Why do babies kick, wiggle and move right after birth? Study has the answer

Ever wondered why babies start wiggling, kicking and moving right after birth? Well, researchers have decoded this curious case.

According to a study done by the University of Tokyo, it was found that babies kick, wiggle and move right after birth because of the ability to control muscles, movement and coordination, which helps in the development of their sensorimotor system.

The research team recorded joint movements of 12 healthy newborns (less than ten days old) and ten younger infants (almost three months old) using motion capture technology. The analysis of the babies was done by technologies including infant-scale musculoskeletal computer models and computer algorithms, among others.

It was found that infants develop their own sensorimotor system based on explorational behaviour or curiosity.
