Passenger dissatisfaction with major airlines in India has been laid bare by a recent survey, highlighting significant concerns regarding timeliness and staff attitude. According to the survey conducted by LocalCircles, 69% of respondents expressed dissatisfaction with the timeliness of Air India and Vistara flights.
The survey, which garnered over 47,000 responses from flyers across 302 districts in India, underscores a widespread problem plaguing the aviation sector.
Issues related to maintenance, staff behaviour, and baggage handling were among the top grievances reported by passengers. A notable 55% of respondents traveling with Air India flagged concerns regarding aircraft maintenance, while 38% cited problems with staff attitude and courteousness.
Transparency during flight delays or cancellations also emerged as a significant issue, with 38% of passengers reporting inadequate information.
SpiceJet, another major player in the industry, faced similar criticism with 59% of respondents citing timeliness as a major concern. Additionally, issues with baggage handling and transparency during disruptions were highlighted by a considerable portion of passengers.
IndiGo, often lauded as the market leader, did not escape criticism either. Nearly half (46%) of passengers surveyed expressed dissatisfaction with the attitude and courteousness of IndiGo staff. This finding indicates a need for improved customer service standards across the board.
New entrants like Akasa Air also faced scrutiny, with 75% of passengers flagging issues with customer service and 50% citing timeliness as a major problem.
The survey's respondents represented a diverse demographic, with 66% men and 34% women participating. Furthermore, respondents hailed from various tiers of cities, with 46% from tier 1, 30% from tier 2, and 24% from tier 3, 4, and rural districts.
As the aviation industry strives to recover from the challenges posed by the pandemic, addressing these concerns will be crucial for restoring passenger confidence and ensuring a positive travel experience for all. Indian aviation has registered 128.93 lakh fliers in the first quarter of 2023. As per DGCA's record, about 375.04 lakh people took domestic flights during Jan-March 2023. This is just short of the best ever quarter, that is Q4CY19 that recorded 381 lakh passengers who caught domestic flights.
This record high is reported at a time when airlines faced challenges like shortage of planes due to grounding. This affected Indigo and GoFirst.
However, Indigo had managed to capture over half the market in the month of March, while the rest of the airlines struggled to manage even 10%. Indigo carried 73.17 lakh passengers in the month of March alone. This was the first time Indigo had crossed the 70 lakh passenger mark in a month.&nbsp;
As per MoneyControl, after a few months in the number two position, Air India was pushed to number three in March by Vistara. However, Air India closed the quarter as the second-largest player in the country. Across the three Tata carriers, the collective market share now stands at 25.1 percent, about five percent lower than their target of 30 percent under the Vihaan.AI transformation plan. While Air India has more capacity in the market, Vistara has been able to push Air India out with higher load factors.
Meanwhile airlines Spicejet and GoFirst are shrinking fast at the market share. SpiceJet hasn't added any new aircraft since the last quarter of FY22. Problems hover over GoFirst due to the Grounding issues as it is unable to acquire replacement engines. However, both the airlines had high load factors in March.&nbsp;

In a move to give a big relief to domestic carriers, the Maharashtra government has announced a reduction in the value added tax levied on aviation turbine fuel (ATF) to 18 per cent from 25 per cent.&nbsp;
The new rate will be applicable in Mumbai, Pune and Raigad districts, deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis announced in his budget speech. Maharashtra levies 4 per cent VAT on ATF in districts except Mumbai and Pune. According to reports, the new rate could help in reducing fuel expenses for airlines as they rework their fueling uplift plans but it is not expected to add to many new flights as both Mumbai and Pune airports are constrained for slots. Fuel costs account for 30-40 per cent of the airlines' expenses.&nbsp;The issue of reduction in Value-Added Tax (VAT) on ATF was taken up with states/Union Territories levying high VATs on ATF and many of them reduced the tax on aviation fuel in the last many months.
To ensure financial viability in the sector, Union aviation minister, Jyotiraditya Scindia has been asking states to cut VAT on ATF.&nbsp;
"In a scenario of high fuel prices, this step will prove to be a catalyst in our efforts to ramp up air connectivity. With this, Maharashtra joins the league of total 19 States/UTs that have rationalised VAT rates in the last 1.5 years. Alongside enhanced connectivity for Mumbai, Pune &amp; Raigad, this will also make travel more affordable, and boost growth", said Scindia in a tweet.&nbsp;

Further IndiGo, India&rsquo;s largest domestic airline, said it is considering the plan. &ldquo;We will continue to evaluate our service offerings to offer options and flexibility to meet the evolving needs of our customers," an IndiGo spokesperson said in response to a query. Currently, the lowest airfares offered on most domestic routes include the provision of a cabin bag weighing up to 8 kg and check-in luggage weighing 15-25 kg, and no Indian airline offers cabin baggage-only fares.

