Army Hospital (Research &amp; Referral) in Delhi Cantt has achieved a groundbreaking milestone by performing India's first-ever Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) implantation using the HeartMate 3 device at a government institution. This marks a historic achievement for the Armed Forces Medical Services as well. The procedure was successfully carried out on a 49-year-old woman, the wife of an Armed Forces veteran, who had been on the heart transplant waiting list for over two years.
The LVAD, commonly referred to as a 'mechanical heart,' is a critical life-saving device for patients suffering from end-stage heart failure, according to a press release from the Ministry of Defence. The HeartMate 3 LVAD uses state-of-the-art technology to enhance heart function, offering renewed hope for patients with severe cardiac conditions.
At present, the patient is recovering well under close medical supervision, demonstrating the success of the collaborative effort. This achievement highlights Army Hospital's dedication to medical excellence and reinforces its role as a leader in providing advanced medical care, the release noted.

There are reportedly 30 cases of mucormycosis or black fungus among serving soldiers and military veterans at Delhi's two premier defence hospitals, the Army R&amp;R and Army Base Hospital. The hospitals are struggling without adequate supplies of the life-saving drug Amphotericin B. According to a report by India Today, the two hospitals have less than half of the amount required to treat the patients at hand.
An Army doctor at the Research &amp; Referral hospital said that "many lives, including those of serving frontline soldiers, are at risk since the hospital is still awaiting the bare minimum consignment to fight increasing black fungus cases.&rsquo;
A senior Ministry of Defence officer said the government had been apprised of the shortage, and that efforts were being made to meet the Amphotericin B requirement on priority.

A seven-day state mourning was announced by the Centre after former president Pranab Mukherjee died at a Delhi hospital on Monday. During the period of state mourning, the national flag will fly at half-mast at all buildings throughout the country wherever it is flown regularly and there will be no official entertainment.&nbsp;Mukherjee had developed a lung infection and renal dysfunction after he underwent surgery to remove a clot in his brain as he fell down at his Rajaji Marg residence in Delhi. He was since then admitted to the Army Hospital where he was put on ventilator support after the surgery. He had also tested positive for the coronavirus disease prior to the surgery on August 10.&nbsp;
