Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT-I) is linked to a significantly reduced risk of depression in patients with insomnia, new research shows.

According to a study published in the JAMA Psychiatry, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT-I) may help prevent major depression among older adults with insomnia.

As per researchers, insomnia contributes to a two-fold greater risk for major depression in older adults. CBT-I is a first-line treatment that is being used as an alternative to sleeping pills and aims to introduce positive thoughts around sleep.

For the study, researchers examined 291 adults aged 60 years and older for a period of three years. During the research, participants received CBT-I for eight weeks with the help of professional trainers.

The findings suggested that CBT-I can reduce the likelihood of developing depression by over 50%.