An inebriated Indian student in an American Airlines flight from New York to Delhi allegedly urinated and soiled a male co-passenger on Saturday, with Delhi Police saying necessary legal action is being taken on the basis of a complaint from the airline.
The airline has submitted a report about the incident to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The airline seems to have handled the situation professionally and have taken all appropriate action, a senior official at the regulator told PTI.
The incident happened in flight AA292 which landed at the Delhi airport at 9.50 pm on Saturday.
When contacted, American Airlines in a statement on Sunday said the flight was "met by local enforcement upon arrival in Delhi due to a disruptive customer" but did not provide specific details about the incident.
Delhi airport DCP Devesh Kumar Mahla on Sunday said a complaint of urination on co-passenger has been received from American Airlines against one person, who is a student in the US. The person is a resident of Defence colony in the national capital.

"We are taking necessary legal action," he said.

According to the source, the male victim was not keen on reporting the matter to the police after the student apologised as it might put his career in jeopardy.
However, the airline took it seriously and reported it to the Air Traffic Control (ATC) at the airport.

A female cancer patient, who recently underwent a surgery, was allegedly offloaded from a New York-bound flight of American Airlines at Delhi airport after she sought assistance from a flight attendant to keep her hand-bag in overhead cabin.
The incident was reported on January 30, and it came to light after the United Statesbased traveller, identified as Meenakshi Sengupta, lodged a complaint against the flight attendant accusing them of refusing to help her put the handbag weighing more than 5 pounds in the overhead cabin as she was unable to do so because of weak limbs.
In her complaint to the Delhi Police and the Civil Air, Meenakshi Sengupta said that she had also requested for wheelchair assistance to her seat, "I was also wearing a brace which was visible to everyone and they would know that I have some discomfort...because I CANNOT carry any weight in my hands at all and I'm weak from the surgery and don't need to strain myself by walking a lot." She said, "The ground staff was very supportive and helped me get into the aircraft and put my handbag on the side of the seat. Once inside the flight, I had a conversation with the air hostess and I explained my health condition to them...None of them mentioned about putting my handbag away. After the flight was about to take off, cabin lights were dimmed. At that time an air hostess came to put my hand bag in the overhead compartment. I requested her to help me put it but she refused to do so and told me it's not her job to do.

The incident also went viral on social media, and people urging the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) and Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) to take note of the matter.
Meanwhile, India's regulator- the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has taken cognisance of the case and asked American Airlines to submit its report.
The airline, in its official statement, said that its Customer Relations team has reached out to Sengupta to refund the unused portion of her ticket.

Airlines will reimburse 75 per cent of the ticket costs to passengers whose domestic flight tickets have been downgraded, with aviation regulator DGCA putting in place new norms.
For downgrade of international tickets, the reimbursement amount will vary from 30 per cent to 75 per cent of the ticket costs, including taxes, depending on the distance covered by the particular flight.
The new norms will be effective from February 15, a senior official at the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said on Wednesday.
The regulator decided to amend the norms against the backdrop of complaints from air travellers about their tickets booked for a particular class being downgraded by airlines.
In December last year, DGCA had proposed that airlines should have to refund the full value of such tickets, including taxes, and also that affected passenger will be flown free of cost in the next available class.
However, those proposals have been modified now in line with international practices, the official said.
The watchdog has amended its Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR) pertaining to facilities to be provided to passengers by airlines due to denied boarding, cancellation of flights and delays in flights.

"The amendment will allow the passenger, who is downgraded involuntarily and is carried in a class lower than that for which the ticket is purchased, to be reimbursed by the airline," DGCA said in a statement on Wednesday.
For the downgrade of a domestic flight ticket, the passenger concerned will get 75 per cent of the cost of ticket, including taxes, from the airline.
In the case of downgrade of an international ticket, a passenger will receive 30 per cent of the cost of ticket, including taxes, for flights flying 1,500 kilometres or less. Inclusive of taxes, the amount will be 50 per cent if the flight covers a distance between 1,500 and 3,500 kilometres, as per the statement.
The reimbursement amount will be 75 per cent of the cost of ticket, including taxes, for flights covering more than 3,500 kilometres.
The changes have been done to strengthen the rights of air travellers affected by downgrading of their tickets, the regulator said.

