Sports Minister Anurag Thakur dismissed the idea that the funds for hosting the 2036 Olympics would be better allocated to welfare schemes.

Bullish about India's chances of securing the 2036 Olympic hosting rights, Sports Minister Anurag Thakur said the country has the wherewithal to compete with other contenders in the bidding war and rejected criticism that the money would be better spent on welfare schemes.
The host of the Games will be decided by the International Olympic Committee's future host commission not before 2026 or 2027 as the IOC is due to elect a new president next year. India's ambitious interest has found support from current IOC head Thomas Bach, who believes the country has a "strong case".
"We are fully prepared. Very easily we can," Thakur asserted in an interview to PTI when asked whether India has what it takes to withstand the aggressive bidding war that is likely to ensue given that several countries like Poland, Indonesia, Mexico, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia have either declared interest or are likely to join the race.
"Last year our capital expenditure was Rs 10 lakh crore, and a year before, it was Rs 7.5 lakh crore. This year it is Rs 11,11,111 crore. Sports infrastructure is hardly Rs 5,000 crore. Even if it goes up to Rs 20,000 crore, it can be done," he said down-playing the cost factor.
The government of India has started its preparations and it wants to make its case stronger by winning the hosting rights of the 2030 Youth Olympics. Plans are afoot to prepare Ahmedabad as the host city for both the showpieces.
Thakur, who took over the sports ministry from Kiren Rijiju in 2021, will be contesting the ongoing Lok Sabha polls from his family bastion Hamirpur in Himachal Pradesh.
The 49-year-old said his confidence in India's bid comes from the rapid pace of growth in the country. He went on to list his government's achievements in infrastructure development.
"Today's India is ambitious and aspirational. Our road, rail infrastructure is growing by the day. We had 74 airports in 2014 and today we have 150. We had 96,000km of road and now we have 1,50,000km. Rural roads were 3,20,000km and now it is 7,06,000km.
"Railway lines have doubled to 40,000km. There are 706 medical colleges. We are also almost fully electrified There are now 1117 universities, up from 740. We had 16 IITs and the number has gone up to 24. We have 24 AIIMS, up from earlier seven.
"Look at these statistics. What Congress could not do in 60 years, Mr Modi has done in 10 years, so imagine where India would be by 2036," he pointed out.
The organisers of the Rio Games spent about USD 11.1 billion in conducting the 2016 edition while Tokyo ended up spending USD 12.9 billion for the 2020 Games.
When Thakur was asked about the view that the money can be better-utilised on welfare schemes, he said hosting the Games will have its own benefits for the poor and marginalised.

"The Modi government is already doing a lot for the poor. It has already lifted 25 crore from multi dimensional poverty line. More facilities will be given to them to make them prosperous." The minister also expressed high hopes from the country's athletes for the upcoming Paris Games in July-August, saying, "We should get medals in double digits." "The way we have prepared, I believe we should get medals in double digits," he reiterated when asked whether India would be able to match or better its best ever tally of seven achieved in the Tokyo edition.
Thakur said a part of the credit for India's improving sporting performances goes to the government's flagship Khelo India initiative, which was launched in 2017 and gets a lion's share of budgetary allocation.
"Pehle kehte the padhoge likhoge banoge nawab, aur kheloge kudoge toh banoge kharab. Ab kehte hain padhoge likhoge banoge nawab, aur kheloge kudoge toh banoge laajawab (The old saying that getting into sports would spoil you has now been rephrased to say that playing sports will make you matchless)," he said.
"And Khelo India has created this pro sports environment. People now see career for their children in sports. The sports budget has gone up by three times. There are 1000 Khelo India centres now.
"There are 23 Centres of Excellence. TOPS scheme takes care of boarding lodging and training of athletes in the country as well as abroad. Rs 6 lakh is given as out of pocket allowance," he added.
However, Thakur, who is also a minister for Information and Broadcasting, is also well aware of the challenges facing Indian sports, a major one being doping. India is among the top dope offenders in the world.
The country was declared the second worst in a 10-year World Anti Doping Agency global study of dope violations by minors. Also, India registered the highest percentage of failed dope tests among countries which tested more than 2,000 samples in the 2022 Testing Figures.
Thakur put the onus on coaches and national federations to steer the athletes towards the correct path.
"We test way more now, more samples are tested and that is why there are more positive tests. Both off-line and online exposure and awareness has been carried out.
"Federations and coaches have to change their mindset. If they look at shortcuts for winning medals, it will only causes harm, athletes can lose their entire careers. They will have to look at proper ways," he asserted.

