A massive traffic jam on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad National Highway in Maharashtra's Palghar district stranded more than 500 students and commuters for nearly 12 hours, officials said on Wednesday.
Twelve buses carrying students from Classes 5 to 10 of different schools, along with some college students from neighbouring Thane and Mumbai, were caught in the gridlock stretching for several kilometres near Vasai from around 5.30 pm on Tuesday till early Wednesday morning, they said.
The children, who were returning from a school picnic near Virar, had to remain without food or water for several hours.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Vasai, Poornima Chowgule-Shringi said the traffic jam was yet to be cleared.
The massive congestion on Tuesday evening left vehicles barely inching forward for hours.
By night, many students were exhausted, hungry and anxious, while worried parents waited tensely for updates on their children's safety.
Members of a local social organisation rushed to the site. They distributed water and biscuits to the stranded children and helped drivers manoeuvre buses through the congested lanes.
"The students were crying due to hunger and exhaustion. It was heartbreaking to see them suffer because of the poor traffic management," an activist said.
The jam was apparently triggered by the diversion of heavy vehicles due to ongoing repair works on the Ghodbunder highway in Thane, which resulted in excessive traffic load on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad route, the activist said.
An official from the Mira Bhayander-Vasai Virar police control room said there was a massive traffic jam, which was being cleared.
"The congestion is slowly easing, but movement remains sluggish," the official said.
Some buses carrying the students managed to take a detour, while others inched forward slowly through the jam. The last of the stranded buses reached its destination by 6 am on Wednesday, sources said.
The parents of the stranded children and other locals blamed poor planning and lack of coordination among authorities for the situation.
"Our children were left helpless for hours. There was no police, no information, no system in place," one of the parents claimed.
Residents demanded that the traffic department and civic authorities take immediate corrective measures to prevent such incidents in the future, especially when repair work and diversions on roads are planned.&nbsp;

A high-level multi-disciplinary committee, set up by the government to look into the Ahmedabad plane crash, on Monday deliberated on various possible theories that could have led to the country's worst air disaster in decades.
The panel, chaired by Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, listened to the opinions of various stakeholders about the possible causes of the aircrash and deliberated on steps to be taken to check future occurrence of any such accident, sources said.
In the first meeting of the panel here, the sources said, the focus of the participants was to analyse the possible causes of the aircrash and how to go about in "formulating Standard Operating Procedures for preventing such occurrences in the future".
Since a separate investigation is also being carried out by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), which is looking into the technical aspects of the crash, the panel discussed about the possible causes and lesson to be taken from it, the sources said.
Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu on Saturday said while the AAIB investigation will handle the technical aspects, the high-level committee will provide a holistic, policy-oriented roadmap for future safeguards.
Those who attended the meeting on Monday include representatives from the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Home Ministry, Indian Air Force, Intelligence Bureau, Gujarat government, Directorate General of Civil Aviation, and Bureau of Civil Aviation Security, among others.
The committee is expected to submit its report within three months.

The National Council of Gujarati Organisations UK (NCGO-UK) described it as a &ldquo;dark and tragic day&rdquo; for the community as it has been coordinating plans for a vigil in memory of the lives lost.
"This is a dark and tragic day for our community. Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and all those affected by this heartbreaking incident. The Gujarati and wider Indian communities across the United Kingdom and around the world are united in grief over this unimaginable loss,&rdquo; noted the NCGO-UK.
The family of Vishwash Kumar Ramesh in Leicester expressed their relief at his miraculous escape as the sole survivor of the crash, while still in anguish at his missing brother Ajay.
"We were all in shock as soon as we heard what happened, just utter shock; speechless,&rdquo; Nayan Kumar Ramesh told the BBC.
"He [Vishwash] himself has no idea how he survived, how he got out of the plane. When he called us, he was just more worried about my other brother, like 'Find Ajay, find Ajay'. That's all he cares about at the moment," he said.
India Global Forum&rsquo;s annual UK-India Week, which begins next week and is set to be addressed by leading ministers and policymakers from both governments, announced a commemoration of the victims of the tragedy.
"As we come together next week for our annual UK-India Week, we will take a moment to reflect on this loss, commemorating those who perished and reaffirming our commitment to the living bond between our countries,&rdquo; said IGF&rsquo;s British Gujarati founder and chairman Manoj Ladwa.
&ldquo;The passengers on board, spanning generations and professions, from students and business people to tourists and families, were a living embodiment of the bridge that binds the United Kingdom and India. This heartbreaking tragedy only reinforces the human dimension of that bond,&rdquo; he said.
Leicester East member of Parliament, Shivani Raja, who is of Gujarati heritage, has opened up her constituency office in the city for those affected by the tragedy.
&ldquo;This flight route is very popular amongst the British Gujarati community, and many have been left understandably shaken by today's horrific events. My office remains open to support local residents who have been impacted,&rdquo; said the Conservative Party MP.
Fellow Gujarati-origin Tory MP and shadow foreign secretary Priti Patel also expressed her concerns for the victims and &ldquo;British nationals involved&rdquo; in Parliament.

