Asian Games Selections Deadline Set for NSFs

At the Khelo Bharat Conclave, Sports Secretary Hari Ranjan Rao asked NSFs to finalise selection plans for Asian Games 2026 by August 29, emphasizing early preparation, ACTC digitisation, etc.

Sports secretary Hari Ranjan Rao on Thursday urged National Sports Federations (NSFs) to finalise their selection mechanism for next year's Asian Games by August 29 to ensure a greater focus on preparations for the showpiece in Japan.
Rao was addressing NSFs in the one-day 'Khelo Bharat Conclave' in the national capital where an action plan to take Indian sports forward is being discussed by various stakeholders, including sports minister Mansukh Mandaviya, representatives of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and corporate houses, and prominent former athletes.
"Let's have a selection plan for the Asian Games by August 29, which is also the National Sports Day (and the birth anniversary of hockey icon Dhyan Chand). If we do that, we will have one entire year to prepare ourselves," Rao, who is also the Director General of the Sports Authority of India (SAI), told the gathering.
The Asian Games is scheduled to be held from September 19 to October 4 next year in Aichi-Nagoya. India would be aiming to better their best performance of 106 medals, including 28 gold, that was achieved in the previous edition in Hangzhou, China.
Rao's suggestion to the NSFs comes months after the Sports Ministry laid down strict guidelines on selection processes for quadrennial showpieces and the world and continental championships.
The ministry has asked NSFs to publicise the selection criteria for showpieces such as the Olympics, Paralympics, Asian Games, Para Asian Games and Commonwealth Games at least two years in advance.
However, as is clear from Rao's statement, the plan is still a work in progress for next year's showpiece.
The directives also make it mandatory for NSFs to upload selection policies on their respective websites and amend them only if there is a three-month window before a competition. It has also been made compulsory to videograph selection trials.
Standardisation of the selection criteria has been a long-standing demand in sports like shooting where renowned pistol coach Jaspal Rana has stated that policies which are not codified in advance negatively impact athletes.

Rao, who was formerly an additional secretary to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), also called on the NSFs to digitise their Annual Calendar of Training and Competition (ACTC) and upload them on the National Sports Repository System in the next couple of months.
"I request cooperation from everyone, let's go online by October 1. Let's get rid of this offline ACTC documentation," he said.
Rao also revealed that three task forces, as mandated by the recently-released Khelo Bharat Niti, are in the works.
"The three task forces would be entrusted with the responsibility of improving the quality of coaches, create a good pool of administrators and make India a sports manufacturing hub. These task forces would be constituted soon," he said.
Also, the two labs for at the National Forensic Sciences University in Ahmedabad are now operational and testing supplements for possible presence of banned substances to ensure that athletes are saved from ingesting anything that is prohibited.
"Our athletes, a lot of times, take supplements which are contaminated. They are not aware, and these labs will go a long way in saving them," Rao said.
Good Governance With the National Sports Governance Bill, which emphasises on accountability of administrators set to be introduced in the Parliament next week, Rao said it is the right time for the NSFs to act.
"I say on the upcoming National Sports Day, take a vow to announce three good governance measures in your NSF. It will reflect a commitment," he said.

India won an unprecedented 107 medals, including 28 gold, in the games that ended on Sunday. In the Chinese city, the country saw an increase of 37 medals from the previous best achieved in the 2018 edition.
"After this record-breaking performance in the Hangzhou Asian Games, if our country's athletes, coaches and national federations work hard, I feel we can win double digit medals in the Paris Olympics," Usha told PTI here.
"The government is doing everything possible for the betterment of Indian sports and for the athletes. Our prime minister takes a lot of interest in the country's sports." She said the time has come for India to bid for the Olympics.
"We should bid for the 2036 Olympics. I am sure India will win more medals in the Paris Olympics than in Tokyo, and then, with the medals to show, we can host the Olympics," said the 59-year-old former track star fondly known as 'Payyoli Express'.
The government could formally express India's interest to host the 2036 Olympics during the International Olympic Committee (IOC) session in Mumbai from October 15 to 17.
After recent reforms, the IOC has moved away from the traditional bidding process. After the interested countries place their proposal of interest, the IOC's Future Host Commission will identify and propose its preferred candidate to the Executive Board.
The Executive Board can then enter targeted dialogue with a bid and then decide whether to recommend that a proposal be brought to a vote at an IOC Session.
Usha, who took charge as IOA chief in December last year, said she was not at all surprised at India winning more than 100 medals in Hangzhou.
"I am an athlete myself and I knew from the beginning that India will win more than 100 medals in Hangzhou. So I was not surprised when we crossed 100 medals," said Usha, who missed an Olympic 400m hurdles medal by one-hundredth of a second in the 1984 Los Angeles Games.
"When it (100 medals) happened, I told my colleagues that I knew India will win around 105 medals, and that happened.
"I am happy that India achieved a record medal haul in the Asian Games during our tenure. Everybody worked hard -- the athletes, coaches, support staff and officials. The government was ready to provide everything." She said the most encouraging aspect about the record haul was that India won medals in several sports, and just a few ones.
"As a track and field athlete myself, I am so happy that we won 29 medals from athletics though the number of gold was less than last time.
"Shooting and archery did very well. And we won medals in so many sports, that is the most encouraging thing." India won at least a medal in 22 sports. India sent 660 athletes to Hangzhou, the largest ever contingent, to compete in 39 sports.
Asked about the overall organisation of Hangzhou Games, she said, "China has the experience of hosting big events. From landing at the airport to the Athletes Village and many other things, it has been very smooth except for a few technical glitches (in athletics) which I feel happen in events of such magnitude.
"Even the technical glitches cannot be intentional. This kind of thing can happen and has happened in the past.
"In the 100m hurdles case also (involving India's Jyothi Yarraji) the correction was done and the medal was upgraded to silver."&nbsp;