Apologising for the incident, Akasa Air said that it was "self-reported" to nodal agency CERT-In (Indian Computer Emergency Response Team). The airline said that there was no "intentional hacking attempt".

Some registered user information like names, gender, e-mail addresses and phone numbers may have been viewed by unauthorised individuals, but no travel-related information, travel records or payment information was compromised, Akasa Air said.
The airline, which started operations on 7 August 2022, said security of systems has been enhanced.

In wake of rising COVID-19 cases, commercial airlines have been directed by DGCA to ensure that passengers adhere to covid norms throughout the journey. The statutory body has also asked the airline operators to sensitise passengers about the same through various platforms. 
Strict action will be taken against those who will not follow the protocol. 
Following a drop in positivity rate and hospitalisation due to covid, mask rules in Delhi were relaxed in March this year. However, there has been a recent surge in virus cases in the capital, with the cases of hospitalisation increasing nearly two-fold in the last two weeks.

Aviation regulator DGCA on Wednesday asked all Indian carriers to strictly enforce COVID-19 protocol, including mask mandate for passengers, in aircraft amid a rise in infections across the country.
In a statement, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (<a href="https://www.editorji.com/business-news/spicejet-penalised-dgca-orders-50-flights-to-be-grounded-for-8-weeks-1658931665335">DGCA</a>) said it will be conducting "random checks" in aircraft across the country to see if the COVID-19 protocol is being enforced or not.
Airlines have to ensure that passengers are wearing face masks properly throughout the journey and there is proper sensitisation of passengers through various platforms, it mentioned.
"In case a passenger does not comply with the directions, strict action will be taken by airlines against the passenger," it added.
In view of the rise in the number of <a href="https://www.editorji.com/world-news/hong-kong-lifts-flight-ban-citing-little-effect-on-covid-19-1657188720510">COVID-19</a> cases, the airlines have been advised again on August 16 to strictly comply with COVID-19 protocol inside the aircraft, it mentioned.

To address such a situation, the DGCA had in 2010 issued a regulation that specified minimum compensation and facilities airlines must give to passengers who have been subjected to "denied boarding, cancellation or delay in flight". 
The DGCA's e-mail directed the airlines to comply with the 2010 regulation at the earliest opportunity available, preferably at the airport, if the passenger has reported on time.
The 2010 regulation of the DGCA states that when the number of passengers who have been given tickets for a flight and have reported at the airport for boarding the flight on time are more than the number of seats on a flight, the airline must first ask for volunteers to give up their seats in exchange of certain benefits.
However, in the absence of enough volunteers, the airline can evade giving any compensation if the affected passenger -- who has been denied boarding as the original flight is overbooked -- is given a ticket on a alternative flight that is departing within one hour of the original flight's departure.
The airline has to give an amount equal to 200 per cent of basic fare plus fuel charge in case the alternate flight is scheduled to depart within 24 hours of the original flight's departure.
The airline has to give an amount equal to 400 per cent of the basic fare plus fuel charge in case the alternate flight is scheduled to depart more than 24 hours after the original flight's departure, as per the regulation.
In case the affected passenger does not opt for alternate flight, refund of full value of ticket and compensation, equal to 400 per cent of basic fare plus fuel charge, has to be given, the regulation said.

Therefore, the DGCA has issued show-cause notices to SpiceJet and CSTPL, they added.
In a statement, a SpiceJet spokesperson said, "We have received a communication from the regulator on the matter and the airline shall submit its reply within the specified period." "We would like to reiterate that safety and security of our operations and passengers are of utmost importance which is manifested in our outstanding track record. None of our operations are compromised and they are in line with the international safety standards," the spokesperson added.
The 90 pilots have to undergo training again in a proper manner on the Max simulator.
The Boeing 737 Max planes were grounded in India by the DGCA on March 13, 2019, three days after the crash of an Ethiopian Airlines 737 Max aircraft near Addis Ababa which killed 157 people, including four Indians.

SpiceJet is the only Indian airline that has the Max aircraft in its fleet.
Akasa Air, the new airline backed by ace investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala and aviation veterans Aditya Ghosh and Vinay Dube, had in November last year signed a deal with Boeing to purchase 72 Max planes. Akasa Air is yet to receive any of these planes.

The capacity cap stood at 72.5% between August 12 and September 18, 65% between July 5 and August 12 and 50% between June 1 and July 5.
On October 9, the Indian carriers operated 2,340 domestic flights, which is 71.5% of their total pre-Covid capacity.
The order noted that the decision was taken 'after a review of the current status of scheduled domestic operations viz-a-viz passenger demand for air travel'.
