Amazon plans to cut around 30,000 office jobs, nearly 10% of its corporate staff, as it trims costs and boosts investment in artificial intelligence.

Amazon will lay off tens of thousands of office workers as the e-commerce and tech giant trims costs amid ramped-up investments in artificial intelligence, according to US media reports.
Some 30,000 positions will be cut in a belt-tightening move expected to begin on Tuesday, multiple news outlets reported.
The reduction will represent nearly 10 percent of the approximately 350,000 office jobs at Amazon but is reported not to affect the distribution and warehouse workforce that makes up the majority of the company's more than 1.5 million employees.
Seattle-based Amazon did not reply to AFP queries regarding the planned cuts reported by the Wall Street Journal, New York Times and other outlets citing anonymous sources.
Amazon shares ended the formal trading day up slightly as word of the potential cost-cutting move spread.
Amazon chief executive Andy Jassy has lauded the potential of AI to streamline workplace operations, from engaging with customers online to making offices more efficient.
"Our conviction that AI will change every customer experience is starting to play out," Jassy said during Amazon's last quarterly earnings call.
Amazon will next report earnings on Thursday, and is among the tech titans under pressure to show the merit of huge investments in AI.
"AWS will be under pressure to both show revenue acceleration and operating margin improvement in light of its massive AI investments," Emarketer principal analyst Sky Canaves said, referring to Amazon Web Services cloud computing unit.
Amazon will also likely be pressed for details about a recent AWS outage.
Popular internet services ranging from streaming platforms to messaging services to banking were offline for hours last week due to an outage in Amazon's crucial cloud network, illustrating the extent to which internet life depends on the tech titan.
The disruption affected streaming platforms, including Amazon's Prime Video service and Disney+, as well as Perplexity AI, the Fortnite game, Airbnb, Snapchat and Duolingo.
Mobile telephone services and messaging apps Signal and WhatsApp were affected in Europe, according to Downdetector.
People also reported problems reaching websites including Amazon's own e-commerce shop.
Some banks such as Lloyd's were also impacted, and pointed to Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud computing platform as the source.
Amazon said it identified the "trigger of the event" as an issue involving the Domain Name System (DNS), which acts as an internet address book directing data traffic.
AWS leads the cloud computing market, followed closely by Microsoft Azure, with Google Cloud in third place.

Curious to know how your package travels from a simple click on the screen all the way to your doorstep? Now, you can experience a key part of that journey firsthand with Amazon fulfillment centers (its smart warehouses) in India opening doors for public tours.
Starting Q4 2025, the ecommerce giant will offer a peek at behind-the-scenes logistics of packages through free in-person tours of its fulfillment centers (FC) in Delhi NCR and Bengaluru.
During these 45 to 60-minutes guided tours, visitors can catch the action before the package reaches consumers' doorstep, in the process exploring facilities where millions of products are stored and customer orders processed and shipped daily, Amazon said on Monday as it announced the expansion of its public tour program to India.
This initiative invites interested visitors to visit Amazon's fulfillment centers, offering a glimpse into the technology and an opportunity to meet the people behind customer deliveries, the release said.
Amazon made the announcement at the 'Delivering the Future' event in Tokyo, which showcases the company's latest innovations and technologies.
The tours will run three times weekly at both Delhi NCR and Bengaluru FCs, accommodating up to 20 participants per tour.
People keen on these tours will be able to register online later this year and experience the behind-the-scenes operations.
"These tours offer visitors a behind-the-scenes look at the technology and people working together to deliver for our customers every day," Abhinav Singh, VP Operations India and Australia said.
The centre in Delhi NCR, the largest fulfillment center in North India, spans 4,50,000 square feet, a size equivalent to eight football fields.
The Bengaluru facility is Amazon's largest fulfillment center in the country with over 2 million cubic feet of storage space.
Nick Boone-Lutz, who leads the public tours program at Amazon said, "Since 2014, we've welcomed over 2 million visitors across more than 35 locations in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, France, Germany, and Italy."

