Filmmaker Anurag Basu says his growth as a storyteller mirrors the evolution he has witnessed in his personal life where women have been a major source of inspiration.
Over a career spanning more than two decades, Basu has established himself as a versatile director, exploring various genres ranging from the erotic thriller "Murder" and the romantic crime drama "Gangster" to deeply moving stories like "Barfi!" and "Kites", and even ensemble anthologies such as "Life in a... Metro" and "Ludo".
"Movies reflect the phase you are going through in your life. Initially, my films were a little erotic when I was young. After that, I grew older, had a family, matured, and then began to understand the depth of relationships in a much better way. Those depths then began to be reflected in films,&rdquo; Basu told PTI in an interview.
&ldquo;I seek inspiration from everybody, from all the women in my life, like the women who raised me, who loved me, and those who outsmarted me. So, all the stories came from there,&rdquo; he said.
Basu received critical acclaim for his 2007 movie &ldquo;Life in a&hellip; Metro&rdquo;, an anthology exploring stories of love, ambition, and heartbreak in the fast-paced urban landscape of Mumbai.
He is now coming out with the movie's follow-up "Metro&hellip;In Dino&rdquo;, which follows the bittersweet relationships of four couples in four different cities.
The director said when he made "Life in a... Metro", he thought of it as a standalone movie as he had no storyline for a follow-up.
&ldquo;While making &lsquo;Ludo&rsquo;, this idea came to me. Before that, I attempted once or twice to write the film, but it didn't happen. But this time, it came along," he said.
&ldquo;Metro&hellip;In Dino&rdquo; is part of Basu's hyperlink trilogy, which began with &ldquo;Life in a...Metro&rdquo; in 2007 and continued with &ldquo;Ludo&rdquo; in 2020. All three movies weave together interrelated tales that encapsulate the diversity of love.
&ldquo;Now the trilogy is complete, and I don&rsquo;t want to do it again. I don't want to do a hyperlink film. I don't want to do it for the next 2-3 films,&rdquo; the 55-year-old director explained.
While writing interlinked stories is a big challenge, shooting the movie was a lot of fun, Basu added.
"We have to write four stories, which is equal to writing four films. The audience will see it from the perspective of four stories. For me, it's a movie, and it should have a graph of up and down and everything. In &lsquo;Ludo&rsquo;, you felt like you were watching one movie.
"It was the same case with the old &lsquo;Metro&rsquo; film. So, achieving that ease is a little difficult. You don't want to get lost in four stories, and wanting to root for all the characters and be invested in all the characters at the same time is a very tough job,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;Metro&hellip;In Dino&rdquo; features a star-studded cast of Anupam Kher, Neena Gupta, Pankaj Tripathi, Konkana Sen Sharma, Ali Fazal, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Aditya Roy Kapur, and Sara Ali Khan.
For Basu, he "hit the jackpot" with the star cast of this film.
&ldquo;All my first choices said yes. I was lucky because there was no option B. They trusted me. So, it was a dream cast. If it wasn't there, I don't know what I would have done. Now, when I see the film, I can't see anybody else playing their character as they have played,&rdquo; he added.
Basu has already begun work on his next, a musical romantic drama that was initially titled &ldquo;Aashiqui 3&rdquo;. The film, which features Kartik Aaryan and South sensation Sreeleela, is poised for its theatrical release on Diwali.
&ldquo;I don't know if it's going to be called &lsquo;Aashiqui 3&rsquo;. There was a story which I was making, and I didn't write a story for &lsquo;Aashiqui 3&rsquo;. I was going to make this film, no matter what the title was. As of now, I don't know what the title will be. It would be right to say untitled now,&rdquo; the director said.
Basu is equally thrilled about his long-cherished project: a biopic on the legendary Kishore Kumar, which he had announced over a decade ago. Reports have claimed that superstar Aamir Khan will feature in the movie but Basu refused to comment on the speculation.
&ldquo;I've started work on it at full speed. I&rsquo;ll start it (filming) soon. The writing work and all is done, everything is done,&rdquo; Basu said.

