Australian Open: Sumit Nagal stuns world no. 27 Alexander Bublik in straight sets, advances to second round

In a stunning display of grit and determination, India's Sumit Nagal became the first Indian to defeat a seeded player at a Grand Slam in 35 years.

Nagal stunned Kazakhstan's Alexander Bublik in straight sets 6-4, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) to advance to the second round of the Australian Open on January 16.

This is the 26-year-old's second win at a Grand Slam Main Draw since 2020 US Open and his 7th Top 100 win.

Earlier, Nagal made waves during his qualifying round against Slovakian Alex Molcan defeating him in straight sets.

This is the biggest upset by an Indian since Ramesh Krishnan downed top-seed Mats Wilander at the 1989 Australian Open.

Nagal will now play his second round game on January 18.