Karan Tejpal had almost given up on his dream to become a director when he stumbled upon the idea of his critically-acclaimed film "Stolen", about two brothers who are forced to confront their privilege after they witness a baby being stolen from an impoverished tribal woman at a small town railway station.
The director, who worked as an assistant on films like &ldquo;3 Idiots&rdquo; and &ldquo;Delhi 6&rdquo;, said he wrote "Stolen" after he came across a video where two businessmen lost their lives in a lynching because they were mistaken as baby snatchers by the crowd. &nbsp; "Disparate worlds are always clashing and coming together and it's not something unique in itself in India. But the way we have sort of addressed it in 'Stolen' is to create a compelling story out of it, and to have that intersection kind of take our privileged characters to a place where they have a transformation," Tejpal told PTI in a virtual interview.
"We never set out with this idea that we are telling some really unique story about this intersection. But the idea was to tell an honest story about it, which compels you to think about these intersections." After its premiere at the Venice Film Festival, "Stolen" travelled to many international festivals like BFI London, and the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) Produced and co-written by Gaurav Dhingra of Jungle Book Studio, the film features Abhishek Banerjee and Shubham as two brothers and Mia Maelzer as the tribal woman. Harish Khanna and Sahidur Rahaman also star in key roles. The movie released on Prime Video earlier this month.
Tejpal said his personal motto while making a movie is to find the "heart of the story".
"If filmmakers do not find their heart within a story and they don't find that personal link to a story, then that story is never going to have any potency. For me, this project, or for any in the future, I think the hardest part is finding the heart of that story." Banerjee, who plays sheltered rich brat Gautam Bansal in the movie, said his motivations to do the film were simple: he wanted to be part of an action drama.
&ldquo;I really love the action genre and just wanted to have fun on the set without thinking much... Both Karan and Gaurav had designed the film so well that you could see the film even when they were giving the narration,&rdquo; he said.
He, however, said being on the "Stolen" set felt like being in a proper acting college.
&ldquo;This was the most planned film I've ever shot. Not a single minute was wasted. If we are on set, we are doing something productive. And if we are not on set, then still, we are doing something productive, either rehearsing or writing,&rdquo; he added.
Shubham, who graduated from the Film and Television Institute of India and co-wrote the critically-acclaimed "Eeb Allay Ooo!" with Prateek Vats, said he also loved that the movie was rooted in the action genre.
Shubham's Raman is the empathetic brother who ropes in a reluctant Guatam to help the woman, Jhumpa Mahato, in her perilous journey into the heartland to find her missing baby.
The actor said he was initially worried about coming off as a boring character. "I decided that instead of concentrating on the morality part of it, I would focus on my relationship with my brother? How are my decisions being taken because of my brother? Sometimes these are very complicated, detailed things like if he's saying tea, I will say coffee. It is just that toxic brother relationship, which sometimes leads to problems,&rdquo; he added.
Melzer said she wanted her portrayal of Jhumpa to be relevant to the real mothers.
"At no point should it come across as if I am trying to enact it. This kind of pain cannot be acted on, that's what I feel. I tried to use my craft to go as close as possible to this feeling and maybe our film did justice to the story. The material, the films Karan gave me to watch and study and the research brought me closer to the role,&rdquo; she added.
Tejpal admitted that "Stolen" was a difficult film to make though it has found a lot of support from within the industry with filmmakers like Anurag Kashyap, Vikramaditya Motwane, Kiran Rao and Nikhil Advani boarding it as executive producers.
Dhingra said when Tejpal showed him the video, he felt scared and they decided to work on the movie together. Initially, he said, the director wanted to shoot the movie in Maharashtra but they eventually decided Pushkar in Rajasthan would be more suited.
"The pandemic delayed our film and many on the team fell sick during the shooting but once it was over and the film premiered in Venice, it was like a bullet train and there was no looking back," Dhingra said.
Tejpal also looks back at the experience with a lot of gratitude.
"Making a first film for any filmmaker is an uphill battle. It is something that we all have to fight. Prior to 'Stolen', I had been fighting that fight for a long time, very unsuccessfully, in fact. And just before 'Stolen', I had kind of given up on this (direction) thing. I thought I would give up and become a writer and then the film happened very organically," he said.
"I've been blessed on this journey along the way as the film has given back to me 500 times what I could have ever expected or even imagined."

