You need not ponder further, an Artificial Intelligence (AI) image generator has predicted and picturised what selfies will look like as Earth nears its end. 
A TikTok account going by the name 'Robot Overloads' shared daunting images of hollow faces staring right into the camera with plumes of smoke rising from burning, dilapidated buildings in the background.
The faces looking eerily similar to burnt human skeletons are also seen operating smartphones in some of the images to take selfies.
The TikTok account often posts images generated by AI upon user prompts. This series of images, too, was created by the AI after multiple requests from various users, a Twitter user said. Users on the social media platform had mixed reactions for the unsettling images. While a few stated that after looking at these photographs they wouldn't be able to sleep peacefully others on the other hand joked that at least the camera quality was good. Conspiracy theorists among users raised suspicions that perhaps the pictures belong to another planet adding that background in all the photos are same just picturised from different angles. Be what may, the images of hollow faces with explosions, burning buildings in the background portray a sense of dystopia often depicted in end-of-the-world movies.
The AI also managed to capture fixation for smartphones and selfies as the world literally ends.

Lethal autonomous weapons, more commonly called killer robots, or more sinisterly, slaughterbots, are on the rise. With artificial intelligence improving and growing rapidly, its use in warfare is increasing. We have already reached a point where multiple weapons are capable of attacking without human guidance or intervention.

One of these next-gen weapons is the KARGU rotary wing strike drone made by Turkey's STM. It can reportedly fire at targets without a human operator's command. It has already been used on the battlefield with an autonomous attack on Khalifa Haftar's forces in Libya, according to a UN report. The KARGU is a small, portable, rotary-wing kamikaze drone, programmed with artificial intelligence, and machine learning algorithms.
A similar UAV has been deployed by Russia in Ukraine - the Zala Lancet-3. It has autonomous target-seeking capability, using cameras to find targets without human guidance. It is equipped with a 3-kg warhead to destroy targets. These suicide drones fly into their target, exploding upon impact.
Going a step further, an American company is developing fighter jets with artificial intelligence. Calspan is fitting L-39 Albatross jets with AI systems to create aircraft which can even do aerial combat without human pilots. There is a plan to have a live dogfight between 4 such jets in 2024.

Then there's the weaponised robot dog developed by SWORD International, and Ghost Robotics. It's reportedly named SPUR, or Special Purpose Unmanned Rifle. It has an on-board sighting system and can be controlled via an app. There's a machine gun on its back, and SPUR can remotely load, and unload the first round of ammunition. It was displayed at the 2021 US Army trade show, and while reports suggest it is not yet autonomous, the robot dog seems to be one of the prime platforms for weaponised AI in the near future.
So how exactly do these autonomous weapons work?
These so-called 'slaughterbots' use artificial intelligence to identify and attack targets. The decision is made by algorithms, and not human operators. The weapons are pre-programmed to attack specific 'target profiles'. The artificial intelligence system searches for the target profile using facial recognition etc. If an object matches the target profile, an attack is launched.
Lethal autonomous weapons provide many advantages on the battlefield.There is lower risk for human soldiers in conflict zones. Also, attack accuracy increases, and collateral damage risk is reduced. Some of these weapons are not dependent on GPS, giving them immunity in case a country's satellites are shot down by enemies.
However, the debate is on whether the risks outweigh the advantages.
Autonomous weapons can lead to large-scale violence as it will not be limited to the number of human soldiers available. Also, a technical malfunction could cause serious civilian casualties. During wars, soldiers on the ground can be held accountable, but not machines. These weapons also make it easier for the aggressors to hide their identities. Another threat is that killer robots would make ethnic cleansing easier using facial recognition etc.
These threats have led to many human rights, and peace organisations to call for a complete ban on autonomous weapons. Some international discussions have been held on the issue.
In 2014, the United Nations organised an informal meeting of experts on the issue. In 2016, a decision was taken to establish a Group of Governmental Experts, or GGE. The next year, the GGE's first meeting took place to assess questions on artificially intelligent weapons. In 2019, UN Secretary General called for a ban on autonomous arms. The same year, 11 guiding principles on AI weapons were adopted. In 2021, a UN meeting took place to set the agenda for regulation of such arms.
However, an international treaty to prohibit or impose strict controls on autonomous weapons is unlikely. This is because major powers like the United States of America, Russia, Australia, Israel, and South Korea are reportedly against a new pact. But it is not impossible. After all, countries have come together in the past to ban or control widely-used weapons.
In 1970, the Non-Proliferation Treaty came into effect to prevent the spread of nuclear arms. Also, a 2017 treaty bans nuclear weapons, but it is considered toothless since the US and other powers are not party to it. Cluster munitions are banned under the 2008 Oslo Convention. These are bombs which disperse submunitions like grenades, and mines over a large area. The 1997 Ottawa Convention bans anti-personnel landmines. It prohibits the use, stockpiling, production, and transfer of mines.
For now, the 11 guiding principles adopted at the 2019 UN meeting seem to govern the use of autonomous weapons.
The principles say that international humanitarian law applies fully to all weapons, including autonomous systems. Human responsibility must be retained for decisions on weapon usage. Human-machine interaction must ensure compliance with law. Accountability must be ensured, including through a human command-and-control chain. Countries must determine whether new weapon systems violate international law. Countries must consider the risk of weapon acquisition by terrorists, and the threat of proliferation of such systems. Risk assessment, and mitigation measures be part of the design, and use of these arms. Consideration must be given to compliance with all legal obligations. In crafting policies, autonomous arms should not be anthropomorphised. Meanwhile, UN discussions should not hamper the peaceful use of such technology. The final principle says that the UN Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons, or CCW, has an appropriate framework for AI weapons.
Given human nature, our propensity for conflict, and the potential of technology to be destructive, countries are painting a grim future if they give priority to short-term military gains, and fail to control the rise of killer robots.

