The Congress office in Uttar Pradesh's Amethi was attacked and several cars parked outside the office were vandalised on May 5 night. While the police said that they were probing the matter, the Congress blamed the Bharatiya Janata Party for the attack, claiming that some Congress workers also sustained injuries.&nbsp;

Ending months of suspense, Congress fielded Gandhi loyalist Kishori Lal Sharma against BJP's MP Smriti Irani from the Amethi constituency. Rahul Gandhi, on the other hand, has been fielded from Raebareli, a seat once represented by his mother Sonia Gandhi, is grandmother Indira Gandhi and his grandfather Feroze Gandhi in the past.
Hailing from Ludhiana in Punjab, Sharma, a confidante of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, has been working for the family for more than four decades.
The only time the Congress did not represent Rae Bareli was in the wake of the Emergency in 1977 when Janata Party's Raj Narain defeated Indira Gandhi, who was then the prime minister. And the BJP's Ashoke Singh won in 1996 and 1998.
Sonia Gandhi won from Rae Bareli four times between 2004 and 2019, though her winning margins had begun dwindling now.
Gandhi had lost from the adjoining Amethi constituency to BJP&rsquo;s Smriti Irani in 2019, but won from "safe" Wayanad in Kerala &ndash; a seat he is contesting this time as well.
Polling in both parliamentary constituencies is on May 20.

Battleground Amethi. Once a bastion of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty, now virtually abandoned by Congress' first family. Sitting Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Smriti Irani, now, has a 'home' ground advantage.
The Lok Sabha constituency covers the entire Amethi district of Uttar Pradesh.
A number of Gandhi family members &mdash; Sanjay, Rajiv, Sonia and Rahul &mdash; have been elected to the Parliament from this heartland seat. Rahul Gandhi himself represented the constituency for three straight terms from 2004, only to lose &mdash; by a close margin of 55,000 votes &mdash; to Irani in 2019.
For the first time since 1999, Congress has fielded a non-Gandhi from Amethi, party loyalist Kishori Lal Sharma.
KL Sharma is supposed to be an outsider, who hails from Ludhiana, but has been instrumental to the party's local unit for almost four decades.&nbsp;
He is said to have moved to Amethi in 1987, as a close aide of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, at a time when he represented the seat. Reports suggest he played a crucial role in helping Sonia get elected from Amethi in 1999.
While continuing to manage party affairs in the district during Rahul's three terms, Sharma is said to have concentrated on Raebareli as Sonia&rsquo;s manager in recent years.
Will Sharma be able to capitalise on his on-ground presence and familiarity with the voters disgruntled with inflation and unemployment? Reports suggest Priyanka Gandhi may lead the campaign to make up for Rahul's absence from the district since his defeat in 2019. But the Congress has a lot of ground to cover.
They're up against Irani, a union minister,&nbsp;who has literally set up home base in Amethi.
She kicked off her reelection bid last month with the gruh pravesh&nbsp;of her new house in the district. Now, Irani is not just the candidate, but also a voter from the seat.
The campaign team has plans for Irani to cover the entire constituency twice before Amethi goes to polls in phase 5 (May 20) of the Parliamentary elections. The BJP's political machinery has been at work on ground for over a month, and has left no stone unturned.
Irani was quick to taunt Rahul for running 'scared' and fielding a 'proxy' from the seat. "Gandhi family not contesting from Amethi in itself is an indication that Congress has accepted defeat even before elections," she said.
Will the narrative that the Gandhis are scared of a rematch and have abandoned ship ensure a walkover for Irani? Or will the Gandhi loyalist manage to put up a fight, and wrest the erstwhile fortress back for Congress?
The results will be declared after all seven phases of the Lok Sabha elections on June 4.

Kishori Lal Sharma hails from Ludhiana and has been associated with Congress party for over four decades. In 1983, he came to Amethi and since then, he has been working for the constituency.&nbsp;
He was a close aide of Rajiv Gandhi. After the assassination of Rajiv, his ties grew stronger with the Gandhi family. According to reports, he even played a crucial role in helping Sonia Gandhi secure a seat from Amethi in 1999.&nbsp;
KL Sharma will file his nomination papers on May 3.&nbsp;