Amazon India on Tuesday announced plans to expand 'Ashray' centres - dedicated rest stops for all delivery associates across e-commerce and logistics ecosystem - to 100 by this year.
These centres have air-conditioned seating, clean drinking water, electrolytes, mobile charging points, washrooms, first-aid kits, and refreshment facilities for delivery associates.
The announcement by Amazon - which has over 30 such centres at present - assumes significance as IMD has warned of hotter-than-usual temperatures from April to June, with more heatwave days in central and eastern India and northwestern plains.
With the mercury soaring in the capital, 10 new centres have been launched in Delhi-NCR.
The Ashray (meaning shelter in Hindi) centres are not confined to Amazon's own network of delivery partners. Associates across e-commerce and logistics ecosystem can avail these facilities.
Amazon said this effort is an industry-first initiative designed to offer dedicated rest centres to delivery associates and logistics partners in high footfall areas.
While the centres are currently funded by Amazon, the e-commerce giant is open to idea of more companies teaming up in future to scale this up over and beyond, and to make it sustainable.
Located at petrol pumps and commercial rental spaces, these centres are equipped with essential amenities. Ashray centres operate from 9 AM to 9 PM, seven days a week all-year round, offering free access to all visiting delivery associates for up to 30 minutes per visit.
With a capacity to accommodate up to 15 people at any time, the centres offer convenient parking spaces as well.
"The health, wellbeing and comfort of delivery associates is our top priority," Abhinav Singh, VP Operations, India and Australia at Amazon said.
These facilities aim to offer delivery associates comfortable and safe pit-stop during their busy schedules.
"Opening these facilities to all delivery associates across e-commerce and logistics ecosystem, supports the entire logistics community and reflects our commitment to raising industry standards. We are encouraged by the response we have seen so far and are committed to expanding this initiative to 100 such centres across India," he said.

The National Human Rights Commission has issued a notice to Centre over alleged &ldquo;anti-labour practices&rdquo; at Amazon India's Manesar warehouse. The commission took suo motu cognisance of a media report that stated that at one of Amazon India&rsquo;s warehouses "a 24-year-old worker was asked to pledge that they would not take toilet or water breaks until they finished unloading packages from six trucks, each measuring 24 feet long, after their team's 30-minute tea break had ended".
<h3>Notice to Centre over Amazon India</h3>
As per Business Today, the Commission stated that if the contents of the report are true then this tantamounts to serious human rights violation of the workers as well as violation of labour laws and guidelines by the Union Ministry of Labour and Employment.
In the proceedings of the case shared by NHRC, it said "a female employee at the Manesar warehouse reportedly stated that no restroom facilities are available on the working sites.&rdquo;

If the heat or humidity inside the buildings increase, then they take action to provide comfortable working conditions, including temporarily suspending work. &ldquo;We have cooling measures in all our buildings, including ventilation systems, fans, and spot coolers," the spokesperson added.&nbsp;
The Human rights commission has however highlighted that even if the workers work continuously without breaks, including the 30-minute lunch and tea breaks, they would not be able to unload more than four trucks a day.&nbsp;
NHRC further highlighted that five warehouses in and around Manesar are accused of violating regulations outlined in the Factories Act, 1948. The commission has also issued a notice to the Secretary of Union Ministry of Labour and Employment, and has sought a detailed report within a week.

The report further mentioned that the delivery timelines for Amazon Bazaar products will likely be two to three days. This will be a deviation from its fast delivery proposition offered to prime members.&nbsp;
&ldquo;Consumer cohorts at the lower end of the market typically do not prioritise faster deliveries&hellip;They (Amazon India) have lost out on the segment so far and essentially want to tap the typical Meesho customer,&rdquo; a source told The Economic Times.