"Sports is a state subject but still the central government is keen to look at the upliftment of sports in the country. We have to spend a lot of money on infrastructure and coaches," Thakur said reacting to lack of trainers, coaches and infrastructure at the state level.
"We are collaborating with state governments and asked them to identify three key sports so that we have a roadmap and information on which state will promote hockey, boxing and athletics etc.
"I have already started consolidating our NCOEs and in association with the national sports federations, will greater emphasis on producing good coaches," he added.
The Sports Authority of India established 23 NCOEs across the country to impart specialised training to promising athletes by providing state of the art infrastructure and playing facilities, sports science backup, individualised diet prescribed by trained nutritionists and overall supervision under the best coaches, qualified support staff and High Performance Directors.

Arunachal Pradesh's Wushu athletes have reportedly been unable to travel to China for the ongoing Asian Games in Hangzhou. The trio of Nyeman Wangsu, Onilu Tega and Mepung Lamgu were forced to stay back in Delhi even though the other squad members did not suffer any issues and were able to travel to Hangzhou.&nbsp;
As per reports, the Hangzhou Asian Games Organising Committee has given the accreditation cards to the three athletes but their cards could not be downloaded for validation. Days after a report by The Times of India stated that India was planning to bid for the 2026 Commonwealth Games following Australia's departure as host, Sports Minister Anurag Thakur has instead asserted India's plans to host the Olympics. &nbsp; Responding to a query by news agency PTI on whether India is thinking about hosting the 2026 CWG, Thakur said, 'India will organise the Olympics in future.' He was attending the opening ceremony of the Asian Junior and Youth Weightlifting Championships on July 27, where he spoke to reporters about India's intentions to host the quadrennial event.&nbsp; 'We are working in that direction and when the right time comes we will give you the good news. India wants to host the Olympics,' Thakur added.&nbsp; Expressing the government's wishes, the Minister said, 'It wants India to host good, big tournaments in different sports. The Sports Ministry has affirmed that the PoSH Act, 2013 (Sexual Harassment at Workplace) applies to all National Sports Federations (NSFs), and in the last three years, only four NSFs have reported cases related to sexual harassment. Sports Minister Anurag Thakur made this revelation during a written response in Rajya Sabha.
Thakur wrote, &ldquo;Prohibition and Redressal) (PoSH) Act, 2013 is applicable to all National Sports Federations (NSFs), as applicable to any entity defined in the Act. The NSFs are bound to take action in terms of the extant legal provisions in the cases of sexual harassment reported to them. The Ministry has also issued instructions to all NSFs from time-to-time on the prevention of sexual harassment in sports.&rdquo;
During the last three years, and the current year, only four NSFs - wrestling, cycling, sailing, and gymnastics, have reported complaints of sexual harassment.
Wrestling, in particular, has been in the news recently due to the sexual harassment charges against former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

The BJP on Friday suggested that a conspiracy within the Congress might have played a role in its leaders not approaching a higher court for relief for Rahul Gandhi after his conviction as it had done so in the case of Pawan Khera within hours of the Assam Police arresting him.
Union ministers Dharmendra Pradhan and Anurag Thakur also hit out at the Congress over its criticism of the court judgment convicting Gandhi and said the Nehru-Gandhi family suffers from "feudal mindset" and a "sense of entitlement" as its members believed in a separate set of laws and democratic system for themselves.
"Law is equal for everyone," Pradhan told reporters at a press conference, accusing Gandhi of "abusing" backward castes with his "thieves" jibe aimed at "Modi surname".
Hitting back at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge for his claim that Gandhi has been punished for speaking the truth on the Adani-Hindenburg issue, he asked if abusing deprived and backward communities means speaking the truth.
Both the BJP leaders asserted that Gandhi's disqualification was a natural outcome of the law as the Supreme Court has made it clear that a lawmaker stands disqualified from the time of his conviction. The Lok Sabha speaker has only confirmed this legal position, they said.
The Lok Sabha Secretariat disqualified Gandhi as MP from Wayanad in Kerala a day after a Surat court convicted him in a 2019 criminal defamation case for his remark "How come all thieves have Modi as the common surname?" Following his disqualification, he would not be able to contest elections for eight years unless a higher court stays his conviction and sentence.

