Robert Vadra hints at contesting 2024 Lok Sabha election, eyes Amethi

Robert Vadra, the husband of Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi, has expressed his interest in contesting the forthcoming general elections from the Gandhi family's former bastion, the Amethi constituency.

The Uttar Pradesh region was formerly represented by Rahul Gandhi before he was defeated by the current BJP MP Smriti Irani.

In an interview to ANI news agenncy, Vadra took potshots at Irani saying that "the person who was elected last time is only concerned with attacking the Gandhi family, and not with ensuring the development of the area and well-being of its people".

"For years, the Gandhi family worked hard in Rae Bareli, Amethi and Sultanpur...It seems that the Amethi people have realised their mistake by electing Smriti Irani and ousting Rahul Gandhi. They now want a Gandhi family member to represent them. And they expect me to represent them if I decide to take the political plunge. I remember, my first political campaign with Priyanka was in Amethi in 1999," Robert Vadra said.

The Congress party is yet to declare a candidate for Amethi. The fifth phase of voting in Amethi is scheduled for May 20.