Meesho&rsquo;s ASP is Rs 300-350 and it operates on a zero commission model while earning revenue from advertising and offering logistics services to sellers.
While Meesho doesn't operate its own warehouses, Amazon and Flipkart have their own storage spaces.&nbsp;
&ldquo;Meesho has snapped up market share from Amazon in certain segments like fashion, homecare and others. For Amazon to acquire these users at low ASP segments, they would want to offer a similar product to merchants and consumers,&rdquo; Satish Meena, an independent ecommerce analyst and advisor at Datum Intelligence told The Economic Times. &ldquo;Amazon Fashion is not like Myntra&hellip; They never got it right in India and this would be another attempt.&rdquo;

The employee had told Insider that the company in May had informed them that they would be required to work from Seattle office for three days a week beginning June. As per the employee, they were "blindsided" by the decision and felt that it was a betrayal of the company's original promise to allow them to work remotely indefinitely.

The employee who had just both a house in a remote location was devastated with the company mandate.
"I was devastated," the employee said. "I had just bought a house in a remote location and was finally able to live the life I had always dreamed of. I couldn't believe that Amazon was going to take that away from me."
The employee also mentioned that they tried negotiating with Amazon. However, the talks bore nothing as the company was not ready to budge.&nbsp;
"After being shuffled around through five company re-organizations within the last year, I ended up reporting to a manager who insisted I needed to work in person in Seattle by June 1, despite my most recent promotion designating mine as a remote role," the ex Amazon executive wrote.
The employee's queries of relocation package also went unanswered. All of this pushed him to resign which entailed giving up $203,000 in unvested stock.
An unvested stock is stock set aside for an employee but that he/she has not yet fully owned due to the fact that certain conditions (e.g. performance targets or length of employment) haven't been met yet in a vesting period.
While he has found a new role in another company with the same pay, the share values can't compete with Amazon's stock options.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Amazon's spokesperson Brad Glasser told Insider via email that they couldn't confirm the employee's story and further added that "a single anecdote could not characterise a company of Amazon's size."
"We've repeatedly made our position clear: In February, we shared with employees that we'd be asking them to start coming into the office three or more days per week beginning in May because we believe it would yield the best long-term results for our customers, business, and culture. As part of this process, we've asked a relatively small percentage of our team to relocate to be in the same location as their teams. This isn't a one-size-fit-all approach, so team hubs and relocation timelines will vary based on a number of factors, and we're communicating with employees individually and providing relocation support. As is the case with any of our policies, we expect our team to follow them and will take appropriate action if someone chooses not to do that", Glasser added.
Amazon which has been vocal about returning to office had also said that &nbsp;it is willing to be flexible with employees who have extenuating circumstances.

As per the report, Amazon has committed a hefty sum for a time frame extending beyond five years and that the firm intends to acquire more than a million licences for Microsoft 365. Amazon which is using a local, on-site version of Microsoft Office products is planning to integrate these new systems in early November.
This also coincides with Microsoft's release of an upgraded 365 suite with new AI capabilities. As per the report the full shift for Amazon's personnel is scheduled for early 2024. As implementing such a big deal necessitates substantial planning and allocation of cloud resources, the publication that teams within Microsoft's Office and security groups are already ramping up operations to meet the rise in demand.
Earlier, Amazon refused to get the clod version of Microsoft's 365 offerings, citing apprehension about storing data on a competitor's cloud platform, reported Business Insider.

The top-line growth has seen a blow as consumer spending on 'nice-to-have' goods have slowdown. As per Bloomberg, Best Buy Co. Inc., Dollar Tree Inc. and Target Corp. all have narrowed their guidance for the rest of the year, saying inflation has put a crimp in consumers&rsquo; shopping habits.

While Amazon and Flipkart can afford flashy discounts due to their sister businesses, small retailers have to tread the water carefully. As per market research firm Mintel, Three in five consumers who plan to shop this winter say they want to spend the least amount of money possible. This sets up an environment for retailers for risky discount wars as they fight for customers.
