Women who started taking contraceptive pill as teens have 130% higher rate of depression: Study

Contraceptive pills are known to have severe side effects on women as per several studies. And, now a latest study published in Epidemiology and Psychiatric Sciences has found a link between oral contraceptive pills and depression.

It was found that teenagers who started taking birth control pills have a 130% higher rate of depression. Whereas, among adults, the depression rate was around 92%.

For the study, more than 2,64,000 women took part and it was noted that teenagers had a higher rate of depression because of contraceptive pills as they experience substantial hormonal changes.

Therese Johansson, of the Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala University in Sweden also talked about this study and said that there is a powerful influence of contraceptive pills on teenagers and that is interrelated to the hormonal changes that occur during puberty.
