Bhopal: continuing legacy of a disaster

"Our eyes suddenly started to hurt, as if someone had rubbed chilies into them, and we could hardly breathe" recounts Surekha Lakkewar, one of the thousands affected by the gas leak that happened in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, on the evening of December 2, 1984. The Bhopal Gas Tragedy, as it eventually came to be known, is one of the world's worst industrial disasters. Tonnes of toxic gases had escaped from the Indian pesticide factory, Union Carbide. Thousands of people died and hundreds of thousands were injured. Almost four decades later, the affected families still cannot forget the fateful day and struggle with the aftermath. DW's Akanksha Saxena visits the remnants of the company and speaks to the affected families.
