Inequality, privilege not just human problems; animals are divided by it too

We are not alone in this, animals have privileges too! A study published in Behavioural Ecology found that privilege is not just a human thing, but also exists in the animal world.

A recent review published about the study showed that concepts of materialism, social circles and individual capabilities are also found in animal societies. Dr. Jennifer Smith, behavioural ecologist and author of this study said that just like humans pass on material possessions like jewellery, home, land etc. to the next generation, animals do the same.

In North America, female red squirrels pass on nuts and spruce cones to their daughters as inherited resources which increases their chances of surviving winters and reproduce earlier. Meanwhile, spotted hyenas inherit social rank from their mothers and chimpanzees inherit stone tools from their parents and also the ability to use them.

It was concluded in the research that the intergenerational transfer of wealth affects animals too.