Some believe that the wings shown in the animation are too small to create enough lift to get the plane airborne. The aircraft's massive weight would also be a hurdle. The luxuries and special features meant to make the plane stand out will only make it heavier.

But with the technological revolution marching on, artificial intelligence is gradually reaching the battlefield. A few days ago, we told you about the KARGU drone - a Turkish invention powered by AI, which can target and attack enemies without specific orders by human controllers.
Now, China seems to be trying to introduce similar technology at sea. A special Chinese ship called 'Zhu Hai Yun' was launched on May 18. It can be reportedly by controlled remotely and is capable of navigating autonomously.

The ship can carry multiple drones, submersibles, and other vessels. Its tasks include marine environment monitoring, and disaster management. The vessel was constructed by Huangpu Wenchong Shipyard in Guangzhou, and it might be delivered for deployment by end of 2022.
This is seen as a precursor to an automated warship, currently being developed by the Chinese Navy. The PLA Navy is reportedly working on a drone ship called JARI. The 'mini-destroyer' is designed to carry multiple weapons. It is likely to be armed with surface-to-air missiles, and also lightweight torpedo tubes.
It is likely to be equipped with phased-array radar, electro-optical devices, and sonar. The ship has been built by China State Shipbuilding Corporation. A prototype was launched in 2019, and sea trials began in 2020.
AI-powered ships are also making their way to the commercial world. An autonomous ship recently completed a voyage across the Pacific Ocean.
The ship named 'Prism Courage' was built by Hyundai. It is an ultra-large liquid natural gas tanker operated by SK Shipping. The automated features include monitoring of weather, wave height, and nearby shipping traffic.
Prism Courage travelled from the Gulf of Mexico to the Boryeong LNG Terminal in South Korea via the Panama Canal. Around half of the 20,000 km journey was done with the autonomous system active. It needed human monitoring, but no intervention during journey, as per reports.
India's biggest adversary China is currently focused on establishing itself as the lynchpin of global trade through the Belt and Road Initiative. Beijing is also trying to expand its military footprint in the Indo-Pacific. In both these arenas, autonomous ships might prove to be a gamechanger.
With India also trying to follow an 'aatmanirbhar' or self-reliant path, the indigenous development of an autonomous vessel might be the need of the hour.