The meeting was held at the GujSail building near the city airport.
During the meeting, PM Modi was briefed about the series of events that unfolded after the plane crash in which 265 people lost their lives on Thursday, and he also gave instructions to officials.
Earlier, the PM visited the site of the Air India plane crash and met the injured victims at the civil hospital.
Modi arrived at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Airport in the morning and drove straight to the plane crash site, officials said.
He spent around 20 minutes inspecting the site, where the Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft (AI171) crashed into a complex of B J Medical College in the Meghaninagar area shortly after taking off on Thursday afternoon.

Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu and Gujarat Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi informed the prime minister about how the plane crashed into the college hostel and mess.

The 68-year-old leader Rupani was on his way to London to meet his family. He was among the 242 people on board the ill-fated Boeing 787 Dreamliner, which crashed into a residential area in Meghani Nagar shortly after takeoff. Only one person survived the crash and is currently undergoing treatment in a hospital.
Union Minister CR Paatil confirmed the news of Rupani&rsquo;s demise while speaking to reporters. &ldquo;Our leader and former Chief Minister, Vijay Rupani, was going (to London) to meet his family. He is also a victim of this incident. May his soul rest in peace. This is a big loss for the BJP,&rdquo; he said.
Early Life and Education
Vijay Rupani was born to Mayaben and Ramniklal Rupani in Yangon, Myanmar, in a Jain Bania family. He was the seventh and youngest son.
Due to political instability in Myanmar, the Rupani family moved to Rajkot in 1960. Rupani completed his undergraduate degree in Arts from Dharmendrasinhji Arts College and went on to study law at Saurashtra University.
Entry Into Politics: From Activist to Mayor
Rupani's political journey began during his college days, when he became an activist with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the RSS.
He actively participated in the Navnirman movement and drew inspiration from Jayaprakash Narayan&rsquo;s anti-corruption crusade. He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party at the age of 24.
In 1975, during the Emergency, Rupani was imprisoned for protesting against the government and spent one year in Bhavnagar jail.
His formal political career started in 1987 when he was elected as a corporator in the Rajkot Municipal Corporation. He later became the mayor of Rajkot for a term between 1996 and 1997.
Rupani served as a member of the Rajya Sabha from 2006 to 2012 and was known for his quiet but persistent presence in Gujarat&rsquo;s political circles.
Rise to Chief Ministership
Rupani&rsquo;s steady rise within the BJP led him to win the Assembly by-election from Rajkot West in 2014. In February 2016, he was appointed the state BJP president.
Following Anandiben Patel&rsquo;s resignation in August 2016, Rupani was chosen to take over as Gujarat&rsquo;s Chief Minister. Known for his composed demeanour and low-profile style, Rupani led the state through a turbulent period marked by social unrest and political dissent.
He managed to retain BJP's leadership in Gujarat during the 2017 assembly elections, even as the party&rsquo;s seat count dropped below 100 for the first time in years. He continued to serve as Chief Minister until September 2021.
Key Roles Before CM Tenure
Before assuming the role of Chief Minister, Rupani served as the chair of the Gujarat Tourism Development Corporation in 2006.
During his tenure, the state launched the widely recognised &ldquo;Khushboo Gujarat Ki&rdquo; campaign featuring Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan.
He also held the position of chairman of the Gujarat Municipal Finance Board in 2013. These roles underscored his administrative capabilities and laid the groundwork for his leadership at the state level.
Resignation and Legacy
In September 2021, Vijay Rupani stepped down from the Chief Minister&rsquo;s post ahead of the 2022 state assembly elections, making way for Bhupendra Patel. Despite his resignation, he remained a respected figure within the party and among peers.

