A hotel room in Jerusalem used by Al Jazeera as its de facto office was raided by the Israeli police on May 6, after the Benjamin Netanyahu government ordered the Qatari-owned TV station to shut down local operations.
Videos doing the rounds showed officers in plainclothes dismantling camera equipment in a hotel room.
Reuters news agency, quoting an Al Jazeera source, said that the hotel was located in East Jerusalem.&nbsp;
The extraordinary order, which includes confiscating broadcast equipment, preventing the broadcast of the channel's reports and blocking its websites, is believed to be the first time Israel has ever shuttered a foreign news outlet.
Al Jazeera went off Israel's main cable provider in the hours after the order. However, its website and multiple online streaming links still operated Sunday.
The network has reported the Israeli-Hamas war nonstop since the militants' initial cross-border attack October 7 and has maintained 24-hour coverage in the Gaza Strip amid Israel's grinding ground offensive that has killed and wounded members of its own staff.
While including on-the-ground reporting of the war's casualties, its Arabic arm often publishes verbatim video statements from Hamas and other militant groups in the region.
&ldquo;Al Jazeera reporters harmed Israel's security and incited against soldiers,&rdquo; Netanyahu said in a statement. &ldquo;It's time to remove the Hamas mouthpiece from our country.&rdquo;
Al Jazeera issued a statement vowing it will &ldquo;pursue all available legal channels through international legal institutions in its quest to protect both its rights and journalists, as well as the public's right to information.&rdquo;
&ldquo;Israel's ongoing suppression of the free press, seen as an effort to conceal its actions in the Gaza Strip, stands in contravention of international and humanitarian law,&rdquo; the network said.
&ldquo;Israel's direct targeting and killing of journalists, arrests, intimidation and threats will not deter Al Jazeera." Israeli media said the order allows Israel to block the channel from operating in the country for 45 days.
The Israeli government has taken action against individual reporters over the decades since its founding in 1948, but broadly allows for a rambunctious media scene that includes foreign bureaus from around the world, even from Arab nations.
That changed with a law passed last month, which Netanyahu's office says allows the government to take action against a foreign channel seen as &ldquo;harming the country.&rdquo;
Israeli Communication Minister Shlomo Karhi later published footage online of authorities raiding a hotel room Al Jazeera had been broadcasting from in east Jerusalem, which the Palestinians hope to one day have for their future state. He said officials seized some of the channel's equipment there.
&ldquo;We finally are able to stop Al Jazeera's well-oiled incitement machine that harms the security of the country,&rdquo; Karhi said.
The ban did not appear to affect the channel's operations in the occupied West Bank or Gaza Strip, where Israel wields control but which are not sovereign Israeli territory.

As soon as the Indian government notified the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act or CAA, Qatar-based international news organisation Al Jazeera called the law 'anti-Muslim'.
Following this, the Press Information Bureau's fact-checking wing called the claim by Al Jazeera misleading.
Taking to social media platform X, the PIB said that Al Jazeera is spreading misinformation. It said that the CAA will not take away citizenship of any Indian citizen irrespective of religion and is not against any community.
"It's an enabling law only to provide citizenship to persecuted minorities from neighbouring countries - Afghanistan, Pakistan &amp; Bangladesh," added the PIB.
The controversial law has been opposed by various Opposition parties in India, including Congress, DMK and TMC.&nbsp;

Al Jazeera said Sunday two of its Palestinian journalists in the Gaza Strip were killed in an Israeli strike on their car, in what the Qatar-based media network claimed was a "targeted killing".
Hamza Wael Dahdouh and Mustafa Thuria, who also worked as a video stringer for AFP and other news organisations, were killed while they were "on their way to carry out their duty" for the channel in the Gaza Strip, the network said.
A third freelance journalist travelling with them, Hazem Rajab, was seriously injured.
The health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza also confirmed the deaths and blamed an Israeli strike.
Witnesses told AFP that two rockets were fired at the car -- one hit the front of the vehicle and the other hit Hamza who was sitting next to the driver.
"We later found the body parts (of those in the car). The ambulance then came and carried those who were in the car," a witness, who declined to give his name for security reasons, told AFP.
The Israeli army told AFP that it had "struck a terrorist who operated an aircraft that posed a threat to IDF troops", adding that it was "aware of the reports that during the strike, two other suspects who were in the same vehicle as the terrorist were also hit".
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the journalists' deaths were an "unimaginable tragedy".
"And that's also been the case for... far too many innocent Palestinian men, women and children," he said in Doha during a regional tour.
AFP video footage showed a crowd of people inspecting the car's mangled remains, while pools of blood lay on the road. No other damage was visible in the area.
Al Jazeera said in a statement it "strongly condemns the Israeli occupation forces' targeting of the Palestinian journalists' car", accusing Israel of "targeting" journalists and "violating the principles of freedom of the press".
Hamza's father Wael al-Dahdouh is Al Jazeera's Gaza bureau chief, and was recently wounded in a strike himself after his wife and two other children were killed in Israeli bombardment in the initial weeks of the war.
"Hamza was everything for me ... while we are full of humanity they (Israel) are full of murder and hatred," Dahdouh said on Al Jazeera television.

