The incoming capsule hit the atmosphere at Mach 32, or 32 times the speed of sound, and endured reentry temperatures of 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit (2,760 degrees Celsius) before splashing down west of Mexico's Baja California near Guadalupe Island.
A Navy ship quickly moved in to recover the spacecraft and its silent occupants &mdash; three test dummies rigged with vibration sensors and radiation monitors.
NASA needed a successful splashdown to stay on track for the next Orion flight around the moon, currently targeted for 2024. Four astronauts will make the trip.
That will be followed by a two-person lunar landing as early as 2025.
Astronauts last landed on the moon 50 years ago Sunday.
After touching down on Dec. 11, 1972, Apollo 17's Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt spent three days exploring the lunar surface, the longest stay of the Apollo era. They were the last of the 12 moonwalkers.

NASA's Orion capsule and its test dummies swooped one last time around the moon Monday, flying over a couple Apollo landing sites before heading home. It spent a week in a wide, sweeping lunar orbit.

The three-week test flight has exceeded expectations so far, according to officials. But the biggest challenge still lies ahead: hitting the atmosphere at more than 30 times the speed of sound and surviving the fiery reentry.

Orion will aim for a Pacific splashdown Sunday off San Diego, setting the stage for astronauts on the next flight in a couple years.
The capsule passed within 130 kilometres of the far side of the moon, using the lunar gravity as a slingshot for the 3,80,000-kilometre ride back to Earth. It spent a week in a wide, sweeping lunar orbit.

Once emerging from behind the moon and regaining communication with flight controllers in Houston, Orion beamed back photos of a close-up moon and a crescent Earth &mdash; Earthrise &mdash; in the distance.
&ldquo;Orion now has its sights set on home," said Mission Control commentator Sandra Jones.
The capsule also passed over the landing sites of Apollo 12 and 14. But at 1,900 kilometres up, it was too high to make out the descent stages of the lunar landers or anything else left behind by astronauts more than a half-century ago. During a similar flyover two weeks ago, it was too dark for pictures. This time, it was daylight.
Deputy chief flight director Zebulon Scoville said nearby craters and other geologic features would be visible in any pictures, but little else.
&ldquo;It will be more of a tip of the hat and a historical nod to the past," Scoville told reporters last week.

Apollo 17 rocketed away December 7, 1972, from NASA's Kennedy Space Center, carrying Eugene Cernan, Harrison Schmitt and Ron Evans. Cernan and Schmitt spent three days on the lunar surface, the longest stay of the Apollo era, while Evans orbited the moon. Only Schmitt is still alive.&nbsp;

China will be sending a three-person crew to its under-construction space station on Tuesday, and also announced plans for a manned mission to the Moon amid intensifying competition with the US.
The space crew will stay in orbit for about six months, a period in which the construction of the low-orbit space station is expected to be completed.
The launch will be carried out with a Long March-2F carrier rocket, which will be filled with propellant soon, the China Manned Space Agency said.&nbsp;
After entering the orbit, the Shenzhou-15 spaceship will make a fast, automated rendezvous and dock with the front port of the space station's core module called Tianhe, the CMSA said.
China is launching a host of rockets amid concerns over their falling debris, which is scattered around the world.
The Shenzhou-15 astronauts will return in May next year, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
This is the third manned mission to be launched by China to link up with its space station.
Two batches comprising three astronauts were flown to the space station, on a six months mission each to build the orbiting station.

While one set of astronauts returned, another set of three astronauts is currently based in Tianhe.
According to an earlier announcement by the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASTC) the low-orbit space station construction was expected to be completed this year.
Once ready, China will be the only country to own a space station.
The International Space Station (ISS) of Russia is a collaborative project of several countries.
China Space Station (CSS) is also expected to be a competitor to the ISS built by Russia.
Observers say the CSS may become the sole space station to remain in orbit once the ISS retires in the coming years.
Ji Qiming, assistant to the director of the CMSA, also announced plans to send a manned mission to Moon amid intensifying competition with the US.
The US space agency National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) launched its most powerful rocket on November 16 from Cape Canaveral in Florida.
The objective of the 100m-tall Artemis vehicle was to hurl an unmanned astronaut capsule in the Moon's direction.

