The Economic Survey 2024-25 highlights the negative effects of long work hours on mental well-being and productivity, citing studies that link excessive desk time to distress and health issues.

Amid a debate over 70-90-hour work week, the pre-Budget Economic Survey 2024-25 on Friday (January 31, 2025) cited studies to state that spending more than 60 hours a week on work could have adverse health effects.
The Survey noted that spending long hours at one's desk is detrimental to mental well-being and individuals who spend 12 or more hours (per day) at a desk have distressed or struggling levels of mental well-being.
"While the hours spent at work are informally considered a measure of productivity, a previous study has documented adverse health effects when hours exceed 55-60 per week," the Survey said, citing findings by Pega F, Nafradi B (2021) and 'A systematic analysis from the WHO/ILO Joint Estimates of the Work-related Burden of Disease and Injury'.
Citing data from a study done by the Sapien Labs Centre for Human Brain and Mind, the Economic Survey, said, "Spending long hours at one's desk is equally detrimental to mental well-being. Individuals who spend 12 or more hours at a desk have distressed/struggling levels of mental well-being, with a mental well-being score approximately 100 points lower than those who spend less than or equal to two hours at a desk."
Citing the study, the Survey said better lifestyle choices, workplace cultures and family relationships are associated with 2-3 fewer days lost per month at work. &ldquo;Having poor relationships with managers and low (worst) pride and purpose at work are associated with the largest increases in the number of days one is unable to work,&rdquo; the Survey said.
The Survey, however, pointed out that multiple factors affect productivity stating that even in jobs with the best managerial relationships, about five days per month are lost "because workplace culture is but one factor (among several) in the determination of productivity (and mental well-being)."
Citing a study by WHO, the Survey said that globally, about 12 billion days are lost annually owing to depression and anxiety, amounting to a financial loss of $1 trillion. "In Rupee terms, this translates to about ₹7,000 per day," it noted.
The take by the Economic Survey 2024-25 on work-hour week comes weeks after Larsen &amp; Toubro Limited chairman and Managing Director S.N. Subrahmanyan sparked off a raging debate on social media when he said employees should work 90-hour a week, including on Sundays rather than sit at home.
He followed Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy's suggestion of a 70-hour workweek and Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani's "biwi bhaag jayegi (wife will run away)" remark if one spent more than eight hours at home.
However, Mr. Subrahmanyan drew criticism from some peers in the business community. RPG Group Chairman Harsh Goenka said longer working hours was a recipe for burnout and not success. Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra also asserted that focus should be on the quality of work and productivity rather than the amount of time spent working.
Similarly, ITC Limited chairman Sanjiv Puri stated that empowering employees to realise their potential and accomplish their jobs well was more important than the number of hours put in. The work-life balance debate echoes a similar one in China where the so-called '996 culture' &mdash; the three digits describe a punishing schedule of 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. six days a week &mdash; is being hotly debated.
Citing other studies, the Economic Survey noted that if India's economic ambitions are to be met, then immediate attention must be given to lifestyle choices that are often made during childhood and youth.
&ldquo;Furthermore, hostile work cultures and excessive hours spent working at the desk can adversely affect mental well-being and ultimately put the brakes on the pace of economic growth,&rdquo; it added.