A London-bound Air India plane carrying 242 passengers and crew crashed in a residential area here minutes after taking off from the Ahmedabad airport on Thursday afternoon. Many people were feared killed.
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft (AI171) could be seen from afar, losing altitude rapidly and crashing in a ball of fire that sent plumes of thick black smoke spiralling up in the air.
The aircraft carrying 232 passengers and 10 crew crashed in Meghaninagar area near the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport around 2 pm.
Meanwhile, Ahmedabad Police issued a list of 25 injured in plane crash in Ahmedabad.

Additional Chief Secretary of Gujarat Health Department says, "Ahmedabd Civil Hospital students' hostel, staff quarters and other residential areas are located in the area where the plane crashed. About 50 of those injured have been brought to Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad."
The pilot of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner issued a 'Mayday' distress call, denoting a full emergency, soon after takeoff, the Air Traffic Control at Ahmedabad said.
Former Gujarat chief minister and BJP leader Vijay Rupani was reported to be among the 230 passengers and 12 crew members on the doomed flight from Ahmedabad to London&rsquo;s Gatwick airport.
The plane crashed into the residential quarters of BJ Medical College doctors in Ahmedabad&rsquo;s Meghaninagar area shortly after take-off, according to eyewitnesses. The crash reportedly caused significant damage to buildings in the complex.
Aviation sources said the aircraft climbed just about 600-800 feet before it plummeted to the ground.
Eyewitness Haresh Shah told PTI that the aircraft was flying unusually low before crashing into the multi-storey residential blocks.
&ldquo;There are several five-floor buildings which serve as residential quarters. Many people in those apartments were injured as the buildings also caught fire,&rdquo; Shah said.
Another witness noted that the impact also led to several parked cars and vehicles catching fire.
While injuries have been reported by those present at the scene, there is no official confirmation yet regarding casualties among residents.
The residential complex is located close to the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.
Many of those injured were taken to the city civil hospital nearby.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu, asking them to go to Ahmedabad and ensure all possible assistance to those affected in the tragedy, sources said.
Visuals from the area showed mangled metal of the wreckage, snarls of tangled wire and smoke rising from the charred remnants.
The ill-fated flight was under the command of Capt Sumeet Sabharwal along with First Officer Clive Kundar. While Sabharwal has 8,200 hours of flying experience, Kundar 1,100 hours, the DGCA said in a statement.
Immediately after departure from Runway 23, the aircraft fell on the ground outside the airport perimeter, it said.

The flight, which departed from Ahmedabad at 1338 hrs, was carrying 242 passengers and crew members onboard the Boeing 787-8 aircraft, Air India said in a statement on social media platform 'X'.
"Of these, 169 are Indian nationals, 53 are British nationals, 1 Canadian national and 7 Portuguese nationals," it said.
The injured are being taken to the nearest hospitals, the airline said.
"We have also set up a dedicated passenger hotline number 1800 5691 444 to provide more information," it said.
Air India also said that it is giving its full cooperation to the authorities investigating the incident.&nbsp;
Meanwhile, Air India changed its profile picture on X to black after the plane crash.

A London-bound Air India flight carrying 242 people crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad&rsquo;s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Thursday afternoon.&nbsp;
The Boeing aircraft crashed in the Meghaninagar area near the airport around 2 PM. Several casualties are feared. Leaders across the political spectrum reacted to the incident, expressing concern, condolences, and calls for rescue efforts.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was &ldquo;stunned and saddened&rdquo; by the incident. &ldquo;It is heartbreaking beyond words,&rdquo; he stated, adding that he was in constant touch with ministers and officials overseeing the response.

A 28-year-old man was arrested in Mumbai for allegedly killing his wife in Ahmedabad, an official said on Wednesday.
Accused Anil, alias Bobby Jangam, and his wife, Reena Verma, are from Ghatkopar, an eastern suburb of Mumbai, and had gone to the Gujarat city for some work.
Jangam allegedly killed Reena on Tuesday morning following a dispute and fled to Mumbai, the official said.
After learning about the murder, the Ahmedabad police tracked his mobile phone and informed their Mumbai counterparts that he was hiding in Ramabai Nagar, Ghatkopar, in the metropolis.
A team from the Pantnagar police station then took Jangam into custody and handed him over to the Gujarat police, the official said.