AFP's global news director Phil Chetwynd said the agency was "shocked" by Mustafa's death and its thoughts were with his family.
"We vigorously condemn all attacks against journalists doing their jobs and it is essential we have a clear explanation as to what happened," Chetwynd added.
Crowds of people gathered later Sunday at the funeral where a tearful Dahdouh was seen kissing the hand of his dead son.
"The world should see with two eyes, not with an Israeli eye. They should see everything happening to the Palestinian people," Dahdouh said.
"What did Hamza do to them (Israelis)? What did my family do to them? What did the civilians do to them? They did nothing to them, but the world closes its eyes to what's happening in the Gaza Strip."
Wael Dahdouh was wounded in an Israeli strike in December that also killed Al Jazeera cameraman Samer Abu Daqqa. The Qatar-based channel has lost three journalists since the start of the Israel-Hamas war on October 7.
Thuria, in his 30s, had worked with AFP since 2019 and had also worked with other international media outlets.
Thuria and Hamza Wael Dahdouh had been tasked with filming the aftermath of a strike on a house in Rafah and their car was hit while they were on their way back, AFP correspondents said.
The war in Gaza erupted when Hamas militants stormed across Gaza's border into Israel in an unprecedented attack which left some 1,140 people dead, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures.
Israel has vowed to eradicate Hamas, denounced as a terrorist group by the US and EU, and has kept up a relentless bombing of Gaza, which the Hamas-run health ministry says has killed 22,835 people, mostly civilians.
"We are in shock," Christophe Deloire of the media advocacy group Reporters Without Borders wrote Sunday on X, formerly Twitter, calling the situation a "never-ending slaughter".
The Committee to Protect Journalists says at least 79 journalists and media professionals, the vast majority Palestinian, have been killed since the start of the war.
In May 2022, Shireen Abu Akleh, a veteran Palestinian journalist working for Al Jazeera, was killed while covering an Israeli raid on the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank.
The Israeli army later admitted one of its soldiers probably shot the reporter -- who was wearing a helmet and a bulletproof vest marked "press" -- having mistaken her for a militant.

Al Jazeera's chief correspondent in the Gaza Strip, Wael Dahdouh, was helping broadcast live images of the besieged territory's night sky when he received the devastating news: His wife, son, and daughter had all been killed in an Israeli airstrike on Wednesday.
Moments later, the Qatari-based satellite channel switched to footage of Dahdouh entering al-Aqsa Hospital in Gaza before giving way to grief as he peered over the body of his dead son.
&ldquo;They take revenge on us in our children?&rdquo; he said, kneeling over his son's bloodied body, still wearing his protective press vest from that day's work.
Dahdouh's grandson also was declared dead two hours later, the network reported.
The video was sure to reverberate across the Arab world, where the 53-year-old journalist is well-known as the face of Palestinians during many wars. He is revered in his native Gaza for telling people's stories of suffering and hardship to the outside world.
According to Al Jazeera, Dahdouh's family members were killed by an Israeli airstrike that hit Nuseirat Refugee Camp, located in an area of Gaza where the military had encouraged people to go to stay safe. It said a number of other relatives were still missing, and it remained unclear how many others were killed.