Bajrang Punia, who entered the Asian Games after escaping the selection trials, suffered embarrassing defeats to make a medal-less exit from Hangzhou even as three other Indian wrestlers, including the talented Aman Sehrawat, won bronze medals.

Bajrang lost his Men's freestyle 65kg bronze medal match to former World Champion (Jr.) Kaiki Yamaguchi of Japan 0-10.

Bajrang Punia, who entered the Asian Games after escaping the selection trials, suffered embarrassing defeats to make a medal-less exit from Hangzhou even as three other Indian wrestlers, including the talented Aman Sehrawat, won bronze medals.
An under-prepared Bajrang, who spent a major part of this year protesting against WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, began with two easy wins but appeared clueless against the formidable Iranian Rahman Amouzadkhalili and Japan's Kaiki Yamaguchi.
Vishal Kaliraman had won the Asian Games trials but the IOA ad-hoc panel, led by Bhupender Singh Bajwa, had handed Bajrang a direct entry, a decision which invited criticism from the wrestling fraternity.
Sending defending champion Bajrang, someone who was terribly short of competition time this year, in the tough men's 65kg competition proved to be a mistake by the Bajwa-led panel.
Even Vinesh Phogat, a leading face of the wrestlers' protest, was spared from the trials but, as luck would have it, she suffered an injury and Antim Pangal got to compete and made an impression by winning a bronze medal in Hangzhou.
Bajrang was routed 1-8 by Iran's Amouzadkhalili in the semifinals after he beat weak opponents in the Philippines' Ronil Tubog (8-1) and Bahrain's Alibeg Alibegov (4-0).
Seeing an easy rival in his opening bout would have eased Bajrang's nerves and he began with a four-pointer to go on board. The Philippines wrestler looked too overwhelmed, and could not make a single move while Bajrang raced to an 8-0 lead in the first period.
It was a matter of one take-down move, and defending champion Bajrang found that soon to finish the bout by technical superiority.
Next up for him was Alibegov, who was expected to put up a good fight but Bajrang was hardly troubled by the Bahrain wrestler. The Indian showed good defence to walk out a 4-0 winner.
Taking the mat for his toughest test of the day, Bajrang was thrashed 8-1 by Amouzadkhalili, the 2022 world champion and reigning Asian champion, who stunned the Indian with a four-pointer at the start of the bout.
The Iranian lifted and almost rolled Bajrang over after getting hold of his right leg. The four-pointer rattled Bajrang, while the Iranian stayed solid to defend his lead till the end of the first period.
Amouzadkhalili effected one more four-pointer at the start of the second period to double his lead. A desperate but flummoxed Bajrang tried two leg attacks but the Iranian defended well.
Eventually, Bajrang earned one point but the Iranian just ran away with the bout.
In the bronze play-off, Bajrang could not make a single attacking move and lost his bout by technical superiority.
The Japanese was quick with his single-leg attacks that he kept converting into points. He led 4-0 at the end of the first period and continued in the same fashion in the second, controlling the bout in a splendid manner.
Sonam Malik (65kg) and Kiran (76kg) also lost their respective semifinals in the women's competition to go out of the gold medal race as four of the five Indians in action fell at the last-four stage.
In the men's 57kg competition, Aman moved into the quarterfinals with an easy 6-1 win over Korea's Kim Sunggwon.
Up against Iran's Ebrahim Mahdi Khari, who is the U20 Asian Championships silver medallist, Aman found himself trailing 1-8 in quick time but the Chhatrasal Stadium trainee turned it around in a sensational manner to win by technical superiority.
Aman reeled off 18 straight points, putting to work his immense strength and technical prowess to bamboozle the young Iranian.
Going into the second period 3-8, Aman employed a right-leg attack and tried to roll Khari, attempting a pin. The Iranian survived that move but there was no stopping Aman after that as he pulled away with one move after another.
However, he bumped into Japan's Toshihiro Hasegawa, who raced to a 6-1 lead. It looked like Aman would effect a turnaround yet again as he reduced the deficit by taking four straight points.
It turned into a high-scoring bout with the two wrestlers pulling off attacking moves, but eventually, the Japanese prevailed 12-10.
In the bronze medal bout, Aman did not give his Chinese rival Minghu Liu any chance and closed it with a dominating technical superiority victory.
In the women's competition, Sonam Malik (62kg) and Kiran Bishnoi (76kg) did not have to do much in the initial easy rounds but were exposed terribly when they faced better rivals in the semifinals.
Sonam did not have to break a sweat in her first two rounds in which she outclassed Nepal's Sushila Chand and Cambodia's Noeurn Soeurn, winning both the bouts by technical superiority in less than a minute.
Sonam was pinned by North Korea's Hyongyong Mun, and the Indian could not score a single point against her.
She prevailed 7-5 against China's Jia Long in a tight contest to take the bronze.
In the 11-wrestler women's 76kg category, Kiran got a bye in her opening round and got the better of Japan's young wrestler Nodoka Yamomoto 3-0 in the last-eight clash, to sail into the semifinals.
In the next round, she was pinned by Kazakhstan's Zhamila Bakbergenova.
However, she redeemed herself by winning the bronze play-off 6-3 against Mongolia's Ariunjargal Ganbat.
Radhika (68kg) was the only Indian wrestler in action on Friday who could not reach the medal round.
India have won five bronze medals so far in wrestling in this edition. Four more wrestlers will be in action on Saturday.&nbsp;

