 
Senior citizens above 80 years of age, people with disabilities and all Covid-19 patients will be allowed to vote through postal ballot.

The Election Commission has announced restrictions on campaigning for the assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Goa, Uttarakhand and Manipur keeping in mind the surge in coronavirus cases in the country.

The poll panel has banned all physical rallies, roadshows and marches till January 15. It will take call on their resumption according the to Covid-19 situation on that date.
No rallies, roadshows or any kind of public election campaigning can be done between 8pm and 8am even after January 15.
The Election Commission also restricted people who can go for door-to-door campaigning to 5.
All political parties have been asked to campaign digitally and virtually as much as possible.
The Commission has also banned victory celebrations and only two persons will be allowed to accompany the candidate to collect the winning certificate.&nbsp;

While the tenure of the Uttar Pradesh legislative assembly ends in May, the terms of the legislative assemblies of Goa, Manipur and Punjab end on different dates in March.
