WB post-poll violence: SC agrees to hear plea seeking President’s Rule in the state

The Supreme Court has agreed to hear a PIL seeking direction to the Centre to impose President’s Rule in West Bengal. The plea also seeks direction to the Centre to deploy armed forces to help administrative authorities to maintain normalcy and check the law and order situation post assembly poll violence in the state.

A request for a Special Investigation Team has also been made to probe into the causes and reasons behind the violence.

The Court has issued notice to the Centre, West Bengal government and the Election Commission. The Court however denied issuing a notice to Mamata Banerjee as a respondent in the case.

The plea states that there has been targeted communal violence against Hindus after the polls and thousands of residents of West Bengal are being terrorized, penalised and tortured by the workers of TMC for supporting BJP in the elections.

The Supreme Court is already hearing pleas in regard to the post-poll violence in West Bengal and has also ordered a committee to do an independent inquiry.