Dahdouh's family were among the more than 1 million Gaza residents displaced by the war, now in its 19th day, and were staying in a house in Nuseirat when the strike hit, the network said.
The Israeli strikes have killed more than 6,500 Palestinians, Gaza's Health Ministry says. The Associated Press could not independently verify the death toll.
The fighting has killed more than 1,400 people in Israel &mdash; mostly civilians slain during the initial Hamas attack, according to the Israeli government.
Late Wednesday, Al Jazeera replayed the moment Dahdouh was informed about the deaths. In an audio recording, he is heard picking up a phone and telling a frantic caller multiple times: &ldquo;Who are you with?&rdquo; Earlier, Dahdouh was on air, covering the aftermath of a separate strike that had killed at least 26 people, according to local officials. Throughout the war, Dahdouh has remained in Gaza City, despite Israeli calls for residents to head south ahead of an expected ground offensive.
Hundreds of thousands of people have fled to Nuseirat and other locations in central and southern Gaza, believing them to be safer. But Israeli strikes have continued to pound these areas, which are suffering dire shortages of water, medicine and fuel under an Israeli siege.
&ldquo;This is the safe area which the occupation army talked about, the moral army,&rdquo; said Dahdouh with bitter sarcasm to a fellow a Al Jazeera reporter at the al-Aqsa hospital.
In a statement, Al Jazeera said Dahdouh's family &ldquo;home was targeted&rdquo; in an &ldquo;indiscriminate assault by the Israeli occupation.&rdquo; The Israeli army had no immediate comment. It says it strikes only Hamas military targets, but the Palestinians say thousands of civilians have died. Israel accuses Hamas of using civilians as human shields.
Israel has threatened to shut down Al Jazeera over its coverage of the war. Al Jazeera is a Qatari state-owned media network and is deeply critical of Israel, particularly its treatment of Palestinians.
Over the last week, the gas-rich nation of Qatar has emerged as a key intermediary over the fate of more than 200 hostages captured by Hamas militants during their Oct. 7 assault. Qatar has hosted Hamas' political office in its capital of Doha for over a decade. A veteran journalist working for Al Jazeera was killed on Wednesday during an Israeli operation in the West Bank city of Jenin, prompting the Palestinian Authority (PA) and the Qatar-based network to blame the Israeli Army for her death.
The Palestinian Health Ministry said that 51-year-old Shireen Abu Aqla, a Jerusalem-based journalist for Al Jazeera, was hit in the head by live fire.
A second reporter, Ali Samodi from Al-Quds newspaper sustained a gunshot wound to the back and is in stable condition, the ministry said.
The Israeli military denied that its forces targeted the journalists and called for a " joint pathological analysis and investigation" to establish the truth.
Israeli forces were operating in the Jenin refugee camp and several other areas of the West Bank to apprehend "terror suspects," the military said.
According to the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF), the militants opened fire at the Israeli forces and hurled explosives at them during the raid, before the soldiers returned fire.
The IDF was looking into "a possibility, now being looked into, that reporters were hit – possibly by shots fired by Palestinian gunmen", the Israeli army said. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said he holds Israeli forces "fully responsible" for Abu Aqla's death.
Al Jazeera said that she was killed "in cold blood," in what the network called a "horrifying crime that breaches international norms".
"We condemn this heinous crime, intended to prevent the media from carrying out its message, and we hold the Israeli government and the occupation forces responsible for her death,” the channel wrote on Twitter.
“We call on the international community to condemn and hold the Israeli occupation forces accountable for the deliberate killing of our colleague Shireen Abu Aqla,” it said.
In footage from the scene, Abu Aqleh was seen wearing a PRESS vest and a helmet and was hit below the ear in an area not covered by her helmet.
Samodi, working for the Jerusalem-based Al-Quds, told the local media that he and Abu Aqla were clearly identified as reporters, wearing their press vests, when they were shot at.
Describing Palestinian accusations as "unfounded", Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett in a statement to the Knesset (parliament) on Wednesday defended the Israeli army, which he said acted "carefully and responsibly" during its operation in the West Bank.
"To begin with, I would like to address the events in Jenin. Last night, IDF (Israel Defence Forces) forces conducted an extensive operation in northern Samaria, as part of the efforts of the State of Israel to stop the deadly wave of terrorism.
“During the engagement, armed Palestinians shot in an inaccurate, indiscriminate and uncontrolled manner. Our forces from the IDF returned fire as accurately, carefully and responsibly as possible", Bennett told the Knesset.
"Sadly, Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was killed in the exchange. The Palestinian Authority rushed to blame Israel for her death, and the president of the PA made unfounded accusations against Israel before any investigation had been carried out," he said.
Based on preliminary information, there is a significant possibility that the journalist was shot by the armed Palestinians. However, to uncover the truth, there must be a real investigation, and the Palestinians are currently preventing that, he said.
"Without a serious investigation, we will not reach the truth," he said.
Bennett called upon the PA to conduct a joint forensic analysis based on all the documentation and findings available in order to uncover the truth.
"As I said, the Palestinians are refusing, and I expect them to cooperate and refrain from any actions that may contaminate the investigation," he said.
Bennett said last night's action in Jenin was part of a series of counterterrorism efforts meant to put an end to the wave of terrorism and restore security to Israeli citizens.