Taking a tough stand on complaints against content on OTT platforms, Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur on Sunday said vulgarity and abusive language was not acceptable in the name of creativity.
Addressing a press conference in Nagpur, Thakur said the government had taken a serious view on complaints of vulgarity and abusive language in content on OTT platforms and will not hesitate to take tough action to stop this trend.
"These platforms were given freedom for creativity and not for obscenity and when one crosses the limit, then hurling abuses in the name of creativity cannot be accepted at all," Thakur said.
"If there is a need to change the rules, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting will not hesitate. It will take tough action to stop vulgarity and abusive language," the minister said.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur on Friday accused The New York Times of "spreading lies" about India, describing an opinion piece published in it on the freedom of press in Kashmir as "mischievous and fictitious".
"New York Times had long back dropped all pretensions of neutrality while publishing anything about India. NYT's so-called opinion piece on freedom of press in Kashmir is mischievous and fictitious, published with a sole motive to spread a propaganda about India and its democratic institutions and values," Thakur said on Twitter.
"This is in continuation with what NYT and a few other link-minded foreign media have been spreading lies about India and our democratically elected Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modiji. Such lies can't last long," the minister said.
The strong rebuttal by Thakur came after the US-based newspaper published an opinion piece on alleged curbs on information flow in Kashmir.
"Some foreign media nourishing a grudge against India and our Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi have long been systematically trying to peddle lies about our democracy and pluralistic society," Thakur said.
He said freedom of press in India is as sacrosanct as other fundamental rights.
"Democracy in India and We the people are very mature and we don't need to learn grammar of democracy from such agenda-driven media," he said.
Thakur said the "blatant lies" spread by NYT about press freedom in Kashmir is condemnable.
"Indians will not allow such mindsets to run their decisive agenda on India soil," the minister said.

The MC Mary Kom-led panel that was earlier asked to submit its report in 4 weeks, has been given another 2-week extension and will now submit its report by March 9.&nbsp;
The committee responsible for the day-to-day functioning of WFI was formed after a sit-in protest by top Indian wrestlers, including Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia &amp; Sakshi Malik, who were demanding the removal of Singh as the federation's president.
Since the formation of the committee, the top Indian wrestlers have not competed at the international meets, missing the Ranking Series events in Zagreb and Alexandria.
Meanwhile, wrestling's governing body UWW has reportedly taken away the hosting rights of the Asian Championship from India, citing a complaint from the top wrestlers.&nbsp;

Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur on Tuesday said no one was above the law and the Income Tax department would share details about the survey it had carried out at the offices of BBC in New Delhi and Mumbai.
"No one can be above the law of the country," Thakur told reporters in Kalyan when asked about the Income Tax surveys on the BBC offices in India.
He said the Income Tax Department conducted surveys from time to time wherever there were some irregularities.
"When the surveys are over, it issues a press note or holds a press briefing to share information. I believe that when the I-T Department will complete its survey, it will share details with you," Thakur said.
The Income Tax department on Tuesday conducted survey operations at the BBC offices in Delhi and Mumbai as part of an investigation into alleged tax evasion.
The UK-based British public broadcaster said that it was "fully cooperating" with the authorities and hoped that the situation will be resolved "as soon as possible".

As per reports, the protesting wrestlers consider the London Olympics bronze medallist Yogeshwar Dutt, one of the members of the committee, close to the WFI president.
Wrestler Bajrang Punia, however, later clarified that while the grapplers wanted a member of their choice on the committee, they don't have an issue with Yogeshwar. They expected to be consulted before the members were finalised, he added.

The fresh offensive from grapplers Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik hasn&rsquo;t gone down well with the Sports Ministry, given three of the five member picks of the oversight committee were based on wrestlers' suggestions.
According to a Times of India report, Ministry sources claim that during the first round of discussions with Sports Minister Anurag Thakur, wrestlers themselves suggested the names of Mary Kom, SAI's former executive director (teams) Radhica Sreeman and ex-TOPS CEO Rajesh Rajagopalan.
The report further states that the wrestlers weren't happy with the choice of London Olympics Bronze medallist Yogeshwar Dutt, who is also part of the five-member Oversight Committee.