Skipper Harmanpreet Singh led admirably as the Indian men's hockey team mauled defending champions Japan 5-1 to reclaim the Asian Games gold, their fourth in the continental showpiece, after nine years and qualify for next year's Paris Olympics.

Harmanpreet scored a brace through penalty corners to finish the tournament as India's top scorer with 13 goals, one ahead of striker Mandeep Singh.

The Indians, who had to be content with a bronze medal in the last edition in Jakarta, thus won their fourth Asian Games gold and first since the 2014 Incheon edition.
India's other gold medals came in 1966 and 1998, both times in Bangkok.
South Korea won the bronze medal after eking out a close 2-1 win over hosts China.
Harmanpreet (32nd, 59th minutes) scored a brace through penalty corners, Amit Rohidas (36th) also sounded the board from a set-piece, while Manpreet Singh (25th) and Abhishek (48th) found the net from field efforts to register the famous victory for India.
Seren Tanaka converted a penalty corner for Japan in the 51st minutes.
Harmanpreet, thus, finished the tournament as India's top scorer with 13 goals, one ahead of striker Mandeep Singh.
The Indians, who ended the tournament unbeaten, were by far the better side against Japan, whom they had defeated 4-2 in the pool stages.
The Indians mostly used the flanks to great effect to build their attacks and also used down-the-line long balls to perfection.
The Tokyo Olympics bronze medallists were quick to get off the blocks and made quite a few circle penetrations but failed to convert them into goals in the first quarter.
India played high-press hockey and constantly put the Japanese defence under pressure.
They got their first chance in the fifth minute but Lalit Upadhyay's deflection from a pass from the left flank was saved by Japanese goalkeeper Takumi Kitagawa.
The Indians kept on pressing hard and, in the process, secured their first penalty corner of the match but Harmanpreet's flick was brilliantly saved by an agile Kitagawa.
Two minutes into the second quarter, India earned another penalty corner but the variation didn't work as Rohidas's flick went over the post.
India continued their attacking hockey and finally took the lead in the 25th minute when Manpreet scored from a rebound with a powerful reverse hit from top of the circle after Abhishek's initial try, from close range, was saved by the Japanese goalkeeper.
Two minutes from half-time, India goalkeeper PR Sreejesh was alert in front of his goal and was perfectly placed to deny Japan's try, blocking the ball with his legs.
Two minutes into the second half, India secured three consecutive penalty corners and this time Harmanpreet was bang on target with the final attempt, sounding the board with a powerful drag-flick to the left of Kitagawa's extend left leg.
Minutes later, Rohidas tripled India's lead, finding the net with a powerful high flick that beat Japan goalkeeper Kitagawa all ends up.
Shamsher Singh then came close to registering his name in the score sheet only to be denied by Kitagawa.
It was complete domination by the Indians as three minutes into the fourth and final quarter Abhishek made the scoreline 4-0 from a tight angle after receiving a pass from vice-captain Hardik Singh.
With nothing to lose, Japan woke up in the last 10 minutes and secured two back-to-back penalty corners and Tanaka pulled one back.

