Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury claimed Prime Minister Narendra Modi is rattled by the strong challenge put forth by the opposition INDIA bloc, in an interview with the Indian Express.
"There is no Pulwama, no ultra-nationalism, and people&rsquo;s mood is not like it was after Balakot. Ram Mandir, which Modi expected would be a big issue, is having no effect on the ground, even in the Hindi belt," Chowdhury said.
"Across India, Modi&rsquo;s aura, the euphoria, and jingoism are withering away," he said, adding that it would not be a "cakewalk" for Modi this time.
Chowdhury has been winning from the Berhampore Lok Sabha constituency since 1999. This time, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) -- fighting separately from Congress in West Bengal, despite being part of the INDIA bloc nationally -- has fielded former cricketer Yusuf Pathan from Chowdhury's stronghold.
When asked about his opponent, Chowdhury said Pathan wasn't the issue. "My fight is against Mamata Banerjee and the BJP juggernaut," he said.

Following Sam Pitroda's resignation as Chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress amid controversy over his alleged 'racist' remark, the BJP launched a scathing attack on another Congress leader, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, for his response to Pitroda's statement. Chowdhury's characterisation of Pitroda's remarks as his personal opinion drew criticism from the saffron party, which also condemned Chowdhury's use of 'offensive' language in defense of Pitroda.
In a statement to ANI on Wednesday, Chowdhury said, "We have Proto Australoids, Mongoloid class, Negrita class of people. Hai to hai (It is how it is). Reacting to Chowdhury's statement, BJP's national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla criticised his choice of words, asserting that while the derogatory terms were uttered by Pitroda, the underlying sentiment reflects the Congress ideology.

Sources said the Lower House will be adjourned after taking up a few matters, including Zero Hour.
The session which began on September 14, witnessed passage of several bills in both Houses, including those which sought to replace ordinances issued recently. The decision to curtail the session has been conveyed to floor leaders of parties in the lower house, the sources said.
The Monsoon Session was otherwise scheduled to end on October 1.
Several MPs, including a few ministers, have tested positive for COVID-19 in the last few days.
On Monday, eight members of Rajya Sabha were suspended over their "unruly behaviour" during the passage of the two key farm bills on Sunday.
A number of opposition parties on Tuesday staged a walkout from Rajya Sabha and decided to boycott proceedings of the House till the suspension of the eight members is revoked, even as the government insisted on their apology.
In Lok Sabha too, various opposition parties, including the Congress and the TMC boycotted the House in solidarity with the suspended Rajya Sabha members.
