"Manhattanhenge" has been in the headlines for its beautiful and spectacular view of the sunset New Yorkers are crazy about.

On 30 May, thousands of people gathered on the streets of Manhattan to capture the beautiful snap of Manhattanhenge, which occurs only twice a year. Here's what you need to know about the phenomenon.

What is Manhattanhenge?

Manhattanhenge occurs in New York when the Earth is in the right position in relation to the sun and lines up perfectly with Manhattan skyscrapers and frames beautifully between the buildings. Similarly, the 'henge' phenomenon is also seen in other cities with huge skyscrapers such as Chicago, Toronto and Montreal.

When does Manhattanhenge occur?

This natural event takes place in May and July, for 2 days typically around the summer solstice marking the longest day of the year. According to the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, the next Manhattanhenge will occur again on 12 July at 20:20 (8:20 pm EST) and on 13 July at 20:21 (8:21 pm EST). So, if you missed it this time, no worries, you can witness it again in July.

Who coined the term "Manhattanhenge"?

A New York resident and famous astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson coined the term ‘Manhattanhenge’, inspired by the Stonehenge monument in the UK, where the sun aligns in between the stones in summer and winter solstices.

How to get Manhattanhenge's perfect view?

Over the years, it has gained popularity among social media users, photographers, tourists and astronomy enthusiasts. Today, it is celebrated as a major event in New York.
