Assam Police&rsquo;s special digital awareness drive, &lsquo;DJ Lockup&rsquo;, targeting drunken driving, reached a staggering 154 million views, resulting in a 55 per cent drop in accidents in Guwahati compared to previous year, a senior official said on Thursday. &nbsp; &nbsp; In December last week, Assam Police revived its awareness theme and built the road safety campaign for New Year celebrations around the caption &lsquo;DJ Lockup&rsquo; as part of the larger initiative called &lsquo;No Regret New Year&rsquo;. &nbsp; &nbsp; "The idea proved timeless, going viral again, amassing over 154 million views in just 2-3 days. The initiative garnered over 100 media mentions in local, national and international outlets, positioning Assam Police as a leader in innovative public safety campaigns," special DGP Harmeet Singh told PTI. &nbsp; &nbsp; This time, it resonated not just as a social media trend but as a potent tool for behaviour change with the campaign earning accolades nationwide, he added. &nbsp; &nbsp; "The success of #DJLockup isn't just measured in likes and shares. The campaign's tangible impact is evident in significant reduction of drunken driving cases in Guwahati. On December 31, the number of such cases dropped by a staggering 55 per cent compared to the previous year," Singh said. &nbsp; &nbsp; This campaign translated to fewer accidents, injuries and lives lost -- a testament to the power of creative awareness, he added. &nbsp; &nbsp; "Police departments from Punjab to Gujarat adapted the idea for their own campaigns with many retaining the core essence of #DJLockup while adding local flair. The ripple effect was undeniable as police forces in Delhi, Shillong, Kolkata and Ahmedabad rolled out their versions inspired by Assam Police," Singh claimed. &nbsp; &nbsp; He also pointed out that the campaign received mentions in international outlets and endorsements from influential personalities, including the likes of Anand Mahindra applauding a Punjab Police poster that drew inspiration from Assam Police's campaign. &nbsp; &nbsp; First launched in 2021, the #DJLockup initiative was initially introduced as part of Assam Police&rsquo;s New Year road safety drive. Presented as a tongue-in-cheek "party invite", it humorously warned revelers of the consequences of drunken driving, inviting them to an "exclusive DJ Lockup party." &nbsp; &nbsp; Commenting on the idea, the SDGP said, "Our goal was to prioritise the safety of our citizens while presenting the message in a way that resonates with people. Seeing police forces across India adopt this idea reaffirms its effectiveness and far-reaching impact." &nbsp; &nbsp;On New Year&rsquo;s Eve, the campaign urged revelers to party responsibly and avoid landing in jail with a series of witty posts. The campaign included a "line-up" featuring &lsquo;DJ Lockup, DJ Breathalyzer, MC Seatbelt, DJ No-Drunk-Driving, and DJ Sober Rider feat." It also specified a 'dress code' of 'helmets, seatbelts &amp; good decisions', appealing to the public to 'party smart, stay safe'.

Assam police has launched a manhunt for one its officers after he was accused of taking obscene pictures of a minor girl inside a police station in Nalbari district. Inspector Biman Roy is believed to be on the run and the police has announced an reward for any information leading to his arrest. He has now been suspended.&nbsp;
Director General of Police, GP Singh, tweeted his condemnation on June 29.&nbsp;
"When we entered the police service at SVP National Police Academy Hyderabad, it was always taught to us that police station is a temple for all police personnel and the safest refuge for the citizens. Today I am deeply disheartened and anguished at the turn of events," he tweeted."Being convinced of the instant case being rarest or rare (sic), and as the Director General of Police and Head of Police Force of Assam, and in accordance with extant law &amp; rules, I have decided to dismiss Inspector (UB) Biman Roy from Assam Police," the tweet said. He also announced a reward for information about his whereabouts.
On June 21, a minor girl and a boy were taken into custody in a child marriage case. The girl has said that the inspector took objectionable photos of her in the station premise.
A case has been registered against Roy at the Nalbari police station for wrongful confinement of a person with the intent to insult the modesty of a woman. He has also been booked under sections of Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences Act related to use of children for pornographic purpose.

Congress MLA Jignesh Mevani was arrested by Assam Police from Palanpur town in Gujarat on late Wednesday night over a tweet and taken to Assam by air in the early hours, officials said on Thursday.
The prominent Dalit leader from Gujarat was arrested soon after a First Information Report (FIR) under section 153A of the Indian Penal Code, which deals with offences related to promoting enmity between communities, was registered at Kokrajhar police station in Assam, said his aide Suresh Jat.
"As per a document shared by the officials of the Assam police, an FIR has been lodged over a tweet by Mevani few days back. However, the tweet has been withheld by Twitter. It was about Nathuram Godse. Mevani was first brought to Ahmedabad by road and then taken to Assam by air early today morning," he added.
Mevani is independent MLA from Vadgam seat in Banaskantha. He recently extended support to Congress.
In a statement, Mevani's office said he was arrested by Assam police from Palanpur circuit House at 11:30 pm on Wednesday.
Gujarat Congress president Jagdish Thakor and other Congress leaders rushed to Ahmedabad Airport after learning about his arrest and shouted slogans against the BJP government.
