'Blueprints' by Marcus Du Sautoy explores how mathematics informs and shapes creativity in the arts, using examples ranging from Mozart to Zaha Hadid.

From stone circles to Mozart&rsquo;s obsession with numbers and Zaha Hadid&rsquo;s architecture influenced by mathematical logic and geometry, a new book by Marcus Du Sautoy explores the unexpected yet fascinating connection between mathematics and the arts.
"Blueprints: How Mathematics Shapes Creativity", written by professor of mathematics at the University of Oxford Marcus Du Sautoy and published by HarperCollins, is scheduled to hit the stands on May 16.
It reveals how mathematical structures underpin artistic creativity across time and cultures, and makes an argument that the "logic of mathematics and the emotional world of art are not opposites, but deeply intertwined".
"Many of the artists that we encounter are completely unaware of the mathematics that bubble beneath their craft, while some consciously use it for inspiration. Our instincts might tell us that these two subjects are incompatible forces with nothing in common.
"Blueprints asks us to consider that mathematics and art may not be polar opposites after all. Their complementary relationship spans a vast historical and geographic landscape, from the earliest stone circles to Mozart&rsquo;s obsession with numbers and the radically modern architecture of Zaha Hadid," the publisher said in a statement.
Whether we are searching for meaning in an abstract painting or finding patterns in poetry, the book claims there are blueprints everywhere: "symmetry, prime numbers, the golden ratio and more".
The book, touted to be a bold and philosophical exploration of human creativity, aims to unpack "how we make art, why a creative mindset is vital for discovering new mathematics, and how a fundamental connection to the natural world intrinsically links these two subjects".

"Remembering Ghalib", organised by the Delhi government's art and culture department, Sahitya Kala Parishad, aims to delve into the "world of Ghalib, where words become music, emotions come alive, and literary brilliance transcends time".
The festival, which began Sunday here in the national capital, will take a break on December 25 -- on the occasion of Christmas -- and resume on December 27 and 28.
So, be it paying homage to the great poet with a candlelight procession to his historic Haveli in Ballimaran or staging a musical tribute by inheritor of the illustrious 'Dilli Gharana' Ustad Imran Khan; the cultural festival promises to be a cultural feast for ghazal enthusiasts, poetry lovers, and anyone seeking a glimpse into the genius of one of India's most celebrated poets.
"The event will bring to life the essence of Ghalib's beloved ghazals, crafting a profound work of art that will touch the hearts of all those present. The convergence of Ghalib's soulful poems with the eloquence of Kathak dance is an element that holds great promise.
"I encourage each one of you to be a part of this cultural celebration as we come together to appreciate and honour the rich culture of our artistic heritage. Let us collectively enjoy the graceful amalgamation of Ghalib's poetry and the movements of Kathak dance," said Saurabh Bhardwaj, Delhi's Minister of art, culture, and language, in a statement.
Born in Agra on December 27, 1797, Ghalib, whose real name was Mirza Asadullah Baig Khan, is hailed as one of the finest poets of Urdu and Persian across the world.
He came to Delhi as a married 13-year-old boy and left behind a treasure of quotes, that to this day, continues to be quoted, memorised, narrated and by legion of his fans and admirers.
Marking Ghalib's 226th birth anniversary, the festival on December 27 will showcase veteran Kathak danseuse Uma Sharma's "Shama Har Rang Mein Jalti hai Sahar Hone Tak...", a stunning portrayal of one of Ghalib's most profound ghazals, accompanied by her talented ensemble at the India Islamic Cultural Centre.
The spellbinding performance will be further enhanced by the musical expertise of Ustad Imran Khan, creating a harmonious blend of movement and melody.
A grand mushaira, which would see renowned Urdu poets reciting Ghalib's timeless verses and breathing life into his immortal words, as well as author-diplomat Pavan K Varma's compelling narrative on the man himself will give a befitting conclusion to the festival on December 28.&nbsp;

A recent study done by a research team involving the University of Vienna, the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen and the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics (MPIEA) in Frankfurt, shed light on how online art affects a person's state of mind.
It involved 240 participants who answered questions regarding their state of mind, the pleasure they felt and the meaningfulness of the experience, while viewing an online art exhibition. The result showed positive responses from them.
The study author also stated that 'online art viewing is an untapped source of support for well-being that can be consumed as bite-sized bits of meaning-making and pleasure'.