Three workers died after they inhaled a toxic gas while cleaning a septic tank at a factory in Gujarat's Ahmedabad city on Friday, police said.
The workers were cleaning an underground septic tank in a jeans-washing unit in the Danilimda area in the morning, Assistant Commissioner of Police Y. A. Gohil said.
He said workers Prakash Parmar, Vishal Thakor, and Sunil Rathva died of asphyxiation as soon as they entered the tank.
The official said the unit had remained shut for some time, and the owner wanted to restart the facility and had hired a contractor to clean the septic tank.
"Our probe revealed that one worker fell unconscious after he entered the tank, and the others followed to see what had happened to him. The trio was rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared them dead," Gohil said.
He said the bodies were sent for postmortem, and a first information report will be registered against the contractor and unit owner for causing death by negligence, as the victims were not provided any safety equipment.

Gill anchored India's innings en route to his seventh ODI ton &mdash; 112 off 104 balls (14x4s, 3x6s) which also took his average past 60 in the format &mdash; while putting on two century stands with Kohli and Iyer to consolidate for India, who finished at 356 all-out.&nbsp;

While his stroke play was compelling in the run-a-ball fifty for his 73rd half-century, there were elements of struggle against England leg-spinner Adil Rashid. When Kohli was on 38, he survived a leg-before appeal as an attempted flick was missed and the ball had crashed into his pads.&nbsp;
The replays showed the ball had pitched just outside the line of leg-stump. But Rashid continued to have wood over Kohli as soon after he raised his bat for fifty, the England spinner had him caught behind on a loopy delivery which turned away and took an edge before settling in the wicketkeeper&rsquo;s gloves.&nbsp;
This was the fifth time Rashid has dismissed Kohli in ODIs. Kohli was stranded 37 runs short of becoming only the third batter ever to make 14,000 ODI runs, missing a personal landmark like his teammate Rohit Sharma earlier in the innings. Prime Minister Narendra Modi acknowledged the importance of the concert, saying, "You must have seen fabulous pictures of the Coldplay concert organised in Mumbai and Ahmedabad. This event adds to Gujarat&rsquo;s growing reputation as a prime hub for international events, which already includes successful hosting of the G-20 Summit and the Cricket World Cup in 2023.&nbsp;

In addition to the concert&rsquo;s success, Ahmedabad&rsquo;s metro saw an incredible spike in ridership. Over two days, the metro recorded 4,05,264 passengers, surpassing numbers from other major sporting events. The concert generated Rs 66 lakh in metro revenue, exceeding figures from the 2023 Cricket World Cup and IPL events.
The concert&rsquo;s security and logistical efforts were noteworthy, with more than 1,800 police personnel deployed to ensure a safe experience.&nbsp;
To maintain security, the venue was monitored using advanced CCTV systems, and two dedicated control rooms were established.&nbsp;
Waste management was also handled efficiently, with over 1,500 tons of waste cleared within 48 hours, thanks to 492 sanitation workers, 14 JCB machines, and 27 trucks.
The Coldplay concert also provided a significant economic boost to the local economy, with over 900 flights arriving at Ahmedabad International Airport in just three days. Visitors from across the country and the world not only attended the concert but also explored the city's cultural landmarks.&nbsp;
This influx of visitors benefitted local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, and street vendors.
Coldplay&rsquo;s India leg of the Music of the Spheres tour started on January 16, 2025. Their final show at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Republic Day was a spectacular conclusion.&nbsp;

The day is dedicated to acts of charity and devotion, and traditional dishes like sesame-jaggery laddus and khichdi are enjoyed. Kite flying, symbolizing energy and joy, is a key tradition during this festival.
In Prayagraj, the first Amrit Snan of Maha Kumbh 2025 also coincided with Makar Sankranti. Sadhus from the Mahanirvani Panchayati Akhada took a holy dip at the Triveni Sangam. Uttar Pradesh Principal Secretary of Urban Development Amrit Abhijat reported that nearly twenty million devotees participated in the first 'Amrit Snan' of the Maha Kumbh on this auspicious day.

A two-month-old boy from Rajasthan was diagnosed with Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) at an Ahmedabad hospital. Gujarat's Health Minister assures no panic as preparations are made to address the viral infection.