The spacecraft, known as Orion, is uncrewed for this particular flight, but its future missions will be manned missions to explore the lunar surface.
China has completed key technology research and validation of the manned lunar exploration project, forming a Moon landing implementation plan with "Chinese characteristics," Ji said.
China has made breakthroughs in the development of the new-generation crewed spaceship, new-generation manned carrier rocket, Moon lander, and Moon landing spacesuit, stepping closer to its moon landing goal, he said.
"China's footsteps in space exploration will not stay only in the low-Earth orbit, and we will surely fly further," Ji said when asked when China will land on the Moon.
"The country is ready to implement the lunar landing project. I believe the dream of landing on the moon will come true in the near future," Ji was quoted as saying by Xinhua.
China in the past successfully launched uncrewed missions to the Moon which included Yutu 2 a rover that sent back pictures of the little-explored far side of the Moon.
China's Chang'e 5 probe returned lunar rocks to Earth in December 2000.
China has also sent a rover to Mars.

The launch came despite technical issues that ate into the two-hour launch window that opened at 1:04 am.
Engineers were forced to pause the flow of liquid hydrogen into the core stage Tuesday night because of a valve leak, though a team sent to the launch pad resolved the problem after an hour.
Later, the space agency reported that a radar site monitoring the rocket's flight path was experiencing problems due to a faulty ethernet switch that had to be replaced.
It was third time lucky for NASA after two previous launch attempts were canceled for technical reasons. Launch was also delayed due to weather setbacks, including Hurricane Ian that battered Florida in late September.

The price tag for this single mission: more than $4 billion. ROCKET POWER The new rocket is shorter and slimmer than the Saturn V rockets that hurled 24 Apollo astronauts to the moon a half-century ago. But it's mightier, packing 4 million kilograms of thrust.
It's called the Space Launch System rocket, SLS for short, but a less clunky name is under discussion, according to Nelson.
Unlike the streamlined Saturn V, the new rocket has a pair of strap-on boosters refashioned from NASA's space shuttles.
The boosters will peel away after two minutes, just like the shuttle boosters did, but won't be fished from the Atlantic for reuse.
The core stage will keep firing before separating and crashing into the Pacific in pieces. Two hours after liftoff, an upper stage will send the capsule, Orion, racing toward the moon.
MOONSHIP NASA's high-tech, automated Orion capsule is named after the constellation, among the night sky's brightest. At 11 feet tall, it's roomier than Apollo's capsule, seating four astronauts instead of three. For this test flight, a full-size dummy in an orange flight suit will occupy the commander's seat, rigged with vibration and acceleration sensors.
Two other mannequins made of material simulating human tissue — heads and female torsos, but no limbs — will measure cosmic radiation, one of the biggest risks of spaceflight. One torso is testing a protective vest from Israel.
Unlike the rocket, Orion has launched before, making two laps around Earth in 2014.
This time, the European Space Agency's service module will be attached for propulsion and solar power via four wings.
FLIGHT PLAN Orion's flight is supposed to last six weeks from its Florida liftoff to Pacific splashdown, twice as long as astronaut trips in order to tax the systems.
It will take nearly a week to reach the moon, 386,000 kilometers away. After whipping closely around the moon, the capsule will enter a distant orbit with a far point of 61,000 kilometers.
That will put Orion 450,000 kilometers from Earth, farther than Apollo. The big test comes at mission's end, as Orion hits the atmosphere at 40,000 kph on its way to a splashdown in the Pacific.
The heat shield uses the same material as the Apollo capsules to withstand reentry temperatures of 2,750 degrees Celsius.
But the advanced design anticipates the faster, hotter returns by future Mars crews.
HITCHHIKERS Besides three test dummies, the flight has a slew of stowaways for deep space research. Ten shoebox-size satellites will pop off once Orion is hurtling toward the moon.
The problem is these so-called CubeSats were installed in the rocket a year ago, and the batteries for half of them couldn't be recharged as the launch kept getting delayed. NASA expects some to fail, given the low-cost, high-risk nature of these mini satellites.
The radiation-measuring CubeSats should be OK. Also in the clear: a solar sail demo targeting an asteroid.
In a back-to-the-future salute, Orion will carry a few slivers of moon rocks collected by Apollo 11's Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin in 1969, and a bolt from one of their rocket engines, salvaged from the sea a decade ago. Aldrin isn't attending the launch, according to NASA, but three of his former colleagues will be there: Apollo 7's Walter Cunningham, Apollo 10's Tom Stafford and Apollo 17's Harrison Schmitt, the next-to-last man to walk on the moon.

