A recent decision by the US and China to suspend their tariff hikes for 90 days presents both challenges and opportunities for India, according to exporters.
The two countries have reached an agreement to significantly reduce most of their recent tariffs or import duties for 90 days, as they are in talks to resolve their trade disputes.
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer has said the US agreed to reduce its 145 per cent tariff on Chinese goods by 115 percentage points to 30 per cent, while China agreed to cut the rates to 10 per cent.
Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) President SC Ralhan said the announcement reflects a significant thaw in trade tensions between the two largest economies.
"While such developments are broadly positive for global trade stability, they present both challenges and opportunities for India," he said, adding that the reduction in tariffs will likely result in a surge of US-China bilateral trade in high-value segments like electronics, machinery, and chemicals.
This may intensify competition for Indian exporters in markets like Southeast Asia, Africa, and Latin America, where India has recently made inroads, capitalising on US-China trade disruptions, he noted.
However, Ralhan said, India can leverage this shift to strengthen exports in sectors that remain relatively insulated from US-China trade, such as pharmaceutical APIs, gems and jewellery, engineering goods, organic chemicals and IT-enabled services.
"India must proactively engage with the US to secure and expand its preferential trade access, emphasising its role as a reliable alternate sourcing destination," he added.
The temporary nature of the tariff cuts may lead companies to hedge against future volatility by expanding manufacturing in India under the Make in India and PLI schemes, especially in electronics, auto components, and textiles, Ralhan noted.
Another exporter said the Indian government should keep a close watch on imports from China into India.
Commenting on the issue, think tank GTRI said that even though US tariffs on Indian goods remain at 10 per cent, well below the 30 per cent still imposed on Chinese imports, the massive tariff gap that once favoured India is shrinking fast.
"Just months ago, the US imposed duties of up to 145 per cent on Chinese goods, giving India a major edge in attracting companies looking to relocate. Now, that edge has narrowed dramatically, with the US and China easing tensions and bringing tariffs closer to parity," GTRI Founder Ajay Srivastava said.
He added that this shift risks undermining the "China Plus One" strategy that saw firms move manufacturing to India, Vietnam, and Mexico.
"A smart trade deal with the US could help preserve India's 10 per cent tariff access and prevent any hike to the proposed 26 per cent under US President Donald Trump's new country-specific duties. But beyond trade policy, India must urgently cut production costs, overhaul logistics, and improve regulatory predictability. And as it negotiates future FTAs, India must resist pressure to open up sensitive sectors like automobiles and pharmaceuticals without meaningful reciprocal gains," he added.
The US and China are the largest trading partners of India. While China was India's top trading partner from 2013-14 to 2017-18, and also in 2020-21.
After that, Washington replaced Beijing.
The US accounts for about 18 per cent of India's total goods exports and 6.22 per cent in imports, and 10.73 per cent in bilateral trade. On the other hand, China's share is just about 4 per cent in exports and a staggering 15 per cent in imports.
In the last fiscal, India's exports to the US rose by 11.6 per cent to USD 86.51 billion against USD 77.52 billion in 2023-24. The imports were up by 7.44 per cent in 2024-25 to USD 45.33 billion compared to USD 42.2 billion in 2023-24.
The trade surplus with America touched USD 41.18 billion in the last fiscal from USD 35.32 billion in 2023-24.
In the last fiscal, India's exports to China contracted 14.5 per cent year-on-year to USD 14.25 billion. Imports, however, rose by 11.52 per cent in 2024-25 to USD 113.45 billion from USD 101.73 billion in 2023-24.
The trade deficit has widened to USD 99.2 billion in 2024-25.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin Sunday night promulgated an ordinance amending the Anti-Terrorism Act which prohibits such activities.
The President signed the draft hours after the Council of Advisers or the interim Cabinet led by Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus approved the ordinance to amend the Anti-Terrorism Act-2009.
The law ministry later published the Anti-Terrorism (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025.
The revised law prohibits any form of publicity, including press statements, social media content, or public gatherings in support of such individuals or entities.
The development came a day after the interim administration slapped the ban on the Awami League's activities.
The ban will be in place until a special tribunal completes a trial of the party and its leaders over the deaths of people killed during a three-week uprising led by a student platform last year.
It also broadened the scope of restrictions by replacing the previous reference to "listed individuals or banned entities" with a more general phrase: "any individual or entity against whom action has been taken under sub-section (1) of Section 18" of the anti-terrorism law.
Yunus&rsquo;s office earlier said that since there is no provision in the existing Anti-Terrorism Act on the ban of activities of any entity, it was appropriate and necessary to further amend the 2009 law to make it time-befitting.
Hasina&rsquo;s 16-year-long Awami League regime was toppled on August 5 last year in the student-led violent mass uprising, prompting the 77-year-old former prime minister to flee to India.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said Saturday that federal, state and local officials are investigating the outbreak linked to foods produced by Fresh &amp; Ready Foods LLC of San Fernando, California. The FDA says the 10 people who fell ill were in California and Nevada, and required hospitalization.
The agency said the products were sold in Arizona, California, Nevada and Washington at locations including retailers and food service points of sale, including hospitals, hotels, convenience stores, airports and by airlines.
Listeria symptoms usually start within two weeks of eating contaminated food. Mild cases can include fever, muscle aches, nausea, tiredness, vomiting and diarrhea, while more severe symptoms may include headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions.
Federal officials said they started investigating the recent outbreak last year but didn&rsquo;t have enough evidence to identify a source of the infections. They said the investigation was reopened in April when FDA investigators found listeria in samples collected from Fresh &amp; Ready Foods that matched the strain from the outbreak.

