Shillong, Jul 21 (PTI) Meghalaya's burgeoning pool of young karate talent is set to shine as more than 700 participants from 101 schools converge for the 31st State Level Inter School Karate Tournament 2025. The three-day event, organized by the All Meghalaya Karate-Do Association, will be held from July 24 to 26 at the Multipurpose Indoor Hall, SAI, NEHU campus in Shillong.

This year, a record 731 karatekas have registered for the competition, surpassing last year's 609 participants and highlighting the growing interest in karate among the state's school students.

Meghalaya's karate contingent has gained national recognition due to their recent performances. The state team emerged as the overall champions at the National Shoto Cup Karate Championship 2023 in Khandala, securing 109 medals, including 45 gold.

The impressive performance streak continued with 22 medals at the SEIKOKAI All India Karate Championship in February 2024, followed by 32 medals at the All India Independence Karate Championship in August 2024. November 2024 saw the team collecting 12 medals at the Federation Cup Premier League & Youth League Championship held in New Delhi.

Last year's tournament saw St Anthony's Higher Secondary School triumphing in the boys' category, while the girls' title was claimed by Sacred Heart Girls Higher Secondary School.