MOONSHIP NASA's high-tech, automated Orion capsule is named after the constellation, among the night sky's brightest. At 11 feet tall, it's roomier than Apollo's capsule, seating four astronauts instead of three. For this test flight, a full-size dummy in an orange flight suit will occupy the commander's seat, rigged with vibration and acceleration sensors.
Two other mannequins made of material simulating human tissue &mdash; heads and female torsos, but no limbs &mdash; will measure cosmic radiation, one of the biggest risks of spaceflight. One torso is testing a protective vest from Israel.
Unlike the rocket, Orion has launched before, making two laps around Earth in 2014.
This time, the European Space Agency's service module will be attached for propulsion and solar power via four wings.
FLIGHT PLAN Orion's flight is supposed to last six weeks from its Florida liftoff to Pacific splashdown, twice as long as astronaut trips in order to tax the systems.
It will take nearly a week to reach the moon, 386,000 kilometers away. After whipping closely around the moon, the capsule will enter a distant orbit with a far point of 61,000 kilometers.
That will put Orion 450,000 kilometers from Earth, farther than Apollo. The big test comes at mission's end, as Orion hits the atmosphere at 40,000 kph on its way to a splashdown in the Pacific.
The heat shield uses the same material as the Apollo capsules to withstand reentry temperatures of 2,750 degrees Celsius.
But the advanced design anticipates the faster, hotter returns by future Mars crews.
HITCHHIKERS Besides three test dummies, the flight has a slew of stowaways for deep space research. Ten shoebox-size satellites will pop off once Orion is hurtling toward the moon.
The problem is these so-called CubeSats were installed in the rocket a year ago, and the batteries for half of them couldn't be recharged as the launch kept getting delayed. NASA expects some to fail, given the low-cost, high-risk nature of these mini satellites.
The radiation-measuring CubeSats should be OK. Also in the clear: a solar sail demo targeting an asteroid.
In a back-to-the-future salute, Orion will carry a few slivers of moon rocks collected by Apollo 11's Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin in 1969, and a bolt from one of their rocket engines, salvaged from the sea a decade ago. Aldrin isn't attending the launch, according to NASA, but three of his former colleagues will be there: Apollo 7's Walter Cunningham, Apollo 10's Tom Stafford and Apollo 17's Harrison Schmitt, the next-to-last man to walk on the moon.

Its fuel tanks were to be filled overnight Sunday into Monday with more than three million liters of liquid hydrogen and oxygen.
NASA said there is an 80 percent chance of acceptable weather for a liftoff on time at the beginning of a launch window lasting two hours.
For the first time a woman  -- Charlie Blackwell-Thompson -- will give the final green light for liftoff. Women now account for 30 percent of the staff in the control room; there was just one back with Apollo 11.
Cameras will capture every moment of the 42-day trip and include a selfie of the spacecraft with the Moon and Earth in the background.
The Orion capsule will orbit around the Moon, coming within 60 miles (100 kilometers) at its closest approach and then firing its engines to get to a distance 40,000 miles beyond, a record for a spacecraft rated to carry humans.

Once Orion's performance has been analysed, the module will head back to Earth, taking advantage of the Moon's gravitational pull. One of the challenges of Artemis 1 is to successfully re-enter the Earth's atmosphere at very high speed, to test the performance of its heat shield and to successfully complete the landing in the Pacific.
Nasa will conduct scientific experiments in deep space with several Cubesat or nanosatellites deployed during the mission.