Fresh &amp; Ready Foods said in a news release that it took immediate corrective actions, including removing equipment to address the issue.
The FDA found that six of the 10 people who got sick had been hospitalized before becoming ill with listeria. The FDA found that items made by Fresh &amp; Ready Foods had been served in at least three of the health care facilities where the patients had been previously treated.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that the test samples from sick patients were collected from December 2023 to September 2024.

As India&rsquo;s Operation Sindoor continues to strike and dismantle terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, Islamabad is facing mounting economic pressure and a collapsing stock market.
In response, the Pakistan government had issued a plea to international partners for financial support and assistance in de-escalating tensions.
The request was initially posted through a verified account on social media platform X, attributed to the Economic Affairs Division, Government of Pakistan.

On the military front, tensions escalated further after the Indian Armed Forces successfully repelled a major drone and missile attack on Indian military installations during the night of May 7&ndash;8. The Indian response included targeted strikes on Pakistan's air defence systems.
Speaking at a Ministry of External Affairs briefing on Thursday, Colonel Sofiya Qureshi provided key details of the Indian response: "This morning, the Indian Armed Forces targeted Air Defence Radars and systems at a number of locations in Pakistan. Indian response has been in the same domain with same intensity as Pakistan. It has been reliably learnt that an Air Defence system at Lahore has been neutralised," she said.
"On the night of 07-08 May 2025, Pakistan attempted to engage a number of military targets in Northern and Western India including Awantipura, Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot, Amritsar, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Adampur, Bhatinda, Chandigarh, Nal, Phalodi, Uttarlai, and Bhuj, using drones and missiles. These were neutralised by the Integrated Counter UAS Grid and Air Defence systems. The debris of these attacks is now being recovered from a number of locations that prove the Pakistani attacks."
On the night of May 8&ndash;9, further attempts by Pakistan to launch drone attacks and breach the Line of Control were met with a strong and immediate Indian military response. In an official statement, the Indian Army confirmed the incidents and their actions.
"Pakistan Armed Forces launched multiple attacks using drones and other munitions along the entire Western Border on the intervening night of 08 and 09 May 2025. Pak troops also resorted to numerous ceasefire violations (CFVs) along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. The drone attacks were effectively repulsed, and a befitting reply was given to the CFVs. Indian Army remains committed to safeguarding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Nation. All nefarious designs will be responded with force."
Earlier on Thursday, sources confirmed that the Indian Army had intercepted and neutralised over 50 Pakistani drones as part of a large-scale counter-drone operation conducted along the Line of Control and International Borders.

"But I think the job of diplomacy, but also the job of cooler heads in India and Pakistan is to make sure this doesn't become a nuclear war. If it happened of course it would be disastrous. Right now we don't think that's going to happen," he said.
Vance, Second Lady Usha Vance and their three children were on their first official visit to India when terrorists killed 26 people, mostly tourists, in Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22.
Two weeks after the attack, India launched Operation Sindoor on Wednesday, targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
On Thursday night, India neutralised Pakistan military's attempt to hit military stations in Jammu, Pathankot, Udhampur and some other locations with missiles and drones as tensions soared between the two countries amid fears of a wider military conflict.
After the Indian military foiled the Pakistani attempts, the defence ministry said India remains "fully prepared to defend its sovereignty and ensure the safety of its people".
Earlier on Thursday, Secretary of State Rubio spoke separately with India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, emphasising the need for immediate de-escalation.
In his call with Jaishankar, Rubio expressed US support for direct dialogue between India and Pakistan and encouraged continued efforts to improve communications.
He reiterated his condolences for the horrific terrorist attack in Pahalgam and reaffirmed the US' commitment to work with India in the fight against terrorism.
In his conversation with Sharif, Rubio reiterated his calls for Pakistan to take concrete steps to end any support for terrorist groups.
In a press briefing on Thursday, State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce said Rubio underlined the need for de-escalation in his conversations with Jaishankar and Sharif.
"...at this moment in time, there is like one thing that has to stop, which is a back-and-forth and a continuation of this, and that is what we're focused on right now," she said.
The message from the Secretary of State and from the United States "is that the violence should stop, that military action, war, as we've seen in that region, certainly in the Middle East, has clearly for generations proven that it is not a solution because it never ends.
"There has to be a change in that regard. So obviously, when it comes to solving a problem, this administration has made itself clear, that war, the military, more violence is not a solution. Diplomacy is a solution, new ideas to stop generational violence and problems." Asked if Rubio offered to mediate between the two countries, Bruce said, "We are not going to be speaking about the details. That is certainly our policy." The US continues to urge India and Pakistan to work towards a responsible solution. Washington remains engaged with both governments at multiple levels, she said.
The US wants the perpetrators to be held accountable and are supportive of any efforts to that end, she added.
Bruce told reporters that Rubio underlined that the conflict should not escalate.