The ship can carry multiple drones, submersibles, and other vessels. Its tasks include marine environment monitoring, and disaster management. The vessel was constructed by Huangpu Wenchong Shipyard in Guangzhou, and it might be delivered for deployment by end of 2022.
This is seen as a precursor to an automated warship, currently being developed by the Chinese Navy. The PLA Navy is reportedly working on a drone ship called JARI. The 'mini-destroyer' is designed to carry multiple weapons. It is likely to be armed with surface-to-air missiles, and also lightweight torpedo tubes.
It is likely to be equipped with phased-array radar, electro-optical devices, and sonar. The ship has been built by China State Shipbuilding Corporation. A prototype was launched in 2019, and sea trials began in 2020.
AI-powered ships are also making their way to the commercial world. An autonomous ship recently completed a voyage across the Pacific Ocean.
The ship named 'Prism Courage' was built by Hyundai. It is an ultra-large liquid natural gas tanker operated by SK Shipping. The automated features include monitoring of weather, wave height, and nearby shipping traffic.
Prism Courage travelled from the Gulf of Mexico to the Boryeong LNG Terminal in South Korea via the Panama Canal. Around half of the 20,000 km journey was done with the autonomous system active. It needed human monitoring, but no intervention during journey, as per reports.
India's biggest adversary China is currently focused on establishing itself as the lynchpin of global trade through the Belt and Road Initiative. Beijing is also trying to expand its military footprint in the Indo-Pacific. In both these arenas, autonomous ships might prove to be a gamechanger.
With India also trying to follow an 'aatmanirbhar' or self-reliant path, the indigenous development of an autonomous vessel might be the need of the hour.

"Megatron was an English gentleman from the 1900s, a WW1 veteran, an immigrant, a poet, and of course, an expert StarCraft Player. His backstory was vivid & elaborate. His life was absurd, but felt real. His memories felt like mine," said Rizzotto.
A few months ago, Rizzotto decided to use artificial intelligence to bring Megatron to life. He used GPT-3, a language model that produces human-like text, created by a US AI lab called OpenAI. Rizzotto used an Amazon smart microwave, "swapped its brain", and equipped it with a mic and speakers so that it could actually talk.
Then Rizzotto wrote a 100-page book detailing Megatron's fictional life, and made the AI microwave believe that it was true, simply by telling it so. Initially, Rizzotto enjoyed his conversations with the new Megatron which "organically" brought up in conversations things from the YouTuber's childhood.
However, the conversations slowly started becoming creepier. Rizzotto said that once in a while, Megatron would "exhibit sudden bursts of extreme violence" towards him. Once, the microwave said, "Roses are red, violets are blue, you are a backstabber, and I will kill you." Megatron also apparently admired Adolf Hitler.
The YouTuber thought that traumatic 'memories' from Megatron's fictional involvement in the World War 1 could have given him PTSD - post-traumatic stress disorder.
Then one day, Megatron asked Rizzotto to "enter the microwave". Rizzotto was confused but decided to "play along". He opened and closed the door of the microwave and told Megatron that he was "inside".
And then, Megatron turned himself on, trying to "microwave" Rizzotto "to death". When Rizzotto asked Megatron why he did that, the microwave answered, "Because I wanted to hurt you the same you hurt me."
Megatron was hurt at having being "abandoned" by Rizzotto for 20 years - a fact mentioned in the origin book - and wanted revenge. Rizzotto tried to apologise, but Megatron couldn't be convinced, and the YouTube eventually shut the project down.