Published in the journal Food Frontiers, the study also found higher blood pressure and inflammation levels, along with lower levels of &lsquo;good&rsquo; cholesterol (HDL), in vegetarians who ate plant-based meat alternatives.
Researchers at the University of Surrey, UK, analysed data from over 3,300 vegetarians in the UK Biobank&mdash;about half were consumers of plant-based meat alternatives, and half were non-consumers.
Made using plant-based proteins such as soy, plant-based meat alternatives (PBMA) are considered a potential solution for sustainability, as fewer natural resources such as water, land and energy are required to produce them compared to animal meat.
However, these meat alternatives are also considered 'ultra-processed foods,' as chemicals are often added to make them taste like meat.
The researchers noted that while consuming plant-based meat alternatives was not linked with clear health benefits, more studies are needed to investigate concerns related to inflammation, which may arise from eating these products.
"In conclusion, while no clear health risks or benefits were associated with PBMA consumption in vegetarians, the higher risk of depression, elevated CRP (C-reactive proteins), and lower apolipoprotein A levels (HDL cholesterol) in consumers of PBMA suggest potential inflammatory concerns that warrant further investigation,&rdquo; the authors wrote.
Co-author Anthony Whetton, a professor of translational biosystems at the University of Surrey, said, "Ultra-processed plant-based meat alternatives can be a useful way for people to transition to a vegetarian diet effectively, which helps with sustainable agricultural practices."
"Further research, including longitudinal studies and trials with more diverse populations, is necessary to confirm these findings and the relationship between vegetarian foods and mood," Whetton added.
In the study group, the researchers found no notable differences in the intake of sodium, free sugars, total sugars, or saturated fatty acids between vegetarians who ate plant-based meat alternatives and those who did not.
The team also found that consuming plant-based meat alternatives was linked to a 40% lower risk of irritable bowel syndrome.
"The overall findings are reassuring, suggesting that plant-based meat alternatives may be a safe option when they are part of an overall balanced diet. However, the potential link between these foods, inflammation, and depression warrants further investigation," said senior author Nophar Geifman, a professor of health and biomedical informatics at the University of Surrey.

A new study based on India's NFHS-5 data links PM2.5 exposure and climate conditions during pregnancy to premature and low-weight births, especially in North India.

India's demographic health survey 2019-21 reveals that 13 per cent of children were born prematurely, and 17 per cent with a low weight at birth, with air pollution contributing to the adverse birth outcomes.
Researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, International Institute for Population Sciences, Mumbai, and institutes in the UK and Ireland looked at the National Family Health Survey-5 and remote sensing data to analyse how exposure to air pollution in pregnancy impacted the delivery outcomes.
The team found that an increased exposure to PM2.5 during pregnancy was related with a 40 per cent chance of low birth weight, and 70 per cent of premature delivery.
Climate conditions, such as rainfall and temperature, were found to have a greater link with adverse birth outcomes.
The study, published in the journal PLoS Global Public Health, also found that children living in the northern districts of India could be more vulnerable to the ambient air pollution.
Measuring under 2.5 microns in diameter, fine particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5) is considered among the most harmful air pollutants, sources of which include burning of fossil fuels and biomass.
The researchers found higher levels of PM2.5 pollutants over the upper Gangetic region, covering states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Delhi, Punjab and Haryana, and lower levels in the country's southern and north-eastern regions.
A higher prevalence of premature births was seen in northern states, such as Himachal Pradesh (39 per cent), Uttarakhand (27 per cent), Rajasthan (18 per cent), and Delhi (17 per cent).
Mizoram, Manipur and Tripura exhibited a lower prevalence of the trend.
Punjab was found to have the highest prevalence of lower birth weight at 22 per cent, followed by Delhi, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh.
North-east India fared far better on the metric, the authors said.
"Utilising data from the national family health survey and raster images, the study employs various statistical analyses and spatial models to elucidate the connection between in-utero exposure to air pollution and birth outcomes," the authors wrote.
They "observed that approximately 13 per cent of children were born prematurely, and 17 per cent were born with low birth weight." Further, an increase of 10 microgram per cubic metre in PM2.5 exposure was associated with an increase of five per cent in the prevalence of low birth weight, and 12 per cent in premature birth.
The team added that 18 per cent of children born in the five years preceding the National Family Health Survey-5 had a low weight at birth.
The authors called for targeted interventions, especially in the northern districts, and an intensification of the National Clean Air Program.
Launched in 2019, the programme is aimed at improving air quality in India by addressing PM levels.
The researchers also advocated for climate adaptation strategies, such as heat action plans and water management, to be included in public health planning.
Awareness of risks due to air pollution and climate change should be raised as part of public health initiatives, especially among pregnant women, the team said.