The Pakistan army said that at least 26 people were killed and 46 injured in the Indian strikes launched shortly after midnight on cities in the Punjab province and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
&ldquo;Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has declared a state of emergency across the province,&rdquo; a Punjab government statement said here.
All security agencies, including Punjab police, have been placed on high alert. Leaves of all doctors and medical staff across hospitals in Punjab have been cancelled.
The statement said all staff have been ordered to report for duty immediately and district administrations in all districts of Punjab have also been placed on high alert.
Officers and personnel of all relevant institutions, including Civil Defence, have been summoned, it said.
The educational institutions would remain closed on Wednesday, the statement said.
The Pakistan airspace which was closed for all flight operations following the Indian attack is now partially being opened.

The percentage of respiratory samples testing positive for Covid-19 in Hong Kong has recently peaked at its highest level in a year.
Severe cases, including fatalities, have escalated to 31 in the week ending May 3, the highest in roughly a year, according to the center's data. Although the current resurgence has not yet reached the infection peaks experienced over the past two years, increased viral loads detected in sewage and a rise in Covid-related medical consultations and hospitalizations indicate widespread transmission in Hong Kong, a city with over 7 million residents.

&nbsp;US President Donald Trump on Thursday repeated his claim yet again that he &ldquo;helped settle&rdquo; the tensions between India and Pakistan.
"&hellip;And by the way, I don't want to say I did, but I sure as hell helped settle the problem between Pakistan and India last week, which was getting more and more hostile,&rdquo; he said while addressing US military personnel at al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar.
"And all of a sudden, you'll start seeing missiles of a different type. And we got it settled. I hope, I hope I don't walk out of here and two days later find out that it's not settled, but I think it is settled,&rdquo; Trump said.
This is the sixth time since Saturday that Trump has claimed that the US brokered the &ldquo;ceasefire&rdquo; between New Delhi and Islamabad.
India carried out precision strikes under 'Operation Sindoor' on terror infrastructure early on May 7 in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people.

In his address to US troops on Thursday, Trump again claimed that he talked to the countries about &ldquo;trade&rdquo;.
&ldquo;Let's do trade instead of do war. And Pakistan was very happy with that, and India was very happy with that, and I think they're on the way, you know, they have been fighting for about 1,000 years in all fairness,&rdquo; he said as he laughed slightly.

I'm not sure about that. I'm not sure about settling. That's a tough one. They've been fighting for a long time, but we got that settled. Nobody, boy, everybody was very happy. I'll tell you that looked like it was really going to be escalating out of control,&rdquo; he added.
On Saturday, Trump announced that India and Pakistan had agreed to a &ldquo;full and immediate ceasefire&rdquo; after a &ldquo;long night of talks mediated by the United States.&rdquo; Later, in a post on Truth Social, Trump offered to work with India and Pakistan for a &ldquo;solution&rdquo; on Kashmir, while crediting Washington for helping the two nations arrive at the &ldquo;historic and heroic decision&rdquo; of stopping the conflict.