Her 3D images are so lively that it might take you a few moments to realise that it is body art. Choi uses coloured pencils and brushes to create her artwok.&nbsp;

It's a living, breathing, thinking human being with their own rights. So does a tattoo artist lose rights over their artwork, or do they start owning their customers' arms, or legs, or even faces? The question boggles the mind, but here’s a breakdown of what our laws have to say about the ownership of artwork.   Section 2 of The Copyright Act of 1957, describes artistic work as work that includes engraving, sculpture, painting, or a photograph. Section 13 says that as long as this artwork is fixed to a tangible medium the copyright shall remain.   If we were to put two and two together, then tattoos are clearly engraved and well, human skin is pretty tangible – so tattoos can in fact be copyrighted by the tattoo artist!   We can all agree Stu waking up with his Mike Tyson tattoo in Hangover 2 will go down in the Hall of Movie fame as one of the funniest scenes ever - but you know who wasn't laughing at that scene The film-makers!  That 64 second scene cost Warner Bros way more money than intended.  S. Victor Whitmill, the artist who designed and made Mike Tyson's face tattoo, filed a case against Warner Bros, for not taking his permission to use the tattoo in the movie.  So, did he really have a case or was this a shot in the dark?   For that, we go back to 2003, when Mike Tyson effectively gave up all rights over a design he sports on his face. To be fair, not the weirdest thing he's done. The legendary boxer signed a tattoo release form stating that "all artwork, sketches and drawings related to my tattoo and any photographs of my tattoo are property of Paradox-Studio of Dermagraphics." - So yes, the tattoo artist absolutely had a case! And it’s not just us saying that, before the matter could go to trial, Warner Bros. arrived at an amicable settlement with Whitmill, details of which are not available to the public. So, despite the fact that the wrestler was actually himself a part of the film, the artist had the final say in the matter.   This issue presents a few pitfalls – if a person enjoys complete autonomy and control over their own artwork, this could enter a dangerous territory of controlling the autonomy of your canvas too. Case in point: what if Dwayne Johnson’s tattoo artist suddenly decides he wants his artwork covered up at all times? Would Dwayne Johnson stop taking his shirt off in public? Probably not!   But the law is written in black and white – and not only does the law grant copyright to the tattoo artist, it also grants them something called ‘Moral rights’ or right to Integrity! Which means that if any distortion, mutilation, or alteration of the artwork takes place that is detrimental to the author’s reputation – they can sue.  All in all, this is starting to sound like a very bad deal for the person actually getting the tattoo – is there nothing that protects their rights? Of course, there is!  Take for example removing a tattoo that you don’t want anymore. A very important case comes to mind – that of Architect Raj Rewal who went to the courts to try to stop the demolition of a building he had designed, citing that it will be a blow to his reputation. Here the court exclaimed that which cannot be seen cannot harm the author’s reputation. All in all, despite the laws granting the artist several rights, you can probably still get that ‘I love Dolly’ tattoo removed if you want to!  Coming back to the principal question we began with – what are the rights of the canvas when the canvas is a living breathing person?    In our country, publicity rights are almost synonymous with privacy rights, and have the importance of a fundamental right. So, what are Publicity rights? A person has protection against the misuse of their name, likeness or other markers of identity. Simply put, a person can protect their image from being used unfairly. Despite the fact that publicity rights are not explicitly enshrined in our laws, there have been several cases that involve this principle. And it’s also been held that publicity rights included the ability to allow or prohibit the commercial use of one’s appearance or personality traits.   It’s a double-edged sword to answer this question of copyright vs publicity – because while economic rights in artistic work are provided by law, including the right to transmit the work to the public, reproduce it, issue copies and so on, any effort by the tattoo artist to exercise these rights would be a violation of the individual’s own publicity rights. India is yet to see a case where these two rights butt heads, but it’s a not uncommon in other parts of the world.  That’s not to say that a person can never get the copyright for a tattoo they didn’t design. In fact, Shah Rukh Khan has a copyright for the tattoo design that he sported in the film Don 2! There are some methods to ensure that you get this legal right – granting a license, signing a contract with your designer, relinquishing a copyright are just some such ways.   Art is heartwarming, and powerful – but in this world where there’s art, there’s also big money. Victor Whitmill, the artist who designed and made Mike Tyson's face tattoo, filed a case against Warner Bros, for not taking his permission to use the tattoo in the movie. &nbsp; So, did he really have a case or was this a shot in the dark? &nbsp; &nbsp; For that, we go back to 2003, when Mike Tyson effectively gave up all rights over a design he sports on his face. To be fair, not the weirdest thing he's done. The legendary boxer signed a tattoo release form stating that "all artwork, sketches and drawings related to my tattoo and any photographs of my tattoo are property of Paradox-Studio of Dermagraphics." - So yes, the tattoo artist absolutely had a case! And it&rsquo;s not just us saying that, before the matter could go to trial, Warner Bros. arrived at an amicable settlement with Whitmill, details of which are not available to the public. So, despite the fact that the wrestler was actually himself a part of the film, the artist had the final say in the matter. &nbsp; &nbsp; This issue presents a few pitfalls &ndash; if a person enjoys complete autonomy and control over their own artwork, this could enter a dangerous territory of controlling the autonomy of your canvas too. Case in point: what if Dwayne Johnson&rsquo;s tattoo artist suddenly decides he wants his artwork covered up at all times? Would Dwayne Johnson stop taking his shirt off in public? Probably not! &nbsp; &nbsp; But the law is written in black and white &ndash; and not only does the law grant copyright to the tattoo artist, it also grants them something called &lsquo;Moral rights&rsquo; or right to Integrity! Which means that if any distortion, mutilation, or alteration of the artwork takes place that is detrimental to the author&rsquo;s reputation &ndash; they can sue. &nbsp; All in all, this is starting to sound like a very bad deal for the person actually getting the tattoo &ndash; is there nothing that protects their rights? Of course, there is! &nbsp; Take for example removing a tattoo that you don&rsquo;t want anymore. A very important case comes to mind &ndash; that of Architect Raj Rewal who went to the courts to try to stop the demolition of a building he had designed, citing that it will be a blow to his reputation. Here the court exclaimed that which cannot be seen cannot harm the author&rsquo;s reputation. All in all, despite the laws granting the artist several rights, you can probably still get that &lsquo;I love Dolly&rsquo; tattoo removed if you want to! &nbsp; Coming back to the principal question we began with &ndash; what are the rights of the canvas when the canvas is a living breathing person? &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; In our country, publicity rights are almost synonymous with privacy rights, and have the importance of a fundamental right. So, what are Publicity rights? A person has protection against the misuse of their name, likeness or other markers of identity. Simply put, a person can protect their image from being used unfairly. Despite the fact that publicity rights are not explicitly enshrined in our laws, there have been several cases that involve this principle. And it&rsquo;s also been held that publicity rights included the ability to allow or prohibit the commercial use of one&rsquo;s appearance or personality traits. &nbsp; &nbsp; It&rsquo;s a double-edged sword to answer this question of copyright vs publicity &ndash; because while economic rights in artistic work are provided by law, including the right to transmit the work to the public, reproduce it, issue copies and so on, any effort by the tattoo artist to exercise these rights would be a violation of the individual&rsquo;s own publicity rights. India is yet to see a case where these two rights butt heads, but it&rsquo;s a not uncommon in other parts of the world. &nbsp; That&rsquo;s not to say that a person can never get the copyright for a tattoo they didn&rsquo;t design. In fact, Shah Rukh Khan has a copyright for the tattoo design that he sported in the film Don 2! There are some methods to ensure that you get this legal right &ndash; granting a license, signing a contract with your designer, relinquishing a copyright are just some such ways. &nbsp; &nbsp; Art is heartwarming, and powerful &ndash; but in this world where there&rsquo;s art, there&rsquo;s also big money. This year the topic of the competition was 'how India will look like in the next 25 years' and 1,15,000 children from first to tenth grades, participated from all across India. Shlok Mukherjee's painting was declared the winner among them and has been made as doodle for Google&rsquo;s home page.&nbsp;
Shlok's painting shows that in the next 25 years, scientists in India will make eco-friendly robots. India will make many trips to space and the nation will excel in the field of Yoga and Ayurveda.&nbsp;