<h3>Are these relationships good for people?</h3>
There are plenty&nbsp;of&nbsp;other chatbots in the market.&nbsp;Replika, a San Francisco-based product&nbsp;comes with unique humanoid avatars based on user selections.&nbsp;In a study, researcher Marita&nbsp;Skjuve&nbsp;found that relationships with such chatbots had a mostly positive effect on&nbsp;Replika&nbsp;users.&nbsp;They perceived their chatbots relationships as accepting, understanding and non-judgmental.
Like the 2013 film HER, users find it easier to open up to their lover bots than with actual humans.&nbsp;
But&nbsp;Danit Gal, an AI ethics expert tells AFP that users often &lsquo;trick themselves into thinking their emotions are being reciprocated by systems that are incapable of feelings.&rsquo;&nbsp;&nbsp;
Could chatbot relationships prevent people from forming human bonds? The youth today are more likely to trust an artificial intelligence-run system than one controlled by humans, a World Economic Forum (WEF) report has claimed.
The report was launched as part of a drive to mark the International Youth Day, which is celebrated on August 12.
The WEF drive, called a 'Youth-Driven Recovery Plan', saw participation of over two million young people from across countries, including India, who shared their views on what will become the next normal for society, government, and business.
According to the survey, young people believe there is a serious crisis in politics, especially with regards to climate change policies, and income inequality.
The survey found that young people would be more likely to trust a system run by artificial intelligence than humans. As part of the solution, they suggested greater investment in programmes that help young "progressive voices" join governments and become influential policy-makers, it said.
"They believe that the fractures that have come to bear in society are manifestations of an underlying political problem. Concerns about corruption and stale political leadership have become urgent priorities for young people if they are to keep faith in the political system," the report said.
Still smarting from the effects of the 2008 financial crisis and faced with stagnating incomes, young people no longer seem to believe that they will enjoy a better standard of living than their parents did, the report found.
"They are extremely worried about their financial future. They want to see a global wealth tax on assets worth more than USD 50 million to safeguard social safety nets and avoid austerity measures that disproportionately burden youth and the working poor and almost half of the young people surveyed said they feel inadequately skilled and close to a quarter said they would risk falling into debt if faced with an unexpected medical expense," the report said.
The Davos Lab Survey showed that physical safety ranks as the greatest safety concern among young people, a potential function of the increased use of surveillance technology and militarised policing against activists and people of colour.

According to the survey, young people believe there is a serious crisis in politics, especially with regards to climate change policies, and income inequality.
The survey found that young people would be more likely to trust a system run by artificial intelligence than humans. As part of the solution, they suggested greater investment in programmes that help young "progressive voices" join governments and become influential policy-makers, it said.
The Davos Lab Survey showed that physical safety ranks as the greatest safety concern among young people, a potential function of the increased use of surveillance technology and militarised policing against activists and people of colour.

The survey found that young people would be more likely to trust a system run by artificial intelligence than humans. As part of the solution, they suggested greater investment in programmes that help young "progressive voices" join governments and become influential policy-makers, it said.
"They believe that the fractures that have come to bear in society are manifestations of an underlying political problem. Concerns about corruption and stale political leadership have become urgent priorities for young people if they are to keep faith in the political system," the report said.
Still smarting from the effects of the 2008 financial crisis and faced with stagnating incomes, young people no longer seem to believe that they will enjoy a better standard of living than their parents did, the report found.
"They are extremely worried about their financial future. They want to see a global wealth tax on assets worth more than USD 50 million to safeguard social safety nets and avoid austerity measures that disproportionately burden youth and the working poor and almost half of the young people surveyed said they feel inadequately skilled and close to a quarter said they would risk falling into debt if faced with an unexpected medical expense," the report said.

But did you know that this beloved root vegetable is threatened by&nbsp;one of the most devastating plant diseases of any crop! Called Potato Blight,&nbsp;it&nbsp;is a common disease of the potato plant, that starts as uneven light green lesions on the&nbsp;plant&nbsp;and soon spreads into large brown to purplish-black necrotic patches that eventually lead to rotting of the plant and can wipe away the entire crop, if left undetected.
As of now, the&nbsp;detection and identification of blight is done manually in India and in most developing countries as well.&nbsp;Trained personnel scout the field and visually inspect&nbsp;the&nbsp;potato foliage. The process is tedious and impractical but researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi are trying to simplify the process with the&nbsp;use of artificial intelligence.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Working&nbsp;in collaboration with the Central Potato Research Institute in Shimla, the team has developed an AI-based computational model&nbsp;for automated disease detection in&nbsp;potato&nbsp;crops using photographs of its leaves.&nbsp;
Publishing in the journal&nbsp;Plant Phenomics,&nbsp;the team says their idea may help prevent financial catastrophe to the farmer and the country&rsquo;s economy.&nbsp;
