On April 27, 2021, India's indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) &lsquo;Tejas&rsquo; added fifth generation Python-5 Air-to-Air Missile (AAM) in its weapon inventory. The trials were also aimed to enhance the capability of already integrated Derby Beyond Visual Range (BVR) AAM on Tejas. The Derby missile achieved direct hit on a high speed maneuvering aerial target and the Python missiles also achieved 100 percent hits, thereby validating their complete capability.&nbsp; DRDO tweeted, &ldquo;Tejas, India&rsquo;s indigenous Light Combat Aircraft, added the 5th generation Python-5 Air-to-Air Missile (AAM) in its weapons capability on 27th April 2021. LCA Tejas Gets Python-5

On April 27, 2021, India's indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) &lsquo;Tejas&rsquo; added fifth generation Python-5 Air-to-Air Missile (AAM) in its weapon inventory. The China Daily, PLA&rsquo;s official mouthpiece, reported in an article on April 19, 2021 that China has deployed a multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) and the brigade is located 5,200m above sea level in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region (XUAR). The report did not give the type or firing range of the weapon but said it was a system with a long-range rocket with precision strike capability and had entered service in 2019. Another publication referring to the report in China Daily wrote the move by the PLA is aimed at reinforcing China&rsquo;s border defence and acting as a deterrent to India, saying, &ldquo;An artillery brigade stationed 5,200 metres (17,000 feet) above sea level in Xinjiang military district has intensified its drills using a rocket system during full-wing combat-ready training.&rdquo;

China Deploys Long Range MLRS

The China Daily, PLA&rsquo;s official mouthpiece, reported in an article on April 19, 2021 that China has deployed a multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) and the brigade is located 5,200m above sea level in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region (XUAR). The report did not give the type or firing range of the weapon but said it was a system with a long-range rocket with precision strike capability and had entered service in 2019. Another publication referring to the report in China Daily wrote the move by the PLA is aimed at reinforcing China&rsquo;s border defence and acting as a deterrent to India, saying, &ldquo;An artillery brigade stationed 5,200 metres (17,000 feet) above sea level in Xinjiang military district has intensified its drills using a rocket system during full-wing combat-ready training.&rdquo;

Iran said the RQ-170 drone operating across the border in Afghanistan was electronically commandeered by Iran&rsquo;s cyber warfare unit and made to land at an Iranian airfield by sending false signals to the drone&rsquo;s GPS receiver in order to capture it. US government officials were of the view that this kind of spoofing was not possible. However, several months later Professor Todd Humphreys of Texas University demonstrated how this could be done by spoofing a drone and landing it in the university&rsquo;s football stadium. Following this, US officials admitted spoofing is possible, but denied this happened to the RQ-170 flown by the CIA which was captured by Iran. But the US denial was possibly a face saver because no other explanation of how the drone was captured could be provided.

COVID Speed Breaker for Defence Budget 2021-22

C295 set to replace IAF AVROs

Efforts by the&nbsp;Indian Air Force (IAF)&nbsp; to replace its&nbsp;&nbsp;ageing fleet of 50 HS 748 Avro&nbsp;twin-turboprop&nbsp; aircraft&nbsp; began nearly eight years ago when on&nbsp; July 24, 2012,&nbsp; a Request For Information (RFI)&nbsp; for&nbsp; 56 transport aircraft&nbsp; was issued.&nbsp;&nbsp;Thereafter, in May 2013,&nbsp; a global Request for Proposal (RFP) was issued to which the only response received was from Airbus Defence and Space with the offer of the C-295, a twin-turboprop tactical military transport aircraft. The Indian company to be a partner of the OEM in this project is Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL). The case has now been sent to the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) for final approval which hopefully will be received shortly.

SpaceX’s 25th Launch in 2020; Strengthens Commercial Spaceflight

Despite the pandemic woes, SpaceX seems to be on an upward journey adding new feathers to its cap. On December 13, Falcon 9 launched the SXM-7 mission from Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) at Cape Canaveral Space Station, Florida, marking SpaceX&rsquo;s 25th mission just in 2020. Earlier, SpaceX also received certification from NASA for human spaceflight.

China’s Unmanned Spacecraft Returns to Earth

After successfully landing on moon and collecting samples from the lunar surface, China&rsquo;s unmanned spacecraft, Chang&rsquo;e 5 landed back on Earth on December 17, 2020. The China National Space Administration (CNSA) said in a statement that Chang&rsquo;e 5&rsquo;s re-entry capsule touched down on its landing site in Inner Mongolia autonomous region. The recovery team is making initial processing of the capsule and will then use a plane to transport it to Beijing where it will be opened for technicians to remove the container holding lunar samples.

Communication Satellite Launched

On December 17, 2020, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) C-50 carrying its 42nd communication satellite designated as CMS-01. This mission had been scheduled for December 7 this year, exactly a month after the successful launch of the PSLV C-49 that carried ISRO&rsquo;s all-weather Earth Observation Satellite along with nine other satellites belonging to other nations. However, on account of adverse weather conditions, the launch was postponed by ten days. The Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) C-50 in its XL configuration with six solid strap-on motors carrying the communication satellite, lifted off from the Second Launch Pad of Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) at Sriharikota. This was the 52nd flight of the PSLV, a highly successful workhorse designed and developed by ISRO and was the 77th launch vehicle mission from this location.

More Eyes in the Sky for IAF

Government sources state that as per a recent discussions on the Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&amp;C) Block 2 aircraft to be developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) under a Rs 10,500 crore project, the six aircraft would be acquired from the Air India fleet and modified to fly with a radar that will give 360-degree surveillance capability to the Indian Air Force (IAF). According to the government source, "The six AEW&amp;C block two planes would be highly capable, more than their predecessor NETRA planes, and provide 360-degree coverage deep inside the enemy territory during missions. The government is expected to clear the project soon."