Imagine living in a house covered with doodles of things you like. Would it be fascinating or would it give you a migraine? Well, whatever it is for you, it is surely a dream come true for artist Sam Cox, popularly known as Mr. Doodle.&nbsp;
Recently, Cox completed his fascinating project where he covered his $1.5 million Ken home with doodles. It is reported that it took him around 2 years to complete this art.
Every inch of his house; from ceilings to toasters, is covered with black and white doodles in a cartoonish style.&nbsp;
Mr. Doodle said that this project is his best piece of work. &nbsp;According to Cox, it took around 900 litres of white paint, 401 cans of black spray paint for the exterior, 286 bottles of black drawing paint for the interior and 2,296 pen nibs to carry out the art.
In one of his posts, Cox wrote that he wanted to live in a property completely covered in the characters created by himself.&nbsp;
Every room in this doodle house has a theme. The bedroom has embellished artwork that depicts dreams and the bathroom has sea-themed tiles with waves flowing in every corner of the loo. The stairs of his house have illustrations of heaven and hell, whereas the corridor has doodles of Noah's Ark. Cox said that he did not conceptualise any of his illustrations.&nbsp;

The man says he stumbled upon it while planting an olive tree last spring and quietly excavated it over several months with his son.
Experts say the ornate mosaic is one of the greatest archaeological treasures ever found in Gaza.
The discovery has set off excitement among archaeologists, and the territory's Hamas rulers are planning a major announcement in the coming days.
But it is also drawing calls for better protection of Gaza’s antiquities, a fragile collection of sites threatened by a lack of awareness and resources as well as the constant risk of conflict between Israel and local Palestinian militants.
The mosaic was uncovered just a kilometer (half mile) from the Israeli border.
The floor, boasting 17 iconographies of beasts and birds, is well-preserved and its colors are bright.
The owner of the land, who refused to be identified before the official announcement, has covered the unearthed portion of the mosaic floor with tin sheets.
He said he hopes to receive compensation for protecting the unique discovery on his property.
The patch of land holding the mosaic is about 500 square meters (5,400 square feet) and three dug-out spots reveal glimpses of the mosaic.
The largest of the holes in the ground, about 2 meters by 3 meters (6 feet by 9 feet), has the 17 drawings of animals.
The other two show intricate patterns of tiles.
Roots of an old olive tree have damaged parts of the mosaic, which appears to be about 23 square meters (250 square feet) altogether in size.