Teen sensation Antim Panghal humbled Tokyo Olympics medallist Bolortuya Bat-Ochir 3-1 to win a bronze medal but other Indian wrestlers struggled badly at the Asian Games here on Thursday.
The 19-year-old Antim bounced back after losing to two-time Japanese world champion Akari Fujinami in the quarterfinals in a superb manner as she did not let the Mongolian attack much in the women's 53kg bronze play-off.
Antim saved the day for the Indian contingent which badly needed a medal after Narinder Cheema (Greco-Roman 97kg), Naveen (Greco Roman 130kg) and Pooja Gehlot (women's 50kg) were ousted.
Pooja was outplayed 2-9 in the bronze medal bout by Aktenge Keunimjaeva, the Asian championship bronze winner.

India had a special day 12 at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, where they won medals in archery, squash, and wrestling among others. India won 3 Gold on October 5 taking their Gold medal tally to 21 for the ongoing Asian Games. While the men's and women's teams added gold medals in compound archery, the pair of Dipika Pallikal and Harinder Pal Singh Sandhu also came out on top in the mixed doubles final in squash. And Day 13 promises to be another big day for the Indian contingent with a number of medals on the line for Team India on October 6.
All eyes will be on the men's hockey team, who will take on defending champions Japan in the final on Friday. With the women's team suffering a disappointing 4-0 loss against China, all of India will be hoping for the men's team to at least bring home one Gold from Hangzhou.
The Indian men's cricket team will also return to the cricket field on Friday morning for their semifinal against Bangladesh set to begin at 6:30 am IST. Indian athletes will also be in contention for medals in the men's and women's team events in recurve archery. Star wrestler Bajrang Punia will headline the wrestling events for India on October 6. Bajrang, who is the defending Asian Games Champion from Jakarta 2018, will be hoping to successfully defend his title in the men's 65kg category. From Neeraj Chopra and Kishore Jena in javelin throw to the Compound Archery mixed team of Ojas Deotale and Jyothi Surekha Vennam, India tightened their grip on the fourth spot on the medal tally with another exceptional show. India have already achieved their best-ever medal haul in the history of the Asiad, going well past the 70 medals they had won in Jakarta 2018 with 3 more days still to go in Hangzhou 2022.
With a number of medal events set to take place on October 5, India's medal tally could rise even further on day 12 of the Asiad, especially in archery, squash, wrestling and athletics.
In archery, the men's and women's compound teams will feature in the quarterfinals first up before the medal rounds and with world champions in their ranks, India will be unhappy with anything but Gold.

Meanwhile, Chithravel finished third in the men's triple jump, ahead of his compatriot Abdulla Aboobacker (16.62 metres) in fourth to win the bronze medal. Chithravel's best jump of 16.68 metres was only behind the two Chinese jumpers, who won the Gold and silver.