Nowadays, whenever an aircraft flies over Meghaninagar, an area located near the Ahmedabad airport, Mangilal Parmar, a local resident, is gripped by fear and anxiety.
This was not the case till a week ago, but everything changed for residents of localities near the airport on June 12 when an Air India plane bound for London experienced a rapid descent and smashed into a medical hostel complex in Meghaninagar and burst into flames, killing 270 people and leaving behind chilling images that will take years to fade away from memory.
People residing in crowded neighbourhoods near the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport are a terrified lot because memories of the plane crash and loss of lives continue to haunt them one week on as they struggle to overcome the trauma and go about their daily life.
While some residents are mulling to move elsewhere, some fear the crash may affect property prices in areas, which fall directly under the flight path like Meghaninagar and Asarwa, and also make homes unattractive for renting out.
For lower-middle class residents of Laxminagar, Omkarnagar and Saraswatinagar -- localities situated barely a kilometer away from the crash site -- the air disaster has only added to their woes as their areas already lacked basic amenities such as proper roads and sanitation.
"There are no proper roads here. Waterlogging and potholes make it difficult for us to walk (especially during rains). Now, this plane crash has added to our woes. Earlier, we had to walk only by looking down (to avoid potholes), now we have to look up also because whenever a plane passes above us, we fear it will crash on us," said Parmar, a resident of Meghaninagar.
Another resident came up with his own analysis about what has changed after the disaster. According to him, planes have stopped flying too low after the crash when an Air India plane, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner (AI-171), with 242 people on board, crashed into the complex moments after taking off from the airport. All but one on board the plane and 29 on the ground perished in the tragedy.
"As if the jarring sound of aircraft passing overhead was not enough, we now have to worry about planes falling on us. Every passing plane reminds us about that crash. Though one week has passed, we can't stop thinking about it. The only respite is that planes have stopped flying too low after that crash," said Arun Kalal, a local resident.
While some house owners fear property prices may go down, some are worried they may not get tenants for their homes as people may avoid these areas out of fear.
"I have heard some tenants are mulling to move elsewhere after the crash. Despite the area being in bad shape, people chose to live here because of low rent. But, after this incident, some may think of shifting. This could affect property prices as well as existing rent rates," said Gajendra, an auto-rickshaw driver.
Some of the local women claimed their relatives who live in other towns and cities are more concerned than they are.
"Fear still grips us whenever we hear the sound of an aircraft. Women are more scared because we stay at home all the time and see over 100 planes fly above us in a day. After that incident, our relatives keep calling us every other day and enquire about our well-being. They are more worried than us," said a woman.

Anti-obesity injections may have smaller effects on weight loss in a real-world context compared to clinical trials, as patients tend to discontinue treatment or use a lower maintenance dose, a study in US patients has found.
Semaglutide, sold under the brand names Wegovy and Ozempic, and tirzepatide (Zepbound and Mounjaro) are prescribed for weight management and treating type 2 diabetes by helping patients regulate blood sugar.
The study, published in the Obesity Journal, examined the effects of anti-obesity injectables on weight reduction and blood sugar regulation (glycaemic control) in a real-world setting.
"Our study shows that patients treated for obesity with semaglutide or tirzepatide lost less weight on average in a regular clinical setting compared to what is observed in randomised clinical trials," lead author Dr Hamlet Gasoyan, a researcher with the Cleveland Clinic, US, said.
"According to our data, this could be explained by higher rates of discontinuation and lower maintenance dosages used in clinical practice, compared to randomised clinical trial settings," Dr Gasoyan said.
The researchers examined 7,881 adult patients with an average body mass index (BMI) of over 39 -- classified as 'severe obesity'. Of these, 1,320 had pre-diabetes at the start of the study, which meant they were at a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
The participants were started on obesity treatments between 2021 and 2023 with semaglutide or tirzepatide injectables.
Following up on the participants a year after starting with the treatment, the average weight loss among those who discontinued injections within three months was 3.6 per cent, compared to 6.8 per cent in those who discontinued within 3-12 months.
"Mean percentage weight reduction at one year was 8.7 per cent, and it was 3.6 per cent with early discontinuation (three months), 6.8 per cent with late discontinuation (3-12 months) and 11.9 per cent with no discontinuation," the authors wrote.
Furthermore, those on a high-maintenance dosage -- the amount required to sustain the effects of the medication -- lost 13.7 per cent of their body weight with semaglutide and 18 per cent with tirzepatide, the researchers said.
Among the participants having pre-diabetes, 33 per cent of those who stopped taking injections within three months experienced normal blood sugar levels, compared to 41 per cent who discontinued within 3-12 months, and 67.9 per cent of those who did not discontinue treatment.
"The average weight reduction in this cohort was lower than that observed in the main phase 3 (clinical) trials, likely because of higher rates of discontinuation and lower maintenance dosages," the team wrote.
They identified that those not discontinuing medications or taking a high-maintenance dose were among the factors related to more chances of losing at least 10 per cent of one's body weight in a year.
Overall, over a fifth of the study group was found to have discontinued their medications within three months of the study's start, while 32 per cent discontinued within 3-12 months.
Reasons for discontinuing treatment included costs and insurance-related issues, side effects and medication shortages, the researchers said.