Filmmaker Anurag Basu has announced his next directorial venture &lsquo;The Black Tiger&rsquo;, a biopic on Indian spy Ravindra Kaushik. The director, who has helmed films like &lsquo;Life in a&hellip; Metro&rsquo;, &lsquo;Gangster&rsquo;, &lsquo;Barfi!&rsquo;, and &lsquo;Ludo&rsquo;, said stories of unsung heroes like Kaushik must be shared with people.
In a statement, Anurag Basu said, &lsquo;Ravindra Kaushik&rsquo;s story is that of courage and valour. At the young age of 20 years, he played a pivotal role in many national and international security matters of the &rsquo;70s and &rsquo;80s that went on to define India&rsquo;s as well as South Asia&rsquo;s geopolitical character. So much of our history is either hidden or forgotten. We ought to recognise and learn about this unsung hero.&rsquo;
According to the press release, Ravinder Kaushik was 20 when he first went undercover for Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), India&rsquo;s foreign intelligence agency. He is considered as India&rsquo;s best spy so far for his success in penetrating the highest ranks of the Pakistani Army, thereby receiving the moniker &lsquo;The Black Tiger&rsquo; from Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India.
His timely reporting of critical information ensured that Indian Security Forces, between 1974 to 1983, were constantly steps ahead of any move Pakistan was planning to make, stated the release.
Ravinder Kaushik&rsquo;s family members have given their consent to the biopic and are helping the makers by sharing information in addition to the story from their lens. &lsquo;The Black Tiger&rsquo; is produced by Anurag Basu, R Vivek, Asvin Srivatsangam and Divay Dhamija.

Bhushan Kumar and director Anurag Basu have joined hands for an upcoming anthology film &lsquo;Metro&hellip; In Dino'. The film will feature an ensemble cast of Aditya Roy Kapur, Sara Ali Khan, Anupam Kher, Neena Gupta, Pankaj Tripathi, Konkona Sen Sharma, Ali Fazal, and Fatima Sana Shaikh. The music of the film will be composed by Pritam.
Talking about the film and his collaboration with Anurag Basu, Producer Bhushan Kumar said 'Working with Anurag dada has always been a treat! Stitching a story out of parallel lives together in a film with a contemporary twist, none better than dada could helm this ship. We are elated to join hands with him yet again for 'Metro... In Dino'.
Director Anurag Basu also briefed about the movie and said that 'Metro...In Dino' is a tale of the people and for the people. He further added that he has been working on the film for quite a while and the audience will get to see a fresh and relevant film.
The film is a sequel to the 2007 movie 'Life in a... Metro', directed by Basu himself.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh also put out the statement on social media, saying that search for leading lady is on.  Now, Gulshan Devaiah, who is best known for featuring in films such as ‘Hunterrr’, ‘Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota’, and ‘A Death In The Gunj’, has expressed his desire to play the ‘leading lady’ in the film. He retweeted the Taran Adarsh’s tweet and said, ‘I offer myself for the position of “Leading Lady” Dhamaka kardenge dono bhai milke pichchar mey likhk ke le loh.’  In a recent interview with Hindustan Times, the actor opened up on his tweet and said that his offer is serious and is still open. ‘Out of the box casting, no one will see it coming and everyone will be thoroughly entertained. Maan nahi raha koi meri baat (no one is listening to me), I am ready. I am fine with playing a gay man but here I am offering myself to play a leading lady. Kartik is the leading man, Gulshan Devaiah should be his leading lady. Isn’t it a wonderful challenge? Being a straight guy, how do I convincingly play a pretty leading lady! It’s a joke. Actor Kartik Aaryan is all set to be starred in Anurag Basu’s directorial Aashiqui 3. Playing the lead role in a musical love story like Aashiqui 3, Kartik termed the movie as a “dream come true” moment for him. He further said that he grew up being inspired by the first part of Aashiqui.     In an interview with Variety, Kartik in a statement said, “The timeless classic Aashiqui is something I grew up watching and working on Aashiqui 3 is like a dream come true. Producer Mukesh Bhatt of Vishesh Films said Aashiqui 3 will “celebrate love like never before.”     T-Series MD and producer Bhushan Kumar said it was the perfect time to revive the beloved franchise, who still has a place in everyone's heart.    The female actor has not been announced yet.     Kartik Aaryan will next be seen in Shehzada. He also has Satyaprem Ki Katha, Captain India and Freddy in the pipeline.