Amethi, one of the 80 Lok Sabha constituencies of Uttar Pradesh, was a Congress stronghold. However, Rahul Gandhi faced a major defeat in 2019 that even led him to write a four-page letter in which he explained his decision to resign as party president.&nbsp;
He took responsibility for the loss of the 2019 polls but also said others will have to be made accountable for the failure of 2019. In his letter, he mentioned, "Rebuilding the party requires hard decisions and numerous people will have to be made accountable for the failure of 2019. It would be unjust to hold others accountable but ignore my own responsibility as president of the party."
Rajiv Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi himself have been elected from this seat. Rahul was elected to Lok Sabha from this seat from 2004 to 2014. However, in 2019, he lost the polls to BJP's Smriti Irani by over 55,000 votes.&nbsp;
Now, the 2024 Lok Sabha polls are here but the Congress has not yet announced its candidate from Amethi. This seat will go to the polls in the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections on May 20. The last day for filing nominations for the seats in the third phase is May 3.&nbsp;
There is a suspense looming over the candidate of Congress and the main question that has been in people's minds is whether Rahul Gandhi will contest from this seat.&nbsp;
As the Congress is maintaining the suspense until the eleventh hour, let's understand the challenges that Rahul Gandhi is set to face, if he contests from this seat.
According to reports, he has been absent from Amethi and visited this seat quite less, leaving the field clear for Smriti Irani.&nbsp;
On April 29, the Congress party&rsquo;s Central Election Committee (CEC) reportedly authorised party chief Mallikarjun Kharge to decide the candidates for the two constituencies. The Uttar Pradesh Congress unit has urged the top party leadership to field Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra from the two seats. But reports suggest, Gandhi's family, is not keen.&nbsp;
These are not the only speculations as there are reports that suggest that Rahul Gandhi can contest from Raebareli and leave Amethi for Priyanka Gandhi so that there is a woman pitted against a woman from this seat.&nbsp;
So far, there has been no confirmation from Congress whether Rahul will contest from his former constituency which elected him to the Lok Sabha thrice, in 2004, 2009, and 2014.&nbsp;

While the Congress is yet to announce its candidate from Amethi in Uttar Pradesh, sitting BJP MP Smriti Irani has taken a swipe at Rahul Gandhi and Robert Vadra. Irani claimed that she has done more work in five years in the region than Rahul Gandhi did in 15 years. &nbsp; Irani&rsquo;s remark came after Robert Vadra extended a hint that he may contest from Amethi seat. &nbsp; "Jijaji ki nazar hai, saale sahab kya karenge. (brother-in-law is eyeing the seat, what will he (Gandhi) do?) There was a time when people travelling in buses would leave their handkerchief to mark their seat so that no one sits on it. Rahul Gandhi will also come to mark his seat with a handkerchief because his brother-in-law is eyeing this seat," she told a gathering in Amethi.&nbsp; "Has this ever happened? Just 27 days left for election, but Congress has not announced its candidate. Such arrogance. What could I do in five years, Rahul Gandhi could not do in 15," Irani added.

Robert Vadra, the husband of Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi, has expressed his interest in contesting the forthcoming general elections from the Gandhi family's former bastion, the Amethi constituency.
The Uttar Pradesh region was formerly represented by Rahul Gandhi before he was defeated by the current BJP MP Smriti Irani.
In an interview to ANI news agenncy, Vadra took potshots at Irani saying that "the person who was elected last time is only concerned with attacking the Gandhi family, and not with ensuring the development of the area and well-being of its people".
"For years, the Gandhi family worked hard in Rae Bareli, Amethi and Sultanpur...It seems that the Amethi people have realised their mistake by electing Smriti Irani and ousting Rahul Gandhi. They now want a Gandhi family member to represent them. And they expect me to represent them if I decide to take the political plunge. I remember, my first political campaign with Priyanka was in Amethi in 1999," Robert Vadra said.
The Congress party is yet to declare a candidate for Amethi. The fifth phase of voting in Amethi is scheduled for May 20.

On 27 August 2022, Amethi MP Smriti Irani was given a complaint letter by Karunesh, a resident of Poore Pahalwan village. The plaintiff claimed that after his father's death, his mother was entitled to pension, but lekhpal Deepak was not doing verification work. Due to this, the complainant's mother was not getting pension.
Subsequently, minister Irani phoned the lekhpal, but he didn't recognise her, according to news agency PTI. Then, the chief development officer (CDO) of Amethi Ankur Lathar took the phone, and asked the lekhpal to meet him at his office. The lekhpal is being probed for laxity, and not discharging his duties.

A battery of BJP leaders charged on Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday over his comments on South politics being better than that of the North. Led by BJP chief JP Nadda, a number of ministers attacked the Wayanad MP for "trying to divide" India. While campaigning in Kerala, Rahul said that coming to the southern state was a refreshing change from the politics of North. The BJP taunted him of running away to Kerala from UP's Amethi from where he was an MP for 15 years. Nadda tweeted that India has rejected the divide and rule politics, while union minister Dharmendra Pradhan said that soon Rahul will have to run from Kerala as well just like Amethi.

North Vs South: BJP hits back at Rahul with an Amethi taunt

A battery of BJP leaders charged on Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday over his comments on South politics being better than that of the North. Led by BJP chief JP Nadda, a number of ministers attacked the Wayanad MP for "trying to divide" India. While campaigning in Kerala, Rahul said that coming to the southern state was a refreshing change from the politics of North. The BJP taunted him of running away to Kerala from UP's Amethi from where he was an MP for 15 years. Nadda tweeted that India has rejected the divide and rule politics, while union minister Dharmendra Pradhan said that soon Rahul will have to run from Kerala as well just like Amethi.