India also confirmed as many as 3 medals in the individual category in Compound archery. In squash, India have already assured medals in 3 events while in badminton, a number of Indian athletes made it to the next round. With a number of medal events set to take place on October 4, India's medal tally could rise exponentially on day 11 of the Asiad, especially in archer, athletics, boxing and wrestling. On day 11 of the Asian Games, Olympic Champion Neeraj Chopra will headline the athletics events where India will surely be the favourites on October 4. Apart from Neeraj&rsquo;s Javelin Throw event, a number of other big guns will also be in action, including Avinash Sable in Men&rsquo;s 5000m, and Harmilan Bains in Women&rsquo;s 800m. The men's and women&rsquo;s 4x400m teams will also be vying for gold in the final on Wednesday.
In hockey, favourites India will take on South Korea in the semi-final of the men's hockey team. Saurav Ghosal was dominant in his men&rsquo;s singles victory, while the mixed doubles pairs were also equally facile in their waltz to the semifinals of the squash competition, assuring India of three medals in the Asian Games here on Tuesday.
Veteran Ghosal was in his elements while scoring 11-5, 12-10, 11-3 win over Japan's Ryunosuke Tsukue, while the mixed doubles team of Anahat Singh and Abhay Singh defeated Yang Yeonsoo and Dongjun Lee 11-4, 8-11, 11-1 in 32 minutes.
India started the quarterfinals on a bright note through the mixed doubles duo of Dipika Pallikal and Harindar Pal Singh Sandhu, who produced a come-from-behind victory over Jemyca Aribado and Andrew Garica of Philippines 7-11, 11-5, 11-4.
However, it was curtains for India&rsquo;s Tanvi Khanna as she lost to Satomi Watanabe in the women&rsquo;s singles quarterfinals 5-11, 6-11, 12-14.
Ghosal, a gold medallist in Incheon Games 2014, brought forth his years of experience to put it against Tsukue as the Indian breezed past the first game 11-4.
But the Japanese gave the top seeded Ghosal a more challenging time in the second game, running the Indian close point by point.
However, Ghosal found an opening when the score was 11-10, as the Indian&rsquo;s powerful forehand caught the Japanese short in the back court. Ghosal took that game 12-10.
Once he conceded a 2-0 lead, the fight seemed to have ebbed out of the Japanese, as Ghosal ran roughshod over him to win the game 11-3 in just 10 minutes and the match along with it.
Ghosal brought the winning moment with a neatly placed low volley near the front wall that Tsukue failed to even reach.
Earlier, in the mixed doubles, the Philippines duo started the game well and built a 9-6 lead from where they won it easily.
But Dipika and Harinder regrouped quickly in the next two games to win as their rivals struggled to hit the front wall regularly and failed to retrieve the ball effectively.
In the pre-quarterfinals matches, Dipika and Harinder Sidhu breezed past Japan's Risa Sugimoto and Tomotaka Endo 2-0 (11-5 11-5) in Pool A, while Anahat teamed up with Abhay to beat Hong Kong's Tsz Wing Tong and Ming Hong Tang in 2-0 (11-10 11-8) in Pool D.&nbsp;

Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain is assured of a silver medal at least after reaching the final of the Women's 75kg event in boxing.
Lovlina, the reigning World Champion, won by a unanimous 5-0 decision against Thailand's Baison Maneekon. She also became the first Indian boxer to reach the final at the ongoing Asian Games. Her final berth also booked her a place at the Paris Olympics next year.
While Lovlina had another terrific outing, boxer Preeti Pawar had to settle for bronze after going down to the defending Asian Games Champion, home favourite Yuan Chang in the women's 54kg category.

Experienced striker Vandana Katariya, vice-captain Deep Grace Ekka and Deepika slammed a hat-trick each as India stormed into the semifinals of the women's hockey competition at the Asian Games with a 13-0 drubbing of Hong Kong in their final pool match here on Tuesday.
Vandana (2nd, 16th, 48th minutes) scored three field goals, while Deep Grace (11th, 34th, 42nd) converted three penalty corners for India. Deepika (4th, 54th, 58th) was not to be left behind as she also emulated the feat of her senior teammates in India's rout of Hong Kong.
Sangita Kumari (27th, 55th), Monika (7th) and Navneet Kaur (58th) also registered their names on the scoresheet.
India are on top of Pool A with 10 points from four games and have much superior goal difference than second-placed side South Korea who have seven points with a match in hand. South Korea take on Malaysia in their final group league match later on Tuesday.
Two teams from each pool qualify for the semifinals.
It was a complete domination from the Indians as they toyed with Hong Kong's defence from the word go to pump in six goals in the first two quarters and seven more after half-time.
It took India just two minutes to surge ahead when Vandana found the net from Navneet Kaur's pass.
The Indians soon earned back-to-back penalty corners but wasted the chances as Hong Kong defended bravely.
India doubled their lead from a quick counter-attack through Deepika, who found the net from Vandana's assist.
It was raining goals as Monika and Deep Grace scored two more in quick succession to hand India 4-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
A minute into the second quarter, Vandana scored her second with a tomahawk from edge of the circle.
Three minutes from half-time, Sangita tapped in Monika's pass as India enjoyed a comfortable 6-0 lead at the break.
The trend continued after the change of ends as India's relentless pressure resulted in seven more goals.
Deep Grace converted two penalty corners in the third quarter to complete her hat-trick.
Vandana followed suit with another tomahawk goal to bring up her hat-trick.
Deepika then converted two penalty corners with scorching flicks to match her senior teammates.
In between, Sangita and Navneet also found the net once each.
India will face the second-placed team of Pool B in the semifinals on Thursday.