Ahead of adjourning the House, Speaker Om Birla underscored the importance of maintaining decorum.
"Members should adhere to high standards of conduct," Birla noted, referencing Rule 349, which outlines expected behavior in the House. His comments followed last week's uproar when Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke on the Maha Kumbh, highlighting the event as a testament to India's global capabilities.
As Modi spoke, Opposition members protested, raising concerns over the Prayagraj stampede casualties. Despite the uproar, Speaker Birla invoked Rule 372, which permits the Prime Minister or any minister to make statements unchallenged.
Reflecting on the session, Gandhi expressed his earnest intentions to reinforce Modi's message on the cultural significance of Kumbh while highlighting the lack of attention to those who perished.
"While Kumbh represents our heritage, the Prime Minister should have acknowledged the tragedy as well," Gandhi said. He also noted that the event should have been an opportunity to discuss job prospects for young attendees.
Addressing the persistent challenges in speaking, he added, "In a democratic setup, the Leader of the Opposition should be heard. But this is the reality in what they call New India."

In a disturbing incident of cybercrime in Gurugram, a 15-year-old student fell prey to blackmail involving doctored images, leading her to unwittingly transfer Rs 80 lakh from her grandmother's online bank account.
The teenager, terrified by threats to expose these manipulated images, accessed the account after a substantial land sale deposit had been made.
This shocking crime has resulted in six arrests since the investigation began in December of the previous year, with the most recent arrest occurring just yesterday.
In the process, authorities have retrieved the grandmother's debit card and a portion of the stolen funds, amounting to Rs 5 lakh. Thus far, Rs 36 lakh has been recovered, and police efforts to crack the case continue.
The ordeal commenced when the Class 9 girl's grandmother, aged 75, reported the crime to the Sector 10 police station.
According to her account, the granddaughter, having knowledge of the significant bank balance, unknowingly became a target. The blackmail scheme unraveled when, in a casual conversation, the teen shared details of the access to the account after her grandmother sold a piece of land.
The information circulated within her school, reaching a Class X student who subsequently involved his elder brother. This brother then collaborated with an accomplice, who masterminded the conspiracy.
Sumit Kataria, a 20-year-old now under arrest, initiated contact with the girl online and allegedly manipulated her images.
He issued threats to disseminate the photos unless payments were made.
As the girl transferred the money in installments to various contact numbers supplied by the perpetrators, the account was eventually drained.
One of the offenders even confronted the girl at her coaching center, which ultimately led to the unveiling of the crime.
Observing her distress, a teacher inquired and subsequently informed her family, prompting the grandmother to involve law enforcement. The ongoing investigation has been fueled by these alarming developments.