A two-month-old boy admitted to a private hospital in Ahmedabad has been detected with Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) infection, an official said on Monday.
Gujarat Health Minister Rushikesh Patel asked people not to panic and said the state government has made preparations to tackle the viral infection.
The infant, who hails from Dungarpur in Rajasthan, was admitted to the hospital, located in Chandkheda locality here, on December 24 with symptoms of respiratory infection.
After tests, he was found positive for the HMPV, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's in-charge medical officer of health Bhavin Solanki said.
"HMPV (infection) was detected in the patient on December 26, but we learnt about it today as the private hospital reported it to us late," Solanki said.
The patient was kept in isolation, the official said.
Earlier, the child was kept on a ventilator, and his condition is stable now, Solanki said.
Before this, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has detected two cases of HMPV in Karnataka through routine surveillance for multiple respiratory viral pathogens.
Patel said the state Health and Family Welfare Department is on alert and has made preparations and arrangements to tackle this viral infection.
"As part of the precautionary measures, the health department held a meeting on January 4 and instructed every chief district health officer, civil surgeon, superintendents of sub-district hospitals in the state to pay full attention to matters related to the infection of this virus," he said.
Arrangements will be made for the diagnosis of HMPV in various government hospitals, the minister said.
He asked people not to panic, but understand the viral infection symptoms and take measures accordingly.
The Union health ministry has emphasised that HMPV is already in circulation globally, including in India, and cases of respiratory illnesses associated with it have been reported in various countries.
Furthermore, based on the current data from the ICMR and the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) network, there has been no unusual surge in Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) or Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) cases in the country, it said.
Amid reports of rising cases of respiratory illnesses in China in the past few weeks, a meeting of the Joint Monitoring Group (JMG) was held under the chairmanship of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Saturday.

Seven traffic police officers have been fired after a Delhi man's video went viral. He accused them of demanding hefty bribes.

Gujarat Police has suspended three police personnel and terminated the services of seven Traffic Brigade (TRB) staffers for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 20,000 from a Delhi-based businessman for carrying a liquor bottle in his car, an official said.
The action came after businessman Kanav Manchanda posted a video accusing police personnel of extracting Rs 20,000 from him during his city visit on Sunday, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic-East), Safin Hasan, said on Tuesday.
Although Manchanda, who came to Ahmedabad from Delhi to watch the final match of the ICC World Cup on Sunday in his car, did not lodge any formal complaint, the police took cognisance of his viral video and took action against 10 cops who were allegedly involved in the act, Hasan said.
"While we have already ordered a detailed inquiry into the alleged incident, our preliminary probe revealed this incident did take place. We have suspended three of our policemen and terminated the services of seven TRB jawans for their alleged role. The suspended cops include one head constable and two constables," the DCP said.
In the video, Manchanda said he was stopped by some policemen at Nana Chiloda circle on the outskirts of the city on Sunday morning when he was on his way to the Narendra Modi Stadium in his car.
Since he was carrying a liquor bottle in his car, police allegedly asked him to pay a bribe promising that no action would be taken against him considering that Gujarat is a dry state. Finally, the policemen settled for Rs 20,000, which Manchanda claimed to have paid through UPI.
To back his claim, Manchanda shared the screenshot of his mobile phone which suggested that he had paid Rs 20,000 to one Arun Hadiyol as directed by the cops.
"Since the victim has not lodged any complaint, we have sent our team to Delhi to take his detailed statement and also a formal complaint if he wishes to. The person who received the money through UPI will also be called for investigation," Hasan said.

According to a new report released by Knight Frank, India's leading property consultant, Ahmedabad is the most affordable Indian city to reside in.&nbsp;&nbsp;
The affordability index published by Knight Frank evaluates the affordability of living in a particular city by considering the EMIs required for a resident to purchase a home using a loan. This cost is then divided by the total income of an average household within that city.
So, a Knight Frank Affordability index level of 40% for a city implies that on average, households in that city need to spend 40% of their income to fund the EMI of housing loan for that unit.
An EMI ratio over 50% is considered unaffordable as it is the limit beyond which banks rarely underwrite a mortgage.&nbsp;
Whereas, on the other hand, Mumbai is the most expensive housing market. The home loan EMI ratio is a whopping 55% means that the average household needs to pay more than half its income.&nbsp;
Hyderabad is the 2nd most expensive city, Delhi marks as the 3rd, Tamil Nadu 4th and Pune, stands at the 5th position.&nbsp;