"Israel has called on the Palestinians to conduct a joint pathological analysis and investigation, which would be based on all of the existing documentation and findings, in order to get to the truth. So far, the Palestinians have refused this offer," he said.
He also asserted that the IDF forces will continue their counterterrorism operations in order to end the “deadly wave of terror” and restore security to the citizens of Israel.

Human rights group Yesh Din called for an international investigation into her death, saying that the Israeli defence establishment “has proven in several cases that it is unable to investigate such incidents on its own.” Abu Aqla’s death “requires urgent international intervention in order to get to the truth, we call for the establishment of an independent international commission of inquiry to investigate this case in depth,” it said.
The IDF has been operating in Jenin and across the West Bank in an attempt to stop a series of recent attacks that have killed 19 people in a month and a half.
Close to 30 Palestinians have also been killed in Israeli operations during this time.

A veteran journalist working for Al Jazeera was killed on Wednesday during an Israeli operation in the West Bank city of Jenin, prompting the Palestinian Authority (PA) and the Qatar-based network to blame the Israeli Army for her death.
The Palestinian Health Ministry said that 51-year-old Shireen Abu Aqla, a Jerusalem-based journalist for Al Jazeera, was hit in the head by live fire.
A second reporter, Ali Samodi from Al-Quds newspaper sustained a gunshot wound to the back and is in stable condition, the ministry said.
The Israeli military denied that its forces targeted the journalists and called for a " joint pathological analysis and investigation" to establish the truth.
Israeli forces were operating in the Jenin refugee camp and several other areas of the West Bank to apprehend "terror suspects," the military said.
According to the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF), the militants opened fire at the Israeli forces and hurled explosives at them during the raid, before the soldiers returned fire.
The IDF was looking into "a possibility, now being looked into, that reporters were hit &ndash; possibly by shots fired by Palestinian gunmen", the Israeli army said. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said he holds Israeli forces "fully responsible" for Abu Aqla's death.
Al Jazeera said that she was killed "in cold blood," in what the network called a "horrifying crime that breaches international norms".
"We condemn this heinous crime, intended to prevent the media from carrying out its message, and we hold the Israeli government and the occupation forces responsible for her death,&rdquo; the channel wrote on Twitter.

&ldquo;We call on the international community to condemn and hold the Israeli occupation forces accountable for the deliberate killing of our colleague Shireen Abu Aqla,&rdquo; it said.
In footage from the scene, Abu Aqleh was seen wearing a PRESS vest and a helmet and was hit below the ear in an area not covered by her helmet.
Samodi, working for the Jerusalem-based Al-Quds, told the local media that he and Abu Aqla were clearly identified as reporters, wearing their press vests, when they were shot at.
Describing Palestinian accusations as "unfounded", Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett in a statement to the Knesset (parliament) on Wednesday defended the Israeli army, which he said acted "carefully and responsibly" during its operation in the West Bank.
"To begin with, I would like to address the events in Jenin. Last night, IDF (Israel Defence Forces) forces conducted an extensive operation in northern Samaria, as part of the efforts of the State of Israel to stop the deadly wave of terrorism.
&ldquo;During the engagement, armed Palestinians shot in an inaccurate, indiscriminate and uncontrolled manner. Our forces from the IDF returned fire as accurately, carefully and responsibly as possible", Bennett told the Knesset.
"Sadly, Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was killed in the exchange. The Palestinian Authority rushed to blame Israel for her death, and the president of the PA made unfounded accusations against Israel before any investigation had been carried out," he said.
Based on preliminary information, there is a significant possibility that the journalist was shot by the armed Palestinians. However, to uncover the truth, there must be a real investigation, and the Palestinians are currently preventing that, he said.
"Without a serious investigation, we will not reach the truth," he said.
Bennett called upon the PA to conduct a joint forensic analysis based on all the documentation and findings available in order to uncover the truth.
"As I said, the Palestinians are refusing, and I expect them to cooperate and refrain from any actions that may contaminate the investigation," he said.
Bennett said last night's action in Jenin was part of a series of counterterrorism efforts meant to put an end to the wave of terrorism and restore security to Israeli citizens.