US President Donald Trump on Thursday claimed that India has offered to drop all tariffs on American goods.
Speaking at a business roundtable in Doha, Trump also said he had a "little problem" with Tim Cook, and he told the Apple CEO that he does not want him to build iPhones in India.
Trump, who is in Qatar as part of his four-day visit to the Gulf region, was talking about Apple's plans to make iPhones in India.
"I said to him (Cook), my friend, I am treating you very good. You are coming up with $500 billion, but now I hear you are building all over India. I don't want you building in India. You can build in India, if you want to take care of India because India is one of the highest tariff nations in the world, so it is very hard to sell in India," Trump said.
"They [India] have offered us a deal where basically they have agreed to charge us literally no tariffs. I said 'Tim, we are treating you really good, we put up with all the plants you built in China for years. We are not interested in you building in India. India can take care of themselves'," he added.
There has been no such announcement from India.
Trump's comments came nearly two weeks after Cook said his company made quarterly records in several countries, including India.
Apple will source the majority of the iPhones sold in the US from India in the June quarter, while China will produce the vast majority of the devices for other markets amid uncertainty over tax tariffs, Cook said earlier this month.
According to an analysis by S&amp;P Global, Apple's iPhone sales in the US were 75.9 million units in 2024, with exports in March from India equivalent to 3.1 million units.
Earlier this month, Trump had claimed that India &ldquo;agreed&rdquo; to drop its high tariffs "to nothing&rdquo;.
In the past, Trump has called India &ldquo;tariff king&rdquo; and a &ldquo;big abuser&rdquo;.
Last month, Trump had said negotiations with India over a bilateral trade deal are &ldquo;coming along great&rdquo; and he thinks &ldquo;we&rsquo;ll have a deal with India&rdquo;.
Trump announced sweeping reciprocal tariffs on several countries, including India and China, on April 2. However, on April 9, he announced a 90-day suspension of these tariffs until July 9 this year, except for those on China and Hong Kong, as about 75 countries approached America for trade deals.&nbsp;

The timing is significant. It comes in the aftermath of Operation Sindoor, India's counterstrike after the Pahalgam terror attack, in which 26 innocents were murdered in cold blood.
India has carried out airstrikes against terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir and warned that any terror attack will now be seen as an act of war and draw a tough response.
In his address to the nation yesterday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Operation Sindoor has carved out a new benchmark in India's fight against terrorism and set up a "new normal".
"First, if there is a terrorist attack on India, a fitting reply will be given. We will give a befitting response on our terms only.&nbsp; We will take strict action at every place from where the roots of terrorism emerge.
Secondly, India will not tolerate any nuclear blackmail. India will strike precisely and decisively at the terrorist hideouts developing under the cover of nuclear blackmail," he said.
"Thirdly, we will not differentiate between the government sponsoring terrorism and the masterminds of terrorism. During Operation Sindoor the world has again seen the ugly face of Pakistan, when top Pakistani army officers came to bid farewell to the slain terrorists. This is strong evidence of state-sponsored terrorism. We will continue to take decisive steps to protect India and our citizens from any threat," the Prime Minister said.
On May 7, India carried out airstrikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and PoK and stressed that its offensive only targeted terrorists with precision.
Pakistan, however, responded with heavy shelling that led to civilian deaths and a barrage of drones and missiles targeted at civilian areas. India's air defence managed to intercept most of the projectiles.
In response, India targeted Pakistan's military installations, including its key airbases, inflicting heavy damage. On May 10, a ceasefire was announced, but Indian armed forces have said they are watching Pakistan closely and any misadventure will prompt action.

In a statement, the military also claimed that 40 civilians died and 121 others were injured in the "unprovoked and reprehensible dastardly attacks" by India on the night of May 6-7.
India and Pakistan reached an understanding on Saturday to end the conflict after four days of intense cross-border drone and missile strikes.
While defending the motherland, 11 personnel of Pakistan's armed forces were killed and 78 others were wounded, the Pakistan military said.
The victims from the Pakistan Air Force include Squadron Leader Usman Yousuf, Chief Technician Aurangzeb, Senior Technician Najeeb, Corporal Technician Farooq and Senior Technician Mubashir, it said.
Naik Abdul Rehman, Lance Naik Dilawar Khan, Lance Naik Ikramullah, Naik Waqar Khalid, Sepoy Muhammad Adeel Akbar and Sepoy Nisar were among the army personnel killed in the strikes, it added.
The Pakistan Armed Forces "mounted a resolute response under the banner of 'Marka-e-Haq', delivering precise and notch-up retributive strikes through Operation Bunyanum Marsoos," the statement said.
The military also claimed that 40 civilians, including seven women and 15 children, were killed and 121 others injured in strikes by India on the night of 6-7 May.
In response, the Pakistan Armed Forces "mounted a resolute response under the banner of 'Marka-e-Haq', delivering precise and notch-up retributive strikes through Operation Bunyanum Marsoos," the statement said.
Pakistan's armed forces, together with the people of Pakistan, pay solemn tribute to the deceased civilians and military personnel, it said.
&ldquo;Let there be no ambiguity: any attempt to challenge Pakistan's sovereignty or territorial integrity, ever again, shall be met with a swift, full-spectrum, and decisive response,&rdquo; it said.&nbsp;
